  • The goals of the F1 and the Veyron were different. McLaren was aiming for the perfect supercar. The bugatti was made for mad speed while sacrificing track performance. The closest thing to the F1 these days has to be the Zonda, Caparo, or even the CGT if you wanna be open about it

  • Well said. Most people put them the F1 and Veyron in the same group but ultimately they are on completely different ends of the spectrum. As a matter Gordon Murray originally asked for 550BHP but got 627BHP instead BMW felt that because they couldn't meet Murray's weight specification then they would give him a 16% increase in power to make up for the weight. Like you said Bugatti, stuck 4 turbos on a engine and got tremendous bhp, which is what they did last time with the EB110.

  • I would have to say the closest thing to it would either be the Zonda or Ultimate Aero. The Caparo is a completely different type of car and the CGT doesn't have near the speed.

  • Actualy it's only the Carrera GT which is the closest conceptual match to the McLaren.

    They're both relatively compact and (for a Supercar) discretely styled with thoroughbred motorsport engines and built by a quality obssessed manufacturer with it's roots and pedigree firmly motorsport based.

    The Zonda's typical italian flamboyance and lack of racing pedigree etc. makes it much closer to a Lamborghini and the Ultimate Aero just isn't in the same league as any other car mentioned here!

  • I would say the Ultimate Aero comes nowhere near close to the McLaren's quality of workmanship and levels of engineering. A look at the interior is enough.

    Gordon Murray who designed the McLaren F1, also designed several championship winning Formula 1 racecars, many of which were innovative, like the 1978 Brabham Fan-car which had a huge fan creating ground-effect even in slow corners. Another one would be the dominant MP4/4 which won 15 out of 16 races in 1988.

  • you now that bugatti veyron handles perfect on a mountain road but not everybody knows that because they only look at it on the track but yeah mclaren f1 is a fine car

  • Yeah, Koenigsegg (even though they're badass cars) pissed me off when they stole McLarens record by 1 tenth of a MPH... pretty faggot thing to do, I would've packed my car and gone home and left them the record until I could really beat it.

  • C'mon. McLaren won the 24hour of LeMans first time trying back in 1995. They ended the race in 1'st, 3'rd,4'th,5'th and 6'th place.

    Not to mention the McLaren F1 dominated the BPR sportscar series in 1995 and 1996.

    When did Koenigsegg even compete in LeMans or sportscar racing?

    Not to mention the McLaren F1 is still the fastest NA car, all the other that have gone faster have either turbos or superchargers. Some even larger displacements too.

  • It probably will be the standard for a long time to come. The sheer brilliance of the vehicle is so far ahead its time. And the car itself is nothing short of...well I'll be honest I don't think words really do the car justice, at least right now there are no words which I can think of. Sure in time, we will make faster and more powerful cars, but few will ever come close to even being comparable to the F1 on any level

  • Owners of the McLaren can put any option they want in the car, believe me, no one who owns a McLaren is worried about listening to a stereo system in a car where a common option is a headset communication system so you can hear the person next to you over the engine sound. If you're worried about stereo systems don't buy a race car.

  • beauty.... the veyron sucks come on 8 liters 1000hp with 4 turbos thats just lololol a 3 liter na fromula 1 engine puts out well over 900

    and a 1.5 liter turbo formula 1 engine made almost 1400 for qualifying. and i think a mclaren on a nice track would smmmmmmoooookkkeee the veyron

  • Also, if you put road car spec to road car spec, Veyron against McLaren F1 on the Nordschleife, the Veyron comes out 5 seconds faster.  While the race spec McLaren F1 is certainly much faster than the Veyron, that doesn't really matter, because neither car was intended to be a race car anyway.

  • all im really saying is that 1000 hp from 8 liters is not impressive at all not even close you could get a N/A 8 liter to make 1000hp and with four turbos come on now... yea a f1 engine may be a bad comparison. but Ive helped build a few 410 sprint car engines making around 900hp so i just think that with all that boost that piece of junk bugatti should be makeing a little more power.

  • There's also the issue of turbo lag. Smaller engines require more boost, which means larger turbos, which means turbo lag. That was surely a factor. An 8 liter engine requires a lot less turbo boost to achieve 1000 horsepower. Then comes the issue of longevity. Do those sprint car engines last for 20 years?

    I'd hardly call the Bugatti a piece of junk in any sense. In fact, to call a Bugatti a piece of junk is just unfounded, whether it's a good car for its price or not.

  • i would say that they didn't have an issue with lag in the last turbo formula 1 engines. Yea i was just tyring to make a point calling it junk its not but for the price you could build or have something built that would make a mockery of the Bugatti and no the sprint car engines are only good for a season. I still think that the Bugatti is a stupid car and would rather have a f1 or s7 or ccx or fxx any day.

  • Lets see you build a car that has 1000HP with 80% of it's torque availible for 70+% of it's RPM range, has a reliable drivetrain, wisper quiet, comfy, and goes 240+mph. And then do it for less than a million bucks.

    The bugatti is an engineering marvel, the likes of which have never really existed. To compare it to a mclaren is a joke imo. It's not that it's that much better, it's just that much a DIFFERENT type of car.

    All the race car without the race car. If ya know what I mean.

  • Sorry, I didn't mean to imply they did. Just that's what people seem to think. People seem to think they can build a BETTER car for less, but it's impossible. Sure you can build a FASTER car for less, but it's not going to be as nice to drive, be as comfortable, and be drivable by the average idiot. VW put money and development on a level never seen before into the veyron and it's amazing. How people don't see that is beyond me.

  • The McLaren F1 was formerly the fastest street legal production car in the world, holding this record from 1994 to 2005, the longest period the record has been held by any street legal or production car in the history of automobiles! Can you say that about a Bugatti Veyron ????

  • Yeah standard version, McLaren F1 LM version (5 produced and sold) ran 7:11 and is still road car (production car like a veyron).

  • for most people a track is either hard to get to or just dont want to pay to take a couple of laps. drag racing is just one course of racing and can take place just about anywhere. i personaly take my car to the mountains for some tight turns. but those real men you talking about im sure drag race. and race on the track to.
