One of my favorite opening numbers in the history of musical theatre. I had the JOY to do this show a few years back... and let me say, I usually feel a bit cheesy doing a shouted "Hey!" at the end of the song, but with this - like you say, the song is so filled with joy, that it just felt natural. It really is a phenomenal opening number, and this is a WONDERFUL deconstruction!
I fell in love with MAME in grade school- it's responsible for my life long obsession with musicals. I can't tell you how many times I have listened to it over the years.
Angela Lansbury sounds so creamy and displays such an amazing musicality. I love the way she bounces those notes on phrases like "Strike the band up" and "Pull the stops out"
Philip Lang's scoring is brilliant- he's my favorite orchestrator and the MAME overture is the BEST in all musical theatre.
You should deconstruct the song Mame from the musical! You think the chorus is pushed to the top of their range in this song. The sops and tenors barely dip below the staff in the big ending. The tenors and sops have a B towards the end and the sops have a C# in the last chord! Not to mention the last 4 chords in the song are so bizarre! When I was in this we had to modify the ending, it was just too hard!
I've listened to this album many many a time. Angela seriously has such a bangin voice though. Which I never reaaallly took note of, but yea, it is just gorgeous and strong.
Also, did not know that about Mr. Herman's mama. How great! Love it
Seth: Loved your comments on "It's Today". All the singers developed at least 2 more high notes in their voices Most went on to great careers---no lost of voices, Mame vocal arrangements were written for 8 singers who were hired before I wrote. David Gale hit the high D on the trumpet. Hilda Harris, a mezzo could hit high C's How about Phil Lang's scoring? Thanks again for your comments.
did Don Pippin vocally arrange Mack and Mabel too? Because on the original cast album the ensemble harmonies are all the same way; reaching for the stars at the top of their range haha
Hi! Im the kid who met you in the airport! haha, angela lansbury is my most favorite actress of ALL time! me and my friends are OBSESSED! I have her picture signed and a Mame signed play bill, she is my inspiration, cause I have acted for over 6 years, she is amazinggg!
My absolute favorite part of "It's Today!" (other than Angela Lansbury being Angela) is that tenor in the chorus. I don't know if anyone will know what I'm talking about but there's one tenor in the chorus that just sticks out to me. He sticks out especially when the chorus sings pianissimo. I don't know why I love that so much. Thank you for doing this deconstruction, I ADORE this song! Mame is so underrated.
you dont need perfect pitch to appreciate music :) even if you cant tell which notes are in that phenomenally high Bb chord you can still tell that it is crazy. dont worry about the notes just listen to the beautiful sounds. :)
Seth, Seth, Seth, you are a national treasure. These deconstructions bring me so much joy. You and I have extremely similar musical tastes and reactions. Please never stop doing these. They are soul-feeding!
I literally had to listen to 7:56 like 3 times because I could not believe what I was hearing. I thought you said Crazy Penis Mode, and I was just shocked.
Me three! I kept playing it back and was like "That doesn't make any sense! 'Penis Mode?' What?" And then I realized he was saying pianissimo and felt really dumb. Knowing I wasn't the only one makes me feel much less so, though. :)
I learned how to park in the driveway to this song. Best experience ever. Can anyone keep a straight face during this song? I assume that they can not. Go Angela, Go Seth, Go Mame. It's today.
Who else thinks that Mame needs to come back for the 2012 season on broadway

I LOVE THIS SONG!!!
It always get me in a good mood.
Manchurian Candidate scared the hell out of me.... and then I saw sweeney todd like five years later on PBS, which renewed my fear of Ms. Lansbury.
I couldn't watch bedknobs and broomsticks until I was an adult.
