“the political response to rising inequality – whether carefully planned or the path of least resistance – was to expand lending to households, especially low-income households....public policies, like tacit acceptance of the implicit public guarantee enjoyed by Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, encouraged people to bet big on housing and ultimately led to an unstable financial system." - Raghuram Rajan, former chief economist of the International Monetary Fund
''These two entities -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- are not facing any kind of financial crisis,'' said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee. ''The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.''
This video touches on most all of the highlights of who -and what- made Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae such a mess:
Liberal programs fostered by democrats to bend the rules for loan application approvals for applicants that didn't deserve it. Govenrment funds (dollars from working taxpayers) paid off the loans when they defaulted, and private investors made money on the loans all the way. The Liberal program got everyone feeding at the trough, ignoring their conscience. The gov't guarantees them!
Today the low life Nancy Pelosi wants to bail out states, it does not matter that you might have problems with what is going on in each state, she wants to bail out, say for example California, where all queers are having a ball and spreading aids so fast the doctor can hardly keep up, or Ma. where they have free health care (the state is now upside down) and you might not think it is your reponsibility to let gov. place the burden to insure someone else on your shoulders.
John Gibson, you say Dodd and Obama received donations from Fannie/Freddie, but so did McCain and several other republicans. In fact, you mention that the top 3 beneficiaries of fannie/freddie donations were democrats, but what you dishonestly neglected to mention is that the next 3 after them are republicans, let me give you the top 6 list:
obama's actual tim on the floor is less than 200 days and he's the number 2 recipient....mccain has been there for 20+ years and did not even make the top 25...
LOL. Talk about pseudo claims. The TRUTH: The Center for Responsive Politics tracks donations from employees of companies, NOT DIRECTORS, NOT LOBBYISTS. The contributions from Fannie and Freddie EMPLOYEES ONLY places Obama second. Blue and White collar workers. Obama-$126,349, McCain-$21,550. NY Times published a list looking at contributions from DIRECTORS, OFFICERS, and LOBBYISTS for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in 2008 which shows McCain-$169,000, Obama-$16,000. Totals BO-$142,349, JM-$190,500!
As someone who would REALLY Hate to see Obama get elected, I checked out this and you seem to be right. This is Employee donation. That is much different.
It is hard to interpret what it means to have employees of Fanny contributing that much money to a senator.
That said, McCain co-sponsored the FEDERAL HOUSING ENTERPRISE REGULATORY REFORM ACT OF 2005 to tighten up on FM/FM. So it would seem that he is nevertheless on the right side of the issue.
Average Joe employees vs Directors. Hmmmm. That was Chuck Hagel's brainchild Act. McCain only added his name in the last two weeks in May 25, 06. Johnny come lately. Democrats never even saw it as it never made it out of a Republican dominated committee. And McCain flopped on Hagel's regulatory act of 07. Hardly evidence of McCain as a major player with insight. Go look up who Chuck Hagel has been praising and lately. And who he has attacked. I wonder why.
Wait a minute on the spin. That comittee was republican dominated but the dems in committee shot it down. If just some dems voted yes, it would have made it to the floor.
Democrats: Paul S Sarbanes Md, Christopher Dodd Conn, Tim Johnson SD, Jack Reed RI, Chuck Schumer NY, Evan Bayh Ind, Thomas R Carper Del, Debbie Stabenow Mich, Robert Menendez NJ
Republicans: Richard Shelby Ala, Robert Bennett Utah, Wayne Allard Colo, Mike Enzi Wyo, Chuck Hagel Neb, Rick Santorum Pa, Jim Bunning Ky, Mike Crapo Idaho, John E Sununu NH, Elizabeth Dole NC Mel Martinez Fla
In fact, one should wonder why McCain flopped and no longer endorsed Chuck Hagel's regulatory ideas. Maybe one should wonder WHEN Directors and CEOs of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac started contributing heavily to the McCain campain.
He chose not to affiliate himself with further attempts by Hagel. If he was really in favor of the legislation why didn't he keep on supporting it? That is a flop for me. Be consistent once you make a stand. Some people might come around later. It's normal. But once you do, stay consistent.
Now that the collapse has occurred, the reform blocked by Senate Democrats in twelve times, is unforgivable.
We now know that many of the senators who protected Fannie and Freddie, including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Christopher Dodd, have received mind-boggling levels of financial support from them over the years.
So Obama and friends are criminals? So what? He will get elected and he will continue to support efforts to include people marginalized by a flawed economic system in the benefits of American economic progress. Not even the most sanguine supporters of the existing regime understand how they have been used to further obscure the fact that all land value is created 100% by the community and therefore belongs to the community rather than in the pockets of monopoly land owners. Criminals all.
