  • Nice

  • "10% more Indian sounding"

  • This is E mixolydian, just to specify for anyone who wants to improvise.

  • "Hi, Jesus here.."

  • why do his guitars always look like theyre made so cheaply?

  • this guy has a deep voice first time hearing him talk

  • his position shifting is INSANELY solid haha

  • Anyone else notice that he is using a penny for a pick?

  • @thefretboardmagician definantly just a red pick.......

  • @wagatabuchunga1 Nah, whatever he's got in his hand is metallic. If you watch you can catch light glinting from it.

  • @EpicDJTime pause around 0:43 or 0:44 Just a good old shiny red pick, may take couple tries to get the video paused at the right time

  • @wagatabuchunga1 @EpicDJTime

He plays Red Bear picks. (it was in one of his licklibrary videos)

  • @MrJuliorMedina w00t its settled then. not a penny

  • @thefretboardmagician Fancy seeing you here ;)

  • @IsaacDeanMusic Haha, Hey there ;)

  • Man that sounds cool. The master.

  • ALL HAIL JESUS

  • sounds like John McLaughlin's indian stuff.

  • Not gonna lie, I shat a brick when I saw this

  • Best Ever guitar world lesson

  • anyone else think he looks like Gowron from Star Trek?

  • @satansskidmarks Holy shit, you're right!

  • @satansskidmarks he was exiled from the Klingons for being too skiiny :P

  • "charlie bit meh...and it hurts"

  • It sounds like Mario Bros 64... I don't know why :D haha. Nice lick!

  • @WencesWasHere

    I hear ya!

    Shifting Sands! :)

  • @shredx81 That's right! Awesome, thanks.

  • @WencesWasHere

    watch?v=T6Rb7XrxHWM

    :)

  • @shredx81 Haha! Thanks man, I'm actually playing Mario again.

  • anybody else groan every time they see a chuck norris joke nowadays?

  • @PGROSYE02 chuck norris can play this with only his eyeball..

  • @rgt4all Hi, you must be from 2009....

  • @fraud1980 read the comment i replied to jackass

  • @PGROSYE02 No.

  • @decembersdownfall Awesome, thanks man :)

  • God he's awkward.

  • steve vai would like that lick.

  • @mojoefly i think he

  • Hah this was a bitch to get up to speed!

    Good one Guthrie

  • hey, here are not discussions about asians.

  • Kenny Wayne Shepard , Guthrie Govan , Tomo Fujita , John Petrucci , seems like guitar world magazine has all the top guitar instructors these days

    God Bless America

  • @JohnTouchstoneTV

Why did you include "God Bless America"?...

  • Is it me, or does Guthrie actually play this lick slowed down? As in the video isn't just played back slowed down.

  • @Dreadythedread On these type of videos the guitarists pretty much always actually play the lick slowed down, i dont think i've ever seen them slow the video down as the slower example...

  • @winchy32 if you check out the kenny wayne shepherd video, you can clearly see it is slowed down

  • @rodrigorivero25 Oh yeah, fair enough, maybe its a standard thing with these guitarworld vids, i've neevr seen them before

  • guitarjob.

  • bit beatles-ish

  • @chrisxcore19 Cause you know the sitar from Beatles? :)

  • Guitar World Magazine !

    God Bless America

    John

  • Jan Hammer.

  • hes using red bear picks $25-35 each!

  • @Tonesnob72 $25-35??? well, It might be very difficult to kill those bears.

  • I think the one thing he forgot to mention was to keep your thumb stationary until the end, it helps for me

  • "for that 10% more indian sounding.."lol

  • Heavy Red Bear Big Jazzer is his pick.

  • Reminicent of Jan Hammer's keyboard licks from Jeff Beck's "There and Back" album...

  • @bbagginz - Beck is one of his biggest influences, whether he'll admit it or not. You can hear "Guitar Shop" in almost everything melodic he does.

  • This lick works fucking perfectly on Vai's "Answers". Coincidence?

