@hernandezrivas Unfortunately, this one probably wasn't. The US built theirs under license in the US, and they've made a lot of revisions to them to boot.
That said, we made a lot of revisions to ours as well; just a shame they're being retired. I still can't see how the F-35 is supposed to match this tough old bird in CAS duties...
I noticed the US Navy doesn't use ski jumps like the RN did with their Invincibles. Wouldn't that save fuel during loaded take offs from the Marine flattops?
@Planetar17 Probably would for the Harrier, but only the Harrier. The other birds they use are all toughened for catapult launches - adding a ramp would kill that capability, and stop most of their fast air from being able to get off the deck.
it's is genius, think about how much runway space you can save if commercial aircrafts would use the same to take off, or how much a aircraft carrier can carry
OMG that was super cool. Our technology is incredible. We have many other toys that are bad ass as well. That is why we are the worlds most powerful force.
@mbiokoeb actually!! funnily enough a couple of engineers ( i guess ) actually have made a jetpack type thing! my mate showed me it in college yesterday ha, genuis.. let alone the inventor of the harrier :P
David Cameron's Defense policy, a seat for himself, his family and other Conservative and Lib Dem big wigs and their families on a requisitioned British Airways Boeing 777 departing London Heathrow destination Bermuda, before the first Iranian ten kiloton yield range nuke detonates over London. Put the Nimrod MRA4 in to service, keep the Harrier GR9 in service and kick Cameron out of 10 Downing Street.
@Roflmao551 yes i inserted that in there because i was feeling stupid at the time but i tried to pawn it off on you but you of course caught me and im going to insert the FAIL MARK HERE and there and now right into my ass. hey i just came, thanks alot. add me
@hobosapiensapien2 that would be a british guy ;) best part was the uk govt turned him down cus they thought the harrier design was stupid, hence america built the 1st ones then sold em back to the uk, which we then redesigned and sold back =D...
@pred99 What Tosh mate. We built them in the 1960s, flew them then US marines got interested. US had a big part in improving them - (think you added some go faster spoilers - or fancy stripes), but in no way can you say you were responsible for them. *** Built the first ones - "have a word with yourself". We did buy the improvements though - well - even perfection can be improved.
so if you were gonna do something like this in the Marines would they assign you to a sqad of planes and you go wherever the planes go?And I mean like work on them
This is the classic British bodge. The UK government would not put any money into it early on ( they had come to the conclusions missiles were the way forward ), so it was privately funded. It pushed the limits of the engine to the point were they had to have a big weight reduction of components to be able to get it to fly. And it crashed on display at the Paris airshow when a valve jammed. The Harrier is the classic British bodge, amazing 'cos it got to fly at all !

The JSF, or F-35 will have two modes of flight. The US Navy has the F-35A which will be conventional takeoff and landing. The US Marines will get the F35B, which will be VSTOL, or vertical takeoff and landing. The Navy model has already begun to roll off the production line, and the Marines should be getting ours around 2012.
The current F-35 rolling off the production lines (F-35A) is the Air Force variant. There is currently no working Navy prototype (F-35C), though one is planned. The USMC F-35B has been delayed for approximately one year due to engine trouble.
Aren't they supposed to make a version of the new YSF joint strike fighter like this with vertical take-off. Saw a video of it a while back.
Awesome ability to take off from a stationary position like that. Many advantage, don't know why the military doesn't pursue this more. I mean, this plane was introduced in 1969 Since then, no other.
Save yourself some time. It lifts off at 0:23

well it isn't very hard to get it floating when you got it to take off vertically... it's just a bit less power so it won't go up.
