Younger people, or those with more exposure to Western cultures, might use the index finger more often for pointing. But in some cases, as when using chopsticks or in particularly emotional or dramatic moments, you'll see the middle finger used.

I generally try to watch an anime in english if i can, but if the dub is dire then i'll watch subs, not out of lazyness, more I find that some japanese voices for characters, especially the voices for the little girls can be rather grating. the Japanese voice for Mei from Tororo for example...
