It appears that YouTube presents a challenge to the cults of various singers of the past, and to those who think there can be only one good tenor or soprano. What a great shock it must be to discover that there are many great talents of many various kinds. I do not expect everyone to have an electic taste, but I would wish some tolerance and good manners. How extraordinary it is to find so many here willing to insult and dismiss Villazon as if he were something common.

Show this highly marketed tenor the "exit door". It makes me sad how far you can get with marketing and Pr. Any person with some knowledge knows he is a weak tenor...And then we are being kind.
@AfroPoli I guess because of the fact we stupid Germans or the stupid Operahouses STILL invite him to come, he has most of his awkward performances in Germany... and the stupid audience applaude him because of his famous name. By the way, why does he always open his mouth so wide, it is not only disappointing to listen to it, it is also upsetting to watch his grimaces.
Yea sings like Mr Bean too. Singing is not about the voice (and its sound production) - it is about how you use it. He certainly has a facile voice and he does put great emotional energy into what he does. But this is not singing, it is sound production. Why do the critics still look to the early recorded singers? Because most of them came from the old school - Bel Canto, the true way to sing, natural and using the spoken word. When will the penny drop with Villazon that he sings against nature
he is young and has loong way to go. I think he will be fine in 10 years but still can't match with greatest tenor of last century like Corelli, Pavarotti, Careras, ....
rolando has a passion for music which comes through in all his performances.mario lanza and placido domingo are tenors who won't be forgotten.this is rolando's time to shine.brilliance isn't exclusive.
Have to confess I didn't enjoy this. Way overdone for my liking - eyes permanently rolled to the back of his head and tugging the music every which way. Not to mention that last note!
I am not trying to persuade you. You mention 'his eyes rolled back' before anything else, which to me is, well,.... telling! I would not argue taste, so, listen to whomever you like... But , then, why did you feel you have to write all that? Again, you... 'had to confess'. In that regard, I respect your choice.
I think the reason I mentioned the eyes rolled back was simply to reflect that fact that I found it so over-acted. That is not only perceptible by watching though, which is why I mentioned that the music was being pulled around too much for me. When listening without looking I was also far more aware of the intonation issues - it was slightly sharp in many places, not just at the end. Just not my cup of tea. I guess I should ask why you like it so much (assuming you do).
Yes, I like his voice, his passion and what he tries to bring to each piece, that is different. Minor imperfections? In a concert, not during a regular opera, when he sang God knows how many other pieces? A little sharp at the end ? So what... Did you ever sing with a full blown orchestra behind? Are there really 100s of voices like that? I don't think so, and he also has 'charisma'. Again, you are free to like others better, I do not enjoy perfectionist remarks. Perfection is the enemy of good!
Judging by most of these comments, the writers fall into one of these categories: 1. charlatan voice teachers 2. deluded students of said charlatans 3. failed chorus singers 4. vecchie regine da merde. V. has a beautiful voice & talent, he just has to relax more and let the music flow naturally.
Singing is not about the voice, it is about how you use it. This man uses it incorrectly, against nature and will be on the scrapheap soon. He has been taught the same false way that they all have been since post WW2. Singing is about simplicity and there is only one register and one voice. He will make his money no doubt, but the career will not last long. This form of teaching is like a disease.
What's so difficult to understand? Villazon has more talent and personality than most singers, he is on fire when he performs and gives 150%, of course people want to see it. It's a bit similar to Di Stefano, Carreras or Callas. These singers were at their peak for only a short time, but while it lasted, they overshadowed their competition. Got it?
Stonato. Saluti
Villazon is the most expressive tenor out there, incredibly beautiful timbre! I could not care less about his technique, better to sing in a way that touches people for 7 years than sing like the majority of tenors out there for 20!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! To soul and passion!!
So great technique means less fealings? So all the great voices like Bjorling, Pertile, Gilgi, Corelli etc, etc, sang whithout emotion? Probebly not!!!!!
The weird faces and sharpness on the high notes are all mainly due to his insufficient technique. Of course, his giant brows contribute to the first, and he tended to push the voice causing sharpness, which must come from singing too many songs out of his fach. I hope the man rehabilitates his voice, makes a return and sings lighter stuff, though the damage at this point may not be undone...
I c0ompletly agree, damn the last sei tu is soooo sharp. he is covering his voice to make it more warm and taking the squillo out...arg. Also, I must say that I have never been a huge fan of Domingo. His technique is much better than Villazon, but they have a similiar timbre. Warm Spanish lyric tenor. Domingo never impressed me, he sounds like just an adequate tenor.
@cutepanda666 Is it required that I sing better? I make my critiques, people seem to agree with them, and maybe we form a general consensus. By the way, I'd LOVE to sing at La Scala next to Netrebko or Domingo as well :)

