A bandsaw is also ten times the price and takes up extra space in your workshop. Plus its an extra thing to maintain and oil. I just picked up one of these slitting saws for my Taig lathe and I can't wait to see how much hacksawing it saves me.
just a question, you obviously use a lot of raw metals, so I assume that you dont just find it all lying arouns- how much do the metals generally cost?
Good question. Brass is getting very expensive especially with shipping. Aluminum is a good bargain and steel is cheap but heavy and therefore expensive to ship. Leaded steel is a pleasure to machine but it costs a bit more.
I like it

You should put a guard on this which runs the entire horizontal length of the lathe.

good idea, but i'm worried about that chuck coming around... a guard might, er should be placed over the chuck to you don't wrap your hand around it.

Question: how many times have you burnt your finger cutting small pcs of metal?

good idea -- just dont like the idea of my fingers being that close to a spining blade

Great idea! Folks I never buy my metals new, go to the scrap metal recycle centres. You can buy bits of metal at a fraction of the cost of brand new.