  • @pear500 i noticed that it was incredibly similar to that song!

  • surely, ther's not enough hours in a lifetime to get as good as guthrie govan

  • i think that Guthrie Govan and Buckhethead are the same people

  • @hatedollar Don't get me wrong, buckethead is good. But guthrie is lightyears ahead of him in every aspect

  • This is really something you need to work on a couple of days.Great scale.

  • It would sound better with some of eric johnson's "koto" bends thrown in there, but still great.

  • @DistortedV12 You're an idiot. He's throwing a singular concept out there, it's up to YOU to take those two ideas and create something new with them.

  • @jspartacus Don't take it the wrong way, it was just a suggestion. I don't mind if you click that thumbs down button to the right of my comment.

  • That was worth the time !

Enjoyed the Lick of the Day

  • Lick Of The Day

  • Now this is what I call an impressive guitar lick guitar lesson from Guthrie Govan , so I can get this one on my ipad ?

  • ... I licked my fingers so they could slide this fast :D

  • if we close the eyes we totaly hear a real SITAR!!! you're God Gutherie Govan ;)

  • great!

  • was he wacking off?

  • ooo this guy uses a penny for a pick...... same here :)

  • @danjio666 That is a pick made of metal. He has a video explaining why do he use that kind of picks

  • sort of a shakti's lick :D

  • Guthrie's precision reveals that he is a shred-obsesssed, note-sweeping, cold robot. But i can not explain the fact that he does one of the most meaningful music i have ever heard.A personality fit for the singularity.

  • You play too much on that frettless Vigier Guthrie.:)

  • Check out my guitar playing and other vids on my channel and plz comment and give me ur opinion and don't forget to thumbs up and subscribe if u like it

  • Is he using a penny as a pick? Looks awful shiny :)

  • @STWhiting Yep :D. Brain mays of queen uses a ten pence as a pick :D

  • @STWhiting No...It's not a penny. The pick is made out of Kryptonite. Without the Kryptonite pick he would play so fast that the cameraman would explode ( along with the camera....And that's good because if he didnt fuck the camera up you and I would be dead to ).

  • @STWhiting

Nah not a penny, he plays Red Bear picks, expensive, but apparently worth it, they are supposed to emulate tortoiseshell. =]

  • @STWhiting He's using Red Bear picks. Check 'em out

  • @STWhiting He uses the Red Bear big jazzer picks =P

  • @STWhiting its a 2pence coin. before i even became aware of this dude i preferred to use coins instead of plectrums or picks. dunno why. lol. brian may in queen uses an old british currency, a shilling i think. or a farthing! lol

  • @lstarbuck20 brian may uses a sixpence.=)

  • @lstarbuck20 Look at 0:55 - it really looks like a pick.... How do you think it's a coin?

  • @STWhiting It's gold. ;)

  • @STWhiting i'm not sure, but i think he uses metal pick. i use metal ( aluminum ) picks, they are great. :)

  • @akobudebice it's not metal he is using a Redbear pick search them on google

  • So damn fast

  • hes a lil creepy lookin but damn he can play!

  • Chuck norris cant play this, HE CANT BITCHES

  • @CamoteMaster You will be killed by chuck norris in a few seconds.

  • @LeoVendettaGuitar i dont give a fuck

  • @LeoVendettaGuitar No. Just Chuck Testa.

  • Betcha can't play this..

  • Hi I wish you success

  • 4 people could not handle sliding a major 3rd on one string

  • This guy makes me want to learn Music Theory.

  • i dont see this guy everywhere so he must be underrated.

  • how can anyone not like him?

  • I want that guitar.

  • hes totally using a penny... like a boss.

  • Why is it called a lick, anyway?

  • Jesus!!.. Oh sorry Guthrie, sometimes I forget that's you...

  • Dominant pentatonic, WTF? Excellent vid anyhow!

