I love this song but not this version. It’s very sloppy and they mowed right over the groove. The lineup with Neil Murray and Ian Paice was much tighter on this song and had a much better groove.
sorry bout this...i love WS but if u look closley at 1.57,the words "all along"...this has been tampered with in the studio afterwards.not a truely live performance.shame.
@lordflanderwell Its a shame you think that the version was tampered. No way man, just listen to the drumming, DC etc. It is a genuine rough live recording. Thats whats soo good about it!
''my momma said : ''you're crazy, she said : ''what you're gonna do ?''.I left with my bluesharp an' said : ''I leave it up to you''. Gonna live the life I love, gonna live the life I choose, you gotta understand : I'm walking in the shadow of the blues.''
damn this is cool. I didnt read the text so as soon as it started I knew I saw moody (the hat) but then i saw Cozy and I was like WHOA must be from right before the american version of slide it in came out. Sure enough. Dang this is so cool.
every one loses when he gets old.. we owe david more than just listen to his old records... even if (!) he was worse I´d support him, for the glory he gave to my youth once !
O so great to hear this tune again get me some more with Mickey Moody like take me with you on 12 string greatest show i ever saw and still the greatest show on earth
I agree, blues are played nice & slow. Like sex, slow & easy. Some people just don't get it. I feel, it's a shame cause it's just like the new lineup, to hard & fast. Some women like it "slow & easy", get boys. It's like premature ejacu....
The "Live In the Heart of the City" Whitesnake line-up is the definitive one. LEGENDS
Good luck to Coverdale if he's still out there doing it, but he's already proved you can get players like Steve Vai amongst others and still come nowhere close to the line-up above.
@IQriousIRoq I agree completely. For me Whitesnake will always be David Coverdale, Bernie Marsden, Micky Moody, Neil Murray, Jon Lord and Ian Paice. A MONSTER band.
Not a great version - far too fast, and Cozy's style is clumsy compared to Ian Paice's easy swing. They were at their best in 1980 - in my humble opinion:-)
Going watching them in June! The current Whitesnake lineup is the best since the Ready and Willing days, I agree - but I still prefer the old band - personal taste, as I'm not a big fan of heavy metal. I prefer my rock to swing!!!!
Amazing, innit? Here he's about 32, in fighting trim, and he can't stay in key to save his life. That's certainly the Coverdale I remember seeing, a strutting peacock who had enormous difficulty singing the songs straight, tarting them up with ridiculous whoops and gestures.
Yet miraculously, when I see one of his recent live dvds 20 years later, somehow he now remains perfectly in key, clearly enunciating every word.....gee, technology's a wunnerful thing, doncha think?
and you sickdrjoe , your comment isnt worth reading, you dont have the slightest idea about singing, i wish i can meet you sometime and hurt you, people like you make me sick.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It's nice that you want to hurt me to avenge your feelings, Fan Boy, but if you want to believe in 55-year-old singers with wider range and more endurance than 30-year-olds....you go right ahead, Fan Boy.
i am a fan boy indeed, just got back from a concert by david, still has the great voice and a wide range, like he always had.
and to all the idiots who thinks that the dvd was overdubbed or whatever, i was on the second raw on that hammersmith concert, no overdubbing was needed, because they sounded like gods.
Great show...Micky Moody, the magnificent Cozy Powell on the drums, David Coverdale, Bernie Marsden and Jon Lord....is that Bob Daisley plaing the bass?? Great song from the Lovehunter album. Thank you for posting this gem! Miss those days...:-))
Looks like half the early lineup is gone - I guess this is when Coverdale started switchin' band members a lot!
I worked this out on guitar and realized it's the "Smoke On The Water" chord sequence with a different rhythm! Guess David was nostalgiac for his purple days.
"Here's a song for yahhhh",,,, It was his 'catchphrase' said in a sort of phoney Cockney twang.... If you get their early live recordings it's clearer; Hell, I love this song, but this version's a bit too pacey for my liking. Great to see their early stuff up here tho. Nice One :-)
and it was a long time ago. David doesn't look or sound like this anymore and I don't think Cozy or Mickey are around either. I haven't kept up with 'Snake the last few years, so please inform me if I'm wrong.
Way back... David was so great... Mistreated is awesome!
Tommy Aldridge joined in 1987 but did not play on the self titled album. He joined for the tour as did Viv Campbell, Vandenberg and Sarzo. Not one of them on the album.
I love the blues, They tell my story, If you don't feel it you can never understand. So many times I thought about it And now I know just what it means to be a man. Everyday I realize you can see it in my eyes I never wait, or hesitate. 'Cos I love the life I live, I'm gonna live the life I choose, You gotta understand I'm walking in the shadow of the blues.
Nope, Tommy joined WS in '87 - that's why he is in the 'Still of the Night' video for example. Coverdale fired the whole line-up that recorded '1987'(Sykes/Murray/Dunbar) and got Vandenberg, Campbell, Sarzo and Aldridge for the videos and tour.
The problem is that Cozy Powell was completely the wrong drummer for this version of Whitesnake who were still very much blues rooted at the time. Cozy doesn't swing like Ian Paice, for ex., and he simply bashes through the tunes and plays too fast (there are other examples of this on YT). Cozy never was a feel but a power drummer. That approach worked with Rainbow and Sabbath but not Whitesnake.
well... towards the end they got kinda sterile, but the early stuff, like this one, with moody/marsden were outstanding. i personally thought it was sad what they became towards the end, but i guess thats just my opinion cause they sold a whole boatload of albums later
Yeah, I was there too. Great day - Dio, Twisted Sister etc, Whitesnake were BRILLIANT Cozy's drum solo had helicopters swooping over the crowd....really good gig! they did an awesome version of Mistreated with a bit of Soldier Of Fortune thrown in...wonderful!
are you sure it was cozy... cause as i recall by the time they were headlining, at least here in the states, cozy had been replaced by tommy aldredge(formerly of black oak arkansas)
This is great in its own way (kinda in preparation for later metal years) but Cozy Powell murders it. Cozy was a great drummer, but old-style 'snake should swing as well as hit hard. Ian Paice was the man. As well as Marsden, Galley is just not in the same league.
Awesome post, just got a bootleg DVD of the entire set, was there that day, Wow! Whitesnake, Meat Loaf, ZZ Top, Dio, Twisted Sister!!! Remember DC telling the crowd that it would be the last time they performed 'Mistreated'! I still had hair too!
I remember having this concert on VHS way back. This version of the track is a bit quick for my taste, though. Hodgkinson is a superb bass player, far better than Murray, although the earlier line-up with Murray & Marsden was undoubtedly the best version of Whitesnake. After this, we had the ridiculous posturing and slick production of the American Whitesnake...
I agree. In fact old DC's hair is already getting out of control in this performance, in preparation for the US glam/hair days :-( The pace is far too quick for the song to have its full effect.
I just love David's hair on this concert!
