  • and you too can wear your belt under your armpits..

  • funny comment hahha

  • That commercial is from 1952 at the earliest. It couldn't be from 1950 because the front numbers on the uniform were supposed to debut in the '51 Series (thanks Bobby Thomson) but had to wait until Opening Day in '52. Did you notice how skinny Zim was? Great commercial!

  • Pee Wee, you do uh...lotta work with boys...

  • @estafel That's what the Catholic priests say now!

  • @fobfan729 HELL YEAH..

  • Y did people break up words so much back then... For example he says com-for-table?

  • @fobfan729 in my country is 20$

  • @fobfan729 you know there has been inflation, dollar then was a lot more then now

  • who were the first bearded players in the majors after this commercial aired? i don't think there were any in the 50s and offhand i can't think of any from the 60s.

  • you can still get gillette for about that price...nothing really changed

  • I switched back recently to double edge razor too, it works perfectly, and a 5pack razor only costs $1.5, while a fusion 3pack costs $25 do the math, its much simpler to use, and shaves better, bye bye modern crap razors.

  • I have may dads old razor ,like the one shown, i just found blades in Walmart ,10 blades for 1.49. It works great.

  • @fobfan729 but 1.29 back then was worth alot

  • Is that the Don Zimmer? The one who Pedro fucked up?

  • @fobfan729 $1.29? I'd rather grow a beard!

  • Everyone in this video is dead

  • @D4R3W very interesting...

  • @D4R3W Incorrect. Don Zimmer is still kicking.

  • I hadn't shaved in awhile and had no self-respect, so I scraped my face per this commercial's suggestion and damned if it didn't fill me with self-respect! Encouraged by this I decided to shave my legs, but lost all self-respect in the process. Moral: Don't abuse the self-respect inducing powers of Gillette razors.

  • Don Zimmer once had hair!

  • @fobfan729 indeed but everything now it has higher price not only the specific product. Then at that decade u were getting low salary and u pay few money for products and now u get higher salary and u pay a lot of money...It is logic

  • @Robert2YTube If you price products from the 50's and compare them to products today, adjusted for inflation, you will find that things are far cheaper today than they were then. Automation and cheap imports did that.

  • @ardvarkkkkk Yes,that because the market is bigger, the competition is bigger.Don t forget that the salary at 50s was lower than today's salary.

  • @fobfan729

Actually it hasn't really changed, a 10-pack of double-edge blades costs between $5 and $6.

You will get the best shave from a DE safety razor or a straight razor, but it requires technique and Gillette (Procter and Gamble) have just made people lazier about these ordinary things in order to become richer.

Most people nowadays prefer to spend a fortune on disposable 5-blade razors and get a so-so shave rather than learning how to do it properly and get truly smooth skin.

  • He does a lot of work with boys, that is all.

  • @mmm4466 Ha! It looks like he's holding that bat in a suggestive manner!

  • The closest shave I've ever gotten was from a traditional double edge safety razor. The recent 5 blade, electronic, power button turbo glide monstrosities don't cut as smoothly as a single Derby razor, for example. Plus, the cartridge heads for these new razors are expensive.A pack of 25 Derby razors will run you about $6 and last you 7+ mos. depending on your shaving schedule. In many cases in life, simple is better. Keep it simple with shaving. Men, make the switch to a traditional wet shave.

  • @crissangel87 I agree. When I started shaving, the mufti bladed razors hadn't been invented yet. I started with a double edge. Since then, I have used about everything out there. 2 blade,3 blade, 4 blade, 5 blade. I even used a strait razor for a few years. Back to the double edge now. Best razor out there. The only advantage the multibladed razors have is it is difficult to cut yourself with one.

  • @fobfan729 i was thinking the same thing

  • Wow! The old school razors were so dangerous, thank god for modern technology. On the old razors, you had to hold the blade on an angle, not like todays where the blades are already built in at the proper angle. The old ones would actually shave the skin off your face if you didn't hold it at the right angle.