  • @Sulcuscentralis thats the dom. pentatonic hes talking about. the typical minor pentatonic but instead of playing the minor 3rd, hes playing a major 3rd.

  • If I do not get to see him playing in one week in Chicago I'm cutting off my penis.

  • yea he doesnt beat off ;)~

  • really cool lick guthrie cheers dude!

  • lo siento por los ateos pero el mejor guitarrista del mundo se parece a jesucristo

  • Awesome as ever.

And those are probably the most photogenic frets I've ever seen on a guitar.

  • How did he even GET those vertical scratches on the finish?

  • Interesting.

  • Guthrie Govan is so insightful

  • check out motherjane --fields of sound if anyone really likes these sorta licks..

  • awesome :D \\m//

  • personally,i prefer guthrie govan's videos to any other from guitarworld.he really explains everything very well and his licks sound so fresh a nice than any other guitar world artist videos

  • @PRSRod Absolutely. I love these vids. Usually I troll the shit out of stuff, but not this!

  • that lick sounds to me like egipcian music

  • Comment removed

  • @KevinGar550 thats carnatic music from Kerala South India , Look for Mother Jane on youtube you will find a good carnatic band from south India . Guitarist Baiju

  • He used to use the Red Dunlop Jazz III XL picks before Red Bears...

  • errr...ok!

  • Now do that on one of your metal fretlesses.

  • ive never heard anythin like that before on a guitar. pretty boss

  • Of course it sounds Indian, on his books he says that 1 3 4 5 b7 is the indian pentatonic

  • :45 B string on 9th fret. Guthrie's guitar must be some kind of alien specie.

  • the more guthrie we get the better we get

  • Ty Guthrie Govan. You gave me a great start to my day!

  • is he using a penny for a pick?

  • @mightyjake182 Redbear picks. They are 25$ picks, but they are the best most organic and beautiful pick out there, too bad they are so expensive.

  • dat tone

  • damn

    that riff be sexy

  • weird lick

  • That is a REALLY COOL RIFF!

  • ah yeah, he does this lick in waves with cj hann video. similar anyway

  • Everybody Loves Guthrie!

  • please change the title. dint call it "lick of the day" if you're not going to upload a lick every day... not trying to hate, just a pet peeve of mine.

  • @gears2fan888 wouldn't that be daily lick of the day? It could just be the best lick they have recorded today? Lick of Today sounds weird... no idea :)

  • @gears2fan888 it doesn't necessarily imply that its a daily video series

  • Is he using a metal pick?

  • @iTzKSease It is probably a Red Bear Big Jazzer

  • lol ive never seen a guthrie govan vid with dislikes, awsome :)

  • Guthrie!!!!!!!

  • god he looks ill.

  • There's a mistake in this video - he stopped playing.

  • Is that little button next to the volume knob a killswitch

  • @theultimaterockr No. Its a blower switch that selects the bridge pickup and makes it go straight to the jack with out a volume or tone pot attached. Lets him go from clean pickup and volume selection to a distorted one.

  • @theultimaterockr i think it's his "blower" switch or something like that. pressing it activates the bridge pickup with maximum output/volume.

  • Not bad.

  • I'd sell my house to be taught one on one with Guthrie. I jammed with him briefly a while back. You get an even better sense of his genious when up close to him.

  • ¡¡¡Genial, Govan, sos un genio!!!

  • Exactly what scale is this?

  • did someone notice about that tiny button next to the volume ?? it is a secret weapon?

  • Something tells me that Guthrie enjoys the...ah...left handed cigarettes? I bet him and Andy Aledort get together in the GW stock room and get "In Deep" with a Hooka. Haha lol, just kiddin' guys. I love em both. Lotsa talent there.

  • I would give my left nut for an hour of lessons with this man.

  • Guthrie Govan is an amazingly talented guitarist and is extremely well versed in theory. I love how he's still able to simplify things and speak in laments terms unlike some of the guys that just spew out a bunch of nonsensical crap and act like they're too good for everyone else.

  • This man is a genious