Because Fox reported it they are not proven facts?! No wonder you still support obama...obamabots NEVER admit he is wrong about ANYTHING! Most cult followers feel the same way about their cult leader!!! Nobama!
Heil Obama liberal youth! Obama youth turn in your parents to the Obama police! Obama youth, be proud to be an evil whacked drugged out little liberal Eichmanns! Obama youth, we hate Christians! Obama youth, be proud youre not a bitter American that cling to their guns and religion! Obama youth, we socialist liberal fascists! If McCain wins, we will go over a cliff together like lemmings! Change? Yes we can! Seig Heil! Seig Heil!YES WE CAN!
The verdict is partially true, but misleading. Donations don't come from companies. A list of employee contributions puts Obama second, but a different list including lobbyists and directors shows McCain getting more.
Contributions from directors, officers, and lobbyists for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac for the 2008 campaign cycle shows McCain receiving $169,000, while Obama received only $16,000. That's the figures from the Federal Election Commission.
Better FoxNews than the empty-headed Pez-dispenser seance that IS the MSM echo chamber. The NEWS report was very clear. Obama was second in contributions from F&F. You can twist the numbers and change the categories all you want. It doesn't change that fact. Read any good DNC talking points lately?
I'm not going to twist the Federal Election Commissions numbers. And I READ independant news sources. See I get to read the enws before and new source get their hands on it to filter it. Nice try.
Nobody here is talking about FEC. We're talking about F&F. Stop shifting the focus. Newsflash: There are plenty of people in this country who are capable of reading and critical thinking. Surprise! So when you try to sweep this issue under the rug, and change the subject hoping nobody will notice, don't expect people to buy it.

Wrong! Who do you think the people from F&F were who contributed to B.O.?? The Directors, Officers, and Lobbyists! Nice try. The only person rubbing out anything here is YOU. Trying to rub out the truth ain't gonna work. Sorry, jasper.

Obama and his followers/political chums are such low-class, deceitful people.
They lie through their teeth saying they're for the middle class worker, when they are all in it for themselves. When Obama offers to give back some of the $110,000 or so that he got from Fannie and Freddie, then I'll think he's talking business and not just trying to get votes. You guys who believe him will find yourselves stabbed in the back by him one day (that is if he is ever able to become President).
Why am I not surprised that at the end of this Fannie Mae mess Barack Hussein Obama is there coming in 2nd place for most donations from this incompetent and corrupt organization that gave money to the Democrats.
LOL!! I knew there was more to Obama than meets the eye. You would never see this on PMSNBC! LOL!! I wonder what Obama has to say about this. Scum bag.
Obama is the biggest piece of shit ever to run for president. He chose the corrupt Chicago Democratic machine as the place to start his political career. That pretty much says all you need to know about him. But there is so much more. He would and should be behind by 40% in the polls, but a lot of weak minded people continue to be brainwashed by the so called "mainstream" media. Which, in reality, is a wing of the Democratic party. Wake up sheeple!
I greatly admire John McCain, a man of intelligence, honor and enormous personal and political courage. However, for him to choose Sara Palin to be his running mate is fundamentally irresponsible. He did not put the country first with this decision. Whether it is appropriate or not, considering Sen. McCain's age most people expected to have a vice presidential candidate who would be ready to step in at a moment's notice. The actuarial odds of that happening are significant, a one in five chance
McCain brought Fannie Maes $10.6 billion accounting scandal to the attention of Congress in 2005 and cosigned the Federal Housing Regulatory Reform Act of 2005..
the top 5 contributions, from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac PACs, to prevent housing reform..
and I wouldnt mind that they were republicans but they dont fucking admitt it. oh and to see hpw evil a man john gibson is look-up him talking about john stewart on his radio show, he is blatantly mocking and making fun of jon because jon was so upset about 9/11.
Fox news is a biased station, mostly all of their corespondents are conservatives. and the fair and balanced slogan they have is complete garbage. I mean look at the O'reilly/obama interview then look at the hannity/palen interview its complete bullshit.
And ABC and CSN are not at all biased for the democraps are they? Not. We the people need Fox news to tell us the truth about what Obama is really up to. We all know we will not hear it from ABC or the other liberal stations. I have stopped watching those channels because they are all liars who have their own agenda which is just demoncraps.
