Once I had my neice on the back for a trip into protected waters. She probably weighed 70# at the time. I cut a piece of 1/2" plywood to fit behind the seat and provide a flat surfce forher to sit on. It worked out well, but we were on flat water and it was only a 2 mile trip to do a little snorkeling. With that much added weight I couldn't bring too much other gear as the kayak is rated for 300-350# max.
We looked at the math tocharge a deep cycle battery using a solar panel and deemed the cost to purchase a panel large enough to be too high and it would have been too large to put on a kayak. It's a good idea but the technology isn't ready yet.
Cool! I'll be doing this to my kayak. I have a hobie mirage outback too. I was thinking of attaching a 2x4 on a milk crate for the mount like I saw on other people's design but your design is more durable and low profile. Thanks for a great idea.
Assuming a 105 amp battery and a minkota endura, at full speed (~4 miles per hour) the battery will last for approximately 3 hours. At the next lowest speed (~2.4 miles per hour), the battery will last for approximately 6 hours. When I'm going from one fishing location to another, I always travel at top speed, but when trolling I typically travel at approximately 1 mile per hour, and at that speed the battery should last for 20 or more hours.
A life jacket? Seriously? That's smaller than my pool man.

could you put a small solar charger on it and potentially charge while out fishing?

@9999fishman Its better than buying a boat, people use their kayaks for everything.

@mxman95
Your comparing a $1900 motor kit. To a $200+ set up for a merely 1+ mph more?
@YKMv8r
Say that when you need to paddle 5-10 miles to a hot fishing spot fast.
