I am a 48 year old man. My friend lost his mother a few years back, and I couldn't think of what to say to him in his time of sorrow. So, I bought a Sympathy card and wrote the last part of Helen Reddy's song. He was touched by this simple, and yet profound lyric. Even now, when I hear this song, I tear up. Even though I rarely have ever cried.
My Step-Mom used to sing this song all the time to my younger step-brother while ignoring her other son. Me, my brother and my sister didn't care because she hated us anyway, but I thought it was kind of f'd up to do to her other son. I can still hear this song as we would drive to some unknown destination as a "family".
Thank you for posting this. I always used to think of my mother and me as...us against the world....she passed away in May and even though I am an adult; I miss her so much. She was my greatest gift from God. She never had it easy, but she was a wonderful mother. She made life worth living. Made everything seem beautiful and all dreams possible. God has a great angel up there.
Such a wonderful song, it really grabs the heart and says "here i am". My sincere condolences to all of you, your losses and your pain, but at least the song helps remind you of those who are gone and the wonderful love there was and in some ways, "still is". Sweet dreams.
My mom passed away few months ago. I was feeling really alone and had a really bad day felt like I was alone like everyone was against me. I do not know this song nor do I have any music of this artist, but all of a sudden this title popped in my head I typed in my computer and this song came up:) I think I may have heard it over 35 years ago.
After my father died, this was my mother's & my song...she and I against the world..even now, all these years later, I can't hear this song without crying...a beautiful tribute to mothers everywhere...I love & miss you, Mom. Thank you for posting this.
Thanks a lot for letting me hear this wonderful song again! I always cry when I hear it because it brings to me memories of great moments with my daughter. Today, she will sing this song to her son. God Bless You, and all single mothers!
This was my song with my mom, we used to dance to this but unfortunately she died....so i am left to carry on with memories to get me true...i'll love her forever and miss her until we meet again:-) Eternally grateful for the resurrection

@codybaragia I am so very sorry for your losses. That gift your Mom gave you of this priceless song will help in times of stress. I am crying as I write this, as I miss my own mother--she was 24 carot gold. God Bless.
My mother, who was my best friend, always said this was "our song". She's been gone 10 years, and I still cry when I listen to this. I just have such wonderful memories of her singing this to me when I was young and of the wonderful times se shared even after I grew up. I still miss her so much, but this song makes me feel she's still right next to me, singing as she always has!
This song reminds me of the days I was raising 3 sons as a single Mom. I often sang this to my youngest son when he was sad. He has never forgotten it and wanted it played at his wedding for the Mother Son dance. Although this was a very difficult time in our lives the song still makes me smile when I remember him as a toddler. He's now 33.
I raised my son by myself and this was the song I would sing to him over an over. When he was an infant, he would have his crying hour, but if I put this on and danced with him held tightly in my arms, he would stop. Tomorrow is his 24th birthday and I just wanted to hear this song again. Ironically, he is a singer/songwriter now. Thank you for posting and for honoring your mother in such a special way. This one got me through some pretty rough times.

Paul Williams is a genius,he appeared in a scene in the fairly recent movie, "Georgia Rule" Fonda and Lohan, caught him in the seventies as a race car driver, hails from Omaha Ne. same as Warren Buffet.Paul's brother was a rocket scientist with NASA . Paul in a unique way sounds and reminds me of Truman Capote.
my mom was a single mom raising two boys. she had alot of bad luck but she always loved me and my brother. she made sure we were happy. on some of those bad luck days she would sing this song to us before bed. she passed away two years ago and i miss her dearly. this song takes me back to those childhood days when it was just the three of us. i can still see and hear her singing it and my brother and i would say the last line. I Love You Mommy thanks for posting
I used to sing this to my son. I was a single parent too and I raised him without any help from his father. I would sing this song to him all the time. As a newborn he would cry, but if I sang this and rocked him, he would stop. It brings back some very bittersweet memories. Tomorrow is his 24th birthday! Thanks for honoring your mother in this very special way.
@tomitalo My thoughts and prayers are with you, you only have one Mother and God I miss mine so much as well as you do, she was our best friend. Keep the good memories, Michele
@tomitalo It was just me & My mom too - your story brought a tear to my eye. My mom is still alive and living with me and I wouldn't trade these moments for anything. Blessings to you and your Brother - A mother's Love is with you Al-Ways :)
@tomitalo me too!!! miss being a kid in the 70's!! my mom would sing this and cry.... she had a brain anorism and never recovered. She doesnt know who I am, I miss her more then I could ever say...... :(
@tomitalo Aww, your comment was so sweet. Thanks for sharing it. I am single mom and I have two sons so I know what those days must have felt like for her. May your mother rest in peace from all the things she had to endure but at least she had two wonderful sons to love and who loved her in return.