Everyone who's done research beyond what Rush has told them knows that this goes BEYOND Freddie & Fannie and hits deep into a FAILED NEO-CON PHILOSOPHY about trickled down economy. You can't spend 30 years dismantling unions, lowering wages for the average American, increasing gas prices, & telling them that can make up for those losses and increases in expenses w/ DEBT, be it credit cards or mortgages. And when the middle class got tapped out is when the WEALTHY who prey on them got desperate.
dear jonletter! the guy is just giving you the facts. Is it his fault? No. It's just the facts and real Americans want to know the facts, the truth unlike you demoncrats you want to turn a blind eye to the truth. typical.
Fox News is just reporting a fact.. do you have something against facts?
McCain brought Fannie Maes $10.6 billion accounting scandal to the attention of Congress in 2005 and cosigned the Federal Housing Regulatory Reform Act of 2005..
the top 5 contributions, from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac PACs, to prevent housing reform..
I'll change my vote from Obama to McCain if McCain would have the balls to stand up and speak this truth: "My fellow Americans, the Democrats are not responsible for the current financial crisis. Nor are the Republicans. Nor is Wall Street. No, my friends, YOU are responsible for this crisis and no one else. You are responsible for taking out loans you could not afford and spending money you didn't have. And you are responsible for electing politicians who pretended it could go on indefinitely"
I hear that but I'm not holding my breath for something that unpopular coming forth out of either side of this rat race, both flavors of baby ass kissing politicians are incapable of expressing that degree of honesty..
what a fool you are, jonletter. Granted, you will never see anything like this on the other news channels, but everyone knows they're in the tank for Nobama.
Fox propaganda strikes again. Why doesn't this creature of the far, far right mention that John McCain's campaign MANAGER is a former CEO of Fannie? Jerk!
Now that the collapse has occurred, the reform roadblock built by Senate Democrats in 2005 is unforgivable.
We now know that many of the senators who protected Fannie and Freddie, including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Christopher Dodd, have received mind-boggling levels of financial support from them over the years.

If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.
The current Democratic Party is filled with a bunch of elitists. They begrudge us lower middle class taxpayers the tax cuts Bush gave us, while stuffing their pockets with money from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
"The lobbying firm of John McCain's campaign manager was paid $15,000 a month for several years until last month by one of two housing companies taken over by the federal government, a person familiar with the financial arrangement said Tuesday night. " as reported by yahoo
Our economy right now is due to Democrats. They voted against a bill to regulate the risky investments that bombed Fannie May and Freddie Mac. This whole economic problem right now is to blame on Obama, Clinton, and all the other liberal senators that voted down this law.
Of course he still does, just as the Chicago-Obama also still exists, Obama isn't some aisle-junping saint.
The only reason McCain has a chance is because Dems and Independents with a memory beyond that of a fruit-fly know McCain and the more votes they give him, the more his moderate position is strengthened. Don't forget, the DNC could have nominated Marvin the Martian and still win easily, but instead went with the Most Liberal (not my words) Senator with too many radical & dirty ties.
John McCain foresaw the Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae disaster in 2006 — and tried against all Obama-Like minds to ward it off.
John McCain urged the passage of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005 (S.190(109th)), which he co-sponsored and which was rendered Dead in Congress. "If Congress doesn't act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that F. Mae and F. Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole"
"It's true that Obama selected Jim Johnson, the chaiman and CEO of Fannie Mae from 1991 to 1998, to advise him on his vice presidential choice. But Johnson resigned the unpaid position on June 11, 2008, months before veep nominee Joe Biden was chosen, amid criticism of compensation and favorable mortgage terms Johnson received."
Johnson was out of Fannie Mae by 1998 and had nothing to do with the sub-prime lending mess that Phil Gramms policies were a major architect of.
What on earth makes you think that ALL of Fannie Mae's problems materialized after 1998, and- before 1998- it was a spotless, squeaky-clean, ethically flawless, 100% corruption free company? Give me a break! That's sort of like saying the Italian mafia was squeaky-clean before Al Capone showed up, and it's all HIS fault it got dirty.
Google "political rule in Washington: Don't mess with Fannie Mae". You see the story from unbiased reporters about how deep the Fannie Mae racket was.
"Charlie Black and Rick Davis, two of Mr McCain's most senior advisers, were once lobbyists who fought to prevent regulation of Fannie Mae and its cousin, Freddie Mac. Eight McCain advisers and fundraisers are executives and lobbyists at AIG, the US insurance giant also bailed out by government. Mr McCain's economic guru Phil Gramm, and Mr Obama's advisers Robert Rubin and Lawrence Summers, all pushed through deregulation of the financial sector in 1999, a move blamed for today's problems. "
Maybe Fox should have a subtile on their screen, "McCain Campaign Central". Those contributions were from the employees of Fannie Mae...I can make contributions to political canidates from my employer too. The real story is where the money that was donated from the lobbyists of Fannie Mae: McCain took $160,000 and Obama $16,000.
