I know this video is super old, but X Japan started the whole Visual Kei thing in Japan.

Manga and Anime really became popular in the 90's, which was probably frowned more upon then than it is today, and a lot of the "Otakus" probably strived to be different, so they started trying to be like the characters in the Mangas, or the bands that did opening songs to animes. And Anime Conventions should also be taken into account.

I also think Harajuku and Lolita style played a big role as well.

The hair style of scene kids came from visual kei, hair clips from Oshare kei. The clothes seems to be influenced by Harajuku, and decora. Visual kei kids dressed up to look like their favorite Bands while scene kids goes to local concerts. There's a big difference between being inspired by something and being a wannabe.

@Marys8755 I using windows movie maker for the first time and it crashed my computer alot. So I had to start over several times. Some of these pictures and animated gifs were hard to find at the time. Plus windows movie maker doesnt always accept certain pictures or music. Editing takes a long and you dont want your video to be sloppy looking and the list goes on. But you wouldnt know anything about that now would you? Cause you dont make youtube videos. ya peace :)
