Honestly, it kills me to see such talent like Ben Folds be unseen or unheard of. He deserves the spotlight more than these other musicians who auto-tune and basterdize their work with producers. Ben Folds is a one man show, and he praticly pisses excellence. Anyone who disagrees can go play with a loaded gun.
Wd the duckpond near the stage account for the numbers of flying insects buzzing around BFs head during this performance? Of course diehard Spiritualists wd tell you he was surrounded by 'spirit orbs' during this performance - not flying insects...
Perfect song to have a symphony back him up. I always thought this song should get an award for the Best Use of an Inordinately Large Number of Sounds.
How he continually plays the piano like that AND sings even ON KEY at all (which he does better than most people I have heard) Is dumbfounding. This guy is pretty stinking awesome.
Honestly I have to say that I think Ben Folds is a better musician than both Elton John and Billy Joel, and those two are two of the best musician/songwriters/performers ever! So what does that say about Mr. Folds. He's not near as popular, but when it comes to pure talent and skill at piano, he's just as good if not better!
@claaark0 Yes that's true, Ben Folds does have a very Unique voice that definitely deviates from the 'norm' of popular music. Perhaps that's why he's not more popular than he is. Either way, I agree with you that Folds can not compare to John or Joel (specially Elton) vocally, but It's a fact that Ben Folds deserves more recognition than he gets.
@Liles1zc Ben Folds isn't more popular because he's never had big hit songs to be released as singles. Rockin The Suburbs isn't an especially great song. And I know there have been plenty of other good songs. But it's also the time we live in. Elton John and Billy Joel rose to popularity in the 70's not today. Today can really suck.
@MpBrianMay Brick was a huge song. I'd put it down to poor choices of singles for the albums after that. True, rockin the suburbs was annoying as hell, The the entire album that "The Ascent of Stan" comes from is amazing, just poorly marketed
@claaark0 His timbre may not be there, but you can't deny he's a great singer. He hits all the right notes, he never over-embellishes and he can sing like this while playing (usually) more complex piano than Elton John or Billy Joel.
The melody of this song is marvelous and chilling. One of the best musician who can have the priviledge to have his music played by a symphony orchestra
Know what? I'm Seventeen. I'm in the age group that SHOULD like the freaks that we call 'stars' of today. Britney, Ke$ha, etc. But I don't. I like Ben Folds. I like Carbon Leaf. I like GOOD music.
@scottishxplay i totally know what your saying and im with you but you have to think about what you said the age group that "should" like the freaks do any of your friends not like any music like this case i know if i showed this to 100 of my friends theyd be in love
I was at this performance. It was so good the first night, my brother and I decided to go back for the second. Good thing too because we were treated to a kickass "Rock This Bitch" which included the whole orchestra.
I agree, skaitup. I think it might be his cursing. While it doesn't particularly bother me, it's off putting to a lot of people. But you can't argue with his talent. I agree that his biting satire that my generation (I'm 24) values might arguably make him the Elton John of my generation. I would also argue that the boom of rap and hip hop in the last two decades has deadened people's ability to appreciate quality music, but that's me. :)
@skaitup66 Billy joel and Elton are genius's and have written ALOT of songs.......... they also dont' need to swear in thier songs to be good... neither does ben folds.. but more of his songs would be played on the radio if they didn't have swearing in them... Dug his own grave there
@skaitup66 I think although you don't hear his music on the radio very much, he's still a well respected musician amongst those who have that background.
I LOVE how he ended that. He doesn't get caught up in how cool it is to be a GD virtuoso playing with a great orchestra. He just says "yeah, it sucks". What a great guy. Ben Folds is the man.
