Ralf Little had schedulling conflicts, so couldn't return, and the writier couldn't think of any way Johnny would actually be away from his family willingly for so long... so the only way he would be would be if he died.

Throughtout the whole of the series i was expecting him to wake up at the of the last episode in the series... he never did :'(
