gosh! i think i heard this song when i was 10 or so and then now...its so dark, sounds very like Monster...this performance is amazing, michael looks so neurotic i love it
It always makes me chuckle when people go on about the good old uncommercialised stuff to be the best. Like you are rebelling against the masses. I can't see it myself. There's good and a tiny bit bad in all there stuff. I absolutely adore the mish mash of dead letter office, and absolutely hate the dirge of Moral kiosk. Think Good Advices, Wendel Gee and Falls to Climb are legendary but Daysleeper is garbage. I think the best two albums are Fables and New Adventures.
In response to the post-Bill Berry smear campaign. Yeah, they went a little post modern for a while, but Up was pretty solid overall. Reveal is half excellent and half okay, Around The Sun, okay they don't even like that CD. However, Accelerate and Collapse Into Now are both excellent CDs and were great ones to end their career on.
It is a bittersweet moment as I think about the things in life that have made the most profound impact in our voyage. As we say goodbye to R.E.M., I am forever grateful for the space that they could only fill in my soul. Sometimes I have thought about my life as Pre- and Post- R.E.M. Michael, Peter, Mikey and Bill, I too was nervous when the lights were bright.
This was a fantastic concert tour and probably the final time i really enjoyed REM. The rest of their Warner stuff was too commercial. It always sort of felt like they sold out.
@Ian2belle They ran out of inspiration.Happens to the best of them:( But what a catalogue they have!Have to be grateful for all those brilliant songs and albums they have released.See them live! They are really good:)
@Ian2belle Actually, they went to shit long before that. They were stunningly innovative and the best band in the country during my college years then they got lazy or wanted to cash in or both and garbage like "Shiny Happy People" and "Stand" came along and were followed by nothing but commercial sell-out drivel. What a shame for they were so great and I still put "Life's Rich Pageant" up against any album ever made.
@RIMOOREZ Not to be a Nazi, but we spell it 'seizure' in my parts :P He appears to be having a seizure because he is Michael Stipe. It's his thing, kind of like how KISS band members wear makeup and wear ridiculous outfits, or how Jimmy Page has hair down to his knees. It's how he rolls; the freakish, mentally addled, abrupt head movement kind of rolling. Its just who he is.
Saw them in Melbourne, Australia a few years back (think it was 2005 or 2006, to lazy to check dates), they launched into Turn you Inside Out halfway thru and i was standing up screaming my lungs out.. That coupled with getting in backstage at Rod Laver arena's and heading on to Cherry bar, drinking/partying with the guys til 8-9 in the morning probably one of best (concert) memories of my life this far :)
@fiddles900 havent played it in a while, but i remember it being a standard EADGBe tuning.. The way ive played it is intro as a B variant (xx4402). Main part chord progression is B (x2440x) - A (x0220x) - D (xx023x).. "chorus" would just be an E (powerchord at 0799xx or regular 02210xx). Theres a raise as well, at some point, to F# iirc...
This is just how i play it, peter buck probably does it differently :)
I LOVE THIS BAND and this is a great tune. However, Michael Stipe had a definite Robert Downey jr. phase / crush going on here. C'mon he looks just like him.
@roopdaug His comment refers to Exxon, the worlds largest oil company.
Though Stipe's lyrics are rather vague, as in most of his works, the album which included this song was filled with political criticism towards big government and big corporations. This is the most likely reason he would start this song with a dedication to Exxon Oil.
Same with me, but it had something to do with the girl in the video that I previously viewed, relative to this song title. I could turn her inside out...and I'm not sorry about that comment. She's pretty hot. Back on the topic of this specific video, I agree. Exxon and other oil companies have screwed others for far too long. At this stage, oil should be used primarily for lubricant.
One of four best concert "rockumentaries" ever in my opinion, along with "Rust Never Sleeps", "The Last Waltz" and "Van Morrison Live at Montreux 1980/1974".
gosh! i think i heard this song when i was 10 or so and then now...its so dark, sounds very like Monster...this performance is amazing, michael looks so neurotic i love it

What key i this song in?
fiddles900 10 months ago
@fiddles900 havent played it in a while, but i remember it being a standard EADGBe tuning.. The way ive played it is intro as a B variant (xx4402). Main part chord progression is B (x2440x) - A (x0220x) - D (xx023x).. "chorus" would just be an E (powerchord at 0799xx or regular 02210xx). Theres a raise as well, at some point, to F# iirc...
This is just how i play it, peter buck probably does it differently :)