This election is so pathetic. Those with a half a brain are sick with what is going on. You think the rest of the world is going to trust us after this election?
Obama is second in contributions from the employees of Fanny Mae. The executives and lobbyists of Fanny Mae gave over $169,000 to McCain, and $16,000 to Obama. So McCain is a bald-faced liar, once again.
You got that right! The demoncraps would not know the truth if it came up and bit their nose off. They are starting to believe their own pack of lies.
The Republicans are scraping the bottom of the barrel, hence all the smear campaigns. They hope that people that can't think very well, will go "oh that *sounds* reasonable, I like the confidence of that person making the case, so they must be right...".
Pure and utter propaganda, partisan carpet bombing, smears and lies. *That* is today's average Republicans.
And there's 50% of them - nice country, very smart.
Obama takes the second largest chunk of cash from these horribly run companies and keeps the feds out of their way. How can anyone, with even the slightest financial sense vote for Obama?
Right on, seen all this on FOX and yet osama obama lies and says McCain n Bush are the ones who did this all when it was the other democrat liar bill "I didn't have sex with that women" clinton and the do nothing congress that could have stoped Freddie Mac n Fannie Mae when McCain tried to stop them in 2005. The democrats were too busy filling their pockets ! This is more reason to vote all democrats out of office because they are all lying piece's of shit. Pro Patria doughboy
Fannie and Freddie are corrupt organizations kept alive by Democrats so that party hacks can collect patronage appointments that enrich their pocketbooks at the expense of taxpayers.
The list used by Fox News was based on data provided by the FEC which also breaks down the contributions Obama received from Freddie and Fannie. 120k of the 126k that Obama received was collected from individuals employed by Freddie and Fannie (excluding directors/officers). The rest is from PACs. I'm more concerned about who's receiving money from chairmans, officers and the board of directors, not secretaries, office managers and tech support.
The Federal Election Commissions shows how much each candidate received from the directors or officers. Based on that data, McCain received 169k compared to Obama's 16k. Out of that 169k, McCain received 70k from Geoffrey Boisi in 2007, a member of Freddie's board of directors. In the McCain campaign, Rick Davis, Charlie Black, Arthur Culvahouse Jr and Aquiles Suarez all connected to Freddie and Fannie. Like I said making connections is just bad politics for McCain.
My argument is that both mccain and obama are connected to Freddie and Fannie. You can say that its a joke if you want, but its true.
Mccain is making their connection to obama a large part of his speeches, but he's forgetting that at least 20 of his lobbyists took millions in lobbying fees from freddie and fannie. Its just bad politics.
The best person to vote for in this election is the guy who tried to do something about this 3 years ago - but the idiots in congress blocked it. Google FEDERAL HOUSING ENTERPRISE REGULATORY REFORM ACT of 2005.
There's a slight difference between being "connected" as you say, and Obama taking over $30,000 a year from them in contributions more than many Americans made last year. Your argument is a joke. Yes, indeed. Do some research people.
McCain said 2 yrs ago-I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S.190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole. I urge my colleagues to support swift action on this GSE reform legislation." Dems blocked.
lol this could kill the democratic campaign, i doubt that they will be able to effectively convey that mccains is even more involved with the whole crisis, well congratulations to your new nazi state, look forward to some active holidays in pakistan or iran ^^
the system is bullet proof: the sheeple will never consider that maybe both parties are corrupt but just be happy that they are allowed to vote in favor of their base drives and stereotypes XD
Franklin Raines, Clinton's budget director who made $50 million as Fannie Mae director, has a new job. The man he works for speaks harshly of the Freddie & Fannie executives who brought on the crisis with fast-dealing slickery around the weak financial rules. The man in question has Raines as one of two top campaign financial advisors. You'll never guess who "de man" is.
not just that but to say that NEARLY every news media outlet is trying to get Barack Obama elected apart from Fox which 'obviously' reports the unbiased truth is preposterous. It tells you something quite rationally obvious.
No! These guys lie as much as McPain! What happened is that Phil Gram, with support from McPain, made it possible for Fannie May to be able to take on subprime mortgages. This is what led to the failure! FOX is such a bunch of liars!
no ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, and the liberal press who are trying to get Barack elected lie.. This is true stuff do your research and if you are honest you might get it!lol
Are you really interested in what i researched..? Are you just doubting i researched anything.Look at your Obama Voting record in the senate..It'll tell you why..And then look at his contributers..1+1=? lol
Even if the legislation you're referring to created the crisis (which actually isn't the case), you're wrong. Barney Franks (current head of the Senate Banking Committee, MIA Joe Biden, Kerry and Dodd all voted for it, McCain did not. The vote 90-8.
