@lamby0000 Visibility was 40 miles plus at the altitude TE901 was at, as demonstrated by the photos and cine film recovered from the mountainside. What the crew encountered was not cloud or fog but whiteout, which gave the impression of a vast white expanse stretching into the distance. NZALPA have uploaded Captain Vette's "Impact Erebus" documentary to YouTube, and it's well worth a watch.
@Stangelycoloured Not really, he was generally known as being scrupulously honest, and a military pilot of the old-school. However this meant he wasn't prepared for Air New Zealand leading him around by the nose and destroying all documentation that might have altered his conclusions from the ones they wanted him to come to. He died still believing that TE901 was in cloud when it crashed, which goes against the evidence unearthed by Capt. Vette and Justice Mahon.