  • Damn, Don Zimmer looks young in this commercial. Is he even still alive? Forgot to notice the "B" for Brooklyn Dodgers, so used to seeing the "LA".

  • Omg $1.29! Now it's $10.00 for just the razor

  • Go Blue!

  • only one blade?? now theres 5

  • @solis2795 And four of them are redundant.

  • @fobfan729 you can get Wilkinson Sword blades like this, $15 for 10, they last forever, I have one of the old series razors since I bought up a bunch when an old variety store was closing & just buy Wilkinson refills, next cheapest thing to using a straight razor & almost as close, just have a good after shave handy

  • Oh, man, Al Helfer. I haven't heard him since he broadcast A's games in the late '60s.

  • I wouldn't even pay $1.29 for a single razor today!

  • Heeeey! When my poppy passed away I found a few of these in an old drawer! I was confused as it didn't have the blades in. Neat!

  • Love that shot of Don Zimmer with a full head of hair!!! Had to be around 1955 or 1956 because Zim went bald shortly afterward.

  • @elc1960 Zimmer didn't go bald,he started using this comfortable Gillette razor to give his head a clean smooth look it never had before. LOL

  • these old razors are the best, the hell with the new 5 blade razors that cost $20 for blades!

  • $1.29 is way too expensive in the 50's!

  • @DanManThePurple 1.29 in 1950 is about $12.00 today.

  • @fobfan729 ever hear of inflation?

  • Ah, back in the days when commercials actually explained what the fuck they were selling.

  • And once you're done drinking from your same color water fountain, light a Lucky Strike!

  • 'The ONLY way to get...

    a decent shave...

    is GILLETTE!'

  • and did you hear him ? i like base-balling boys.... WDF.. sounds sick..

  • i still use 1 blade.. now they tell us we need 5 bloody blades.. so i been shaving wrong for 30 bloody years.. i need counselling... help

  • Hahahahaa cool :)

  • oh thats how you use that razor, i found an old razor and had no idea what to do with it.

  • i found a 1950 gilette

  • pee wee you do a lot of work with boys- lol

  • only back at pee wees playhouse......wtf? lol

  • i was minus 7 then.. space dust.. thank you.. 5 *****

  • @fairhillnorrie Just an old fart, aren't you? :) :) I was negative ten.

  • poo

  • It must have been awesome living to have been in your tweenties at that time. I love nostalgic things. They kick ass.

  • The interviewer was Al Helfer who pulled off the amazing feat of announcing the Dodger games without knowing anything about baseball. He was supposed to replace Red Barber who left Brooklyn to announce Yankee games.

  • if i tried that my face woul be butchered piece of shit sensitive skin

  • @kantelier There are many people going back to the double edge safety razors. One of the reasons for that is it is easier on sensitive skin.

  • I think the best think that ever happend to razors was a pivoting head, that has helped shaving even more than those new 5 bladed vibrating razors =P

  • Oh yes a boy has so much more self-respect when he shaves those two peach fuzz hairs off of his face with an overpriced razor that needs to be replaced repeatedly...

  • @tgz1000 I wish Gillette would go back to making nice double edge safety razors like this, and for only 12 bucks :).

  • @tgz1000 Not with two peach fuzz hairs, one blade will last him until another 100 grow out, no that's value! Yay!

  • You do alot of work with boys?

Yeah, I love baseball and Kids...

<thinks of a michael jackson joke...about both these guys being dead... hmmm

  • I don't think I'd feel entirely comfortable using that downstairs :-/

Then again... it *IS* Gillette :D

    -L

  • In the 1950s, and for some decades before that too, having visible beard stubble was considered completely unacceptable. A man who looked that way was a bum who didn't have a job, or was some hick farmer, or was just crazy. Decent men might be allowed to appear unshaven if they'd been out on a hunting trip, or if they were in wartime combat. Otherwise - forget it.

  • What if you wanted top grow a beard?