McCain's campaign also has a few more direct connections with the companies. For example, the Times notes that McCain's campaign manager, Rick Davis, was also previously "head of the Homeownership Alliance, a coalition of banks and housing industry interests led by Fannie and Freddie to stave off regulations."
In the current election cycle, Sen. McCain has received $169,000 from the mortgage companies and their affiliates. Two of the top contributors -- Freddie Mac's board member Geoffrey T. Boisi and Fannie Mae lobbyist Richard F. Hohlt -- are listed on McCain's Web site as bundlers who've raised between $100,000-$250,000 for McCain. (A sidebar in the Times lists McCain's top donors connected to the mortgage companies.)
Sen. Obama is the second highest recipient of political money from Fannie and Freddie. Not to mention his advisers Jim Johnson and Franklin Raines who worked for these corrupt entities. Oh I guess they never saw this corruption going on, like Obama never heard his priest saying GD America.
McCain is actually one record proposing legislation to reform these corrupt GSEs, but Barney Frank and the Democrats killed that.
Wheres all the obama supporters trying to defend their guy ??? OHHH i know...any news they cant tie to racism or misrepresentation they just IGNORE! Good try Obamaites.
Bush and McCain warned the us about this years ago, but the dems where recieving money to keep it hush hush, but as for Obama..Fannie and Freddie where banking on him wining the election.. He has been runnig for four years, and it so happens that is the time period he recieved all that money..So much for reform and change. So much for special interest. Looks like Obama has been lining his pockets. Ask Sarah if she has dont that..The answer is no! McCain Palin 08
I cannot believe that more American's don't know about this. I especially can't believe that this only just now coming to the surface. This needs to flood the internet...particularly the people in the states that are in the "yellow"...undecided. Some of the people closest to Barack are part of the reason we are currently in this economic crisis?!! Barack Obama...What a hypocrite!
What do we do to get more people to see this. They actually reported it here before McCain mentioned it in his speech in Vienna, OH this afternoon.
I doubt this will be mentioned on CNN, MSNBC, NBC, ABC, or in a AP news article as I have been looking for it all day. Here that phone ringing at 3:00 a.m. - It's your wake up call. Don't elect another corrupt pay-to-play politician to the highest office in the land. Just say NO to OBAMA. Vote yes to McCain/Palin to bring reform to Washington.
Who gets the most from them?

He will get elected and he will continue to support efforts to include people marginalized by a flawed economic system in the benefits of American economic progress. Not even the most sanguine supporters of the existing regime understand how they have been used to further obscure the fact that all land value is created 100% by the community and therefore belongs to the community rather than in the pockets of monopoly land owners. Criminals all.

Contributions from directors, officers, and lobbyists for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac for the 2008 campaign cycle shows McCain receiving $169,000, while Obama received only $16,000. That's the figures from the Federal Election Commission.

DiggityDogg56 3 years ago
What on earth makes you think that ALL of Fannie Mae's problems materialized after 1998, and- before 1998- it was a spotless, squeaky-clean, ethically flawless, 100% corruption free company? Give me a break! That's sort of like saying the Italian mafia was squeaky-clean before Al Capone showed up, and it's all HIS fault it got dirty.

Maybe Fox should have a subtile on their screen, "McCain Campaign Central". brywen27 3 years ago 2
The list used by Fox News was based on data provided by the FEC which also breaks down the contributions Obama received from Freddie and Fannie. 120k of the 126k that Obama received was collected from individuals employed by Freddie and Fannie (excluding directors/officers). The rest is from PACs. I'm more concerned about who's receiving money from chairmans, officers and the board of directors, not secretaries, office managers and tech support.
bigkgs 3 years ago
The Federal Election Commissions shows how much each candidate received from the directors or officers. Based on that data, McCain received 169k compared to Obama's 16k. Out of that 169k, McCain received 70k from Geoffrey Boisi in 2007, a member of Freddie's board of directors. In the McCain campaign, Rick Davis, Charlie Black, Arthur Culvahouse Jr and Aquiles Suarez all connected to Freddie and Fannie. Like I said making connections is just bad politics for McCain.

McCain's campaign also has a few more direct connections with the companies. For example, the Times notes that McCain's campaign manager, Rick Davis, was also previously "head of the Homeownership Alliance, a coalition of banks and housing industry interests led by Fannie and Freddie to stave off regulations."
zumi23 3 years ago