@LoudFast1234 I never said he didn't do a good job. I'm just trying to explain how this performance illustrates why he needed to get surgery on his chords. If this were Pavarotti I would not be saying any of this, because Pavarotti had a very firm technique. And please, don't take my comment as an affront to your ego (since you obviously like Villazon).
@Jonnybrams yeah sure buddy, that entire paragraph up there is description about how u thought he didnt do a good job. if u ask me it sounds like u only wish u could sing like him. look at a video of pavarotti singing nessun dorma or something he has the same facial expressions as villazon. and i dont really like him that much i like corelli the most.
I bet he doesn't even give a damn about his voice anymore, after all he's probably made enough money to retire now and live out the rest of his life on bank interest. Still sad to realize that all his 'fans' were mainly responsible for his demise. Who cares, though, even with the right technique he would never have been one of the greats. He was just a 'pretty voice'. Not a legendary tenor stuff.
You really should shut up if you don't know what you're talking about....some performers have to make faces when they're singing so the sound comes out right.
the facial expressions dont sing, your voice does, the inside of your mouth , the throat. Anyway he had vocal prblems three times already!! recently had a vocalchord surgery and has no idea if he will be able to sing in 2010!! question: do good singers with a good vocal technique have troubles and surgery??
its not la commedia e finata but " la cariere é finata" !!!
If he would relax a bit more and would stop making faces he'd be much better. It's painfull to watch sometimes. Look at Pavarotti, his mouth is not open wide at almost every note. Heard Villazon live and it was good then, though not a big voice.
Hello, my name is "The Clown", when I go on stage to sing, nobody listen. That's why I like to belt, bellow, scream, bawl, shout, shriek, screech in the most outlandish, hysterical, strident manner. Once I did those things, people start to squander their life savings on me: recordings, concerts, opera performances,... you name it. The higher the price of my concerts' tickets is jerked, the brisker they will sell.
Due to the stupidity of those people, I am living like a king now, perhaps better than a king. Those people, including high minded critic, even go so far as to say that I single-handedly transcend vulgarity, filthiness or whatever, you have to excuse my English, since I am a Mexican. Enough today, I'll keep posted on the "excellent adventure of the clown and his deranged fans" whenever I find time from my busy , busy schedule.
It's really sad to read all these negative comments, let's not forget that he's actually sang in all of the great opera Houses around the world and is still young. Yes, he pushes and forces but I guess he's still finding his voice and seeing what he can do with it, this shows that he can sing with a true Italian giro and shows great promise.
oh common he lost his voice three times in four years. He is abusing his voice with a very wrong technique. He wil loose it forever before he can find it. And isnt four or five years enough to find it??
it not sad to read the comments, its sad to see a good voice and talent go away because of poor technique. now thats sad!!
you people really don't know much about opera and how to sing it not alone what it takes to be a great opera singer. his foward focus could be a bit better, but his rich dark tone and the dexterity of his voice is very impressive not alone the passion in his voice. though some times he pushes too much he has an amazing dramatic tenor voice.
Corelli was a rich voiced spinto, similarly Tucker. Del Monaco & Giacomini were true dramatics. In no way does Villazon have anything like the wealth of tone of the aforementioned. I humbly apologise for my ran