  • That's why real men grow beards.

  • I am trying to grown Goaltee and Mustache.Did you notice that MACH 3

outperforms FUSION because the blades are thicker and closer together.

  • I can't offer my opinion becuase I use an old-fashioned safety razor, shave soap, and badger hair brush. However, I can tell you that if you are willing to practice that you will never go back to those plastic cartridge razors.

  • You took vacation and left town to do it.

  • Did you notice that in different countries, cultures and religions tend to grow beardsfrom at about 13?Alot had changed in 2009 especially in America.

  • Don Zimmer? Sure looks different than when Pedro Martinez and him were going at it.

  • Wow. That was only 58 years ago. And I'm sure they had a NICE clean shave after each use. Now we have battery powered shavers with 5 blades.... What next? Will our shavers tell us the time?

  • I went retro and bought an Merkel razor based on a 1905 design. Shaves better than the new multiblade deals, and for a lot less money.

  • Was Gillette formed in 1895?

  • Don't think so. I believe Gillette got his idea for disposable razor blades from the pop tops he saw during WWI, which was what about 1917? I could be wrong, but 1895 was around the time of the spanish/american war, so maybe.

  • @ushakov7 Yes

  • your gay !

  • GO SEE THE METS. Hey, Understand the COLD FACTS. There are no "Brooklyn Dodgers". The Brooklyn Dodgers don't exist. Keep that in mind. "Absorb that hard fact." Mr. Robert Moses "screwed" Brooklyn years ago. Too Bad. Brooklyn isn't a Major league Baseball town. "GET IT". Again, Go see "THE METS".

  • But, is it true that a boy "has more self respect when he's clean shaved??"

    Ah, the 50s..simpler time.

  • do anyonw know if you still can get blades for that kind ? i got one but never though of getting blades untill now

  • You can. They're called "double edge" razor blades, and any drugstore should have them.

  • Do you use one ? i was thinking that one blade should be easer on my sensitive skin the 2 or a 3 blade

  • I had one, but I thought it was harsher on my skin than a 2-blade. If you've got the razor, it'll only cost you a couple of dollars to try it.

  • Yeah maybe in the UK

  • Not work, Roy. I like baseball and kids.

Why aren't there men named Roy any more?

  • Hey did you all catch the young Zim? Good looking guy!

  • Disturbing! I got used to what he looks like now! LOL

  • hmm a razor or 25 white castle hamburgers. I will take the hamburgers.

  • that razor looks like it would killl u

  • lol " i like baseballing kids"

  • was the narrator Keith Jackson of ABC fame?

  • Can the interviewer pull his pants up any higher?

  • no he can't

  • I still use a razor like that for shaving. It was my dads first razor and it's SOOO much better than any plastic disposable crap that's out there now, it's amazing. Blades are harder and harder to find though. If you can find the old razors like they show here, it's worth the money!

  • I agree with you for a 100%! I use one of them old fashioned razors as well. Boy are they better than the crap they sell now! :D

  • 1.29 for the case razor and replacement tool...

  • How did people digitize these commercials if back then before the age of VHS it was very hard to record television? I'm guessing organized archives are all that can keep these old commercials?

  • lol a 1.29... back when things didnt cost an arm and a leg; I love it

  • I have this razor....it's pretty damn good too

  • The year on this is wrong.Zimmer didn't start playing for the Dodgers until 1954.Great posting though..

  • This is an awesome commercial!!. I love the Dodgers and gillette products, I only use gillette razors too!.

  • Grow up...

  • Gillette razors OWN the multi blade race. Shick who? Kick gravel all others the 5 blade rules!

  • Zimmer had hair! And the Dodgers were still without a championship in 1950.

  • This was before Zim was Beaned...now he looks like Popeye

  • Minus the huge popeye arms of course =]

  • check out Don Zimmer at :38. Wow, time certainly brings changes.

  • My father still uses that razor! Those things were built to last more than a lifetime!
