Lord Buckley was light years ahead of his time, and more than a half century after his passing, it is obvious that he is still very much ahead of the curve. He is greatly, greatly missed.
Compare this with his appearance on Groucho Marx's show and the stunning clip from "The Nazz.." It's so wonderful to see him so much earlier. (It's also an inspiration to lose weight--he looked worlds better when he was older.) And yes, someone mentioned the Reginald Van Gleason III connection. I think that character was concocted a couple or so years later, along with all the Gleason characters, on Dumont's Cavalcade of Stars, and it's Lord Buckley all over again.
Lord Buckley was an innovative, dynamic genius of language. His improvisational skills were beyond compare.A true talent. What passes for talent today is some simpleton ranting & raving on stage the same as if he were in a padded cell.
He was only out of place because there weren't no black people (allowed, in those times), but his idea was: You don't know shit about shit, and the people i love, you may hate, but you don't know nothin! ..and he did. and he did. Lord, he did. God bless Lord Buckley.
you wonder where he's going with the bit until he hits the payoff around 4:45 and it's a good 'un. i'd like to think that wasn't a cig he was puffing ON TELEVISION
Y'all might ingest Oliver Trager's humpin' bio on the Lord, "Dig Infinity!" Comes wit'a CD of the Lord's fine live workins' (Nazz, Black Cross, et al.) inter-be-twined wit' a radio interview of his Hi-ness by Studs Turkel. Make ready for the large charge. . .
Ahh, most sweet and lovely. But, can anyone tell me what was the last line?, right after "...if it wasn't for us beat-up sinners, you wouldn't have anything to do, would you? And the Lord said..." Couldn't quite make out what it was He said. Could you?
Man this is just toooooooooooooo priceless! Thanks so much for posting it - I never would have thought I'd see his Lordship in action like this - just amazing that this footage has been preserved. Hope there's more somewhere that will re-surface.