Villazon is the most expressive tenor out there, incredibly beautiful timbre! I could not care less about his technique, better to sing in a way that touches people for 7 years than sing like the majority of tenors out there for 20!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! To soul and passion!!
adamfrandsen 2 years ago

So great technique means less fealings? So all the great voices like Bjorling, Pertile, Gilgi, Corelli etc, etc, sang whithout emotion? Probebly not!!!!!
Bjoerrelli 2 years ago 4
good or bad, funny, weird, whatever....he´s got the biggest fan following in today´s opera world.
ruffomaldito 2 years ago
The weird faces and sharpness on the high notes are all mainly due to his insufficient technique. Of course, his giant brows contribute to the first, and he tended to push the voice causing sharpness, which must come from singing too many songs out of his fach. I hope the man rehabilitates his voice, makes a return and sings lighter stuff, though the damage at this point may not be undone...

@Jonnybrams

@Jonnybrams other than Bjoerling, Kraus, or Gedda who would you recommend?

@cutepanda666 Is it required that I sing better? I make my critiques, people seem to agree with them, and maybe we form a general consensus. By the way, I'd LOVE to sing at La Scala next to Netrebko or Domingo as well :)

@cutepanda666 Bad counter point 'mate'. To frame the debate around "can you do better" lowers everyone's expectations.
Cheers!

@Jonnybrams ur dumb he did a good job!! id like to see u sing like that! if this was pavarotti u would not be saying any of this!
LoudFast1234 1 year ago
@LoudFast1234 I never said he didn't do a good job. I'm just trying to explain how this performance illustrates why he needed to get surgery on his chords. If this were Pavarotti I would not be saying any of this, because Pavarotti had a very firm technique. And please, don't take my comment as an affront to your ego (since you obviously like Villazon).
Jonnybrams 1 year ago
@Jonnybrams yeah sure buddy, that entire paragraph up there is description about how u thought he didnt do a good job. if u ask me it sounds like u only wish u could sing like him. look at a video of pavarotti singing nessun dorma or something he has the same facial expressions as villazon. and i dont really like him that much i like corelli the most.

@Jonnybrams what's a little dick like you talking so smart for? Punk.

I always hear kermit when I listen to Rolando.
Yoni89 2 years ago

SoundAndFury12 2 years ago 2
I bet he doesn't even give a damn about his voice anymore, after all he's probably made enough money to retire now and live out the rest of his life on bank interest. Still sad to realize that all his 'fans' were mainly responsible for his demise. Who cares, though, even with the right technique he would never have been one of the greats. He was just a 'pretty voice'. Not a legendary tenor stuff.

luigipavabartolotti 2 years ago 4

@luigipavabartolotti what you said in italian?... thanks
mauriciomille 9 months ago
You really should shut up if you don't know what you're talking about....some performers have to make faces when they're singing so the sound comes out right.
nelutzzzu123 2 years ago
huh since when is that the case?
the facial expressions dont sing, your voice does, the inside of your mouth , the throat.

Bravo
arafadon 2 years ago
hes still trying to find his voice??????
oh common he lost his voice three times in four years. He is abusing his voice with a very wrong technique. He wil loose it forever before he can find it. And isnt four or five years enough to find it??
it not sad to read the comments, its sad to see a good voice and talent go away because of poor technique. now thats sad!!

I don't think he's that bad guys...
He may not be comparable to Corelli, but I have to say I enjoy listening to him, expecially because of his heartfelt way of singing.
I don't know how long he will last, but still like him
PickBit 2 years ago
you people really don't know much about opera and how to sing it not alone what it takes to be a great opera singer. his foward focus could be a bit better, but his rich dark tone and the dexterity of his voice is very impressive not alone the passion in his voice. though some times he pushes too much he has an amazing dramatic tenor voice.
vocalqueen0115 2 years ago 4
Dramatic tenor?? He is a lyric voice! A lyrico/spinto at the absolute outside.
hiyadroogs 2 years ago
Corelli was a rich voiced spinto, similarly Tucker. Del Monaco & Giacomini were true dramatics. In no way does Villazon have anything like the wealth of tone of the aforementioned. I humbly apologise for my ran