This was my son and my song. After his Father left when he was just a little child he used to ask me to put on "Our Song Mommy". It still means the world to us when we hear it.
I lost my Father years ago, but alas I had my Mother and we were the best of friends, and unfortunately I lost her about a year and half ago and I would do anything to bring her back, I miss her so much, but I have great memories of her and I, I was the youngest and I remember being home with her, baking cookies, etc. Please cherish your Mother while you have her, time goes by way too fast, Michele.
I think Helen Reddy had a special needs child who was the subject of this song. How beautiful this is. Thanks for posting. What a nice surprise to find this on Youtube.
Bittersweet remembering my mom. She passed away went I was a young lady and now I am as old as her and this song still leaves me weeping as it did way back then.
My mom sang this to my dog when he was dieing of bone cancer. "You and me against the world" were the last words she said to him. Just hearing it makes me sob.
My mother was a single parent, and I came out just fine. No Drugs, no drinking no teenage pregnancy and I am a productive and polite adult, fathers are overrated.
I was 5 months old when my Dad walked out, this is Mine and My Moms Song 42 Years Later...Just lost a Brother Last week Jan 6th, My Moms song to him was Danny Boy she use to Rock and sing that to him when he was a Baby my Brother Danny RIP!
my mom was always an inspiration in my life. She has taught me a lot and also taught me about the love of God and my Lord/Saviour, Jesus Christ. I remembered winning first place in every bible study quizzes from 1st to 6th grade, only because she was there and she believed in me more than I did in myself and helped me with my studies. I will always cherish her memories. I miss the mother's days and the summer visits with her, but I will always have her memories with me. I love you mom. R.I.P.
It was just my mother and I for most of my life...she was an awesome mother who adopted me when I was a day old. I think of us when I hear this song. She is gone now and I will have to carry her memory on.
Co-written by Paul Williams and Ken Ascher. Paul co-wrote "We've Only Just Begun" by The Carpenters and "Evergreen" by Barbara Streisand. Ken co-wrote "Rainbow Connection" from The Muppet Movie.
My mums sang this to me when I was a young child to sooth me to sleep and it has stuck with me ever since but only today (20 years later) I have googled it. What a beautiful song and it holds so many memories for me. Luckily my mum is still here with me today and although she is going through some VERY hard times at the moment listening to this song has made me realise that nothing is more important that our love and bond.... I love you mum please get better soon xxxxxxx
this song helped so much when i was a single mother. We made it son! Not even his half brothers know what we went through. They had is sooooo much better. I love you David! your doing great!
Who's the 1 grouch who doesn't like this 1? Billboard's #57 song of '74. Helen hit #1 AC,#9 pop. Love the dialogue from Helen's daughter, Tracy. How old was Tracy when this was recorded. God bless!
I LOVE THIS SONG. MY MOM'S GONE TO BE WITH OUR SAVIOR, AND HEARING THIS MAKES ME THINK OF HER YOUNG AGAIN
, LAUGHING AND HAVING A GOOD TIME.SHE ALSO TAUGHT ME WE ARE NEVER ALONE IN THIS WORLD OR THE NEXT WHEN WE ACCEPT CHRIST AS OUR SAVIOR. THIS HAS HELPED ME THROUGH MANY SAD TIMES WITHOUT HER.
What a wonderful song! It really does describe the bond between a mother and child. I am a divorced parent of an 18 month old and this song bonds me and my son together.
I love what you said nothingbuthumanloesfor. That is very true.
I still say this was made in the epitome of the mid 70's pop era. Helen appeared on several American popular TV shows when it was a hit. What a rare cross-over it was that boggled US mainstream! At the age of 15, I will always remember hearing her sing this LATE at night on radio against my ear as we kids fell asleep. The lyrics are what got me.
@BAhern63 I can only imagine how painful this was for you, and I am glad the song gave you a vehicle to express your sorrow at losing such a special person, in your life. I pray for you that since then, you have as Helen sings, found the strength to carry on, without your wonderful mother. Good luck with everything you do.
This is a great timeless song, written by actor/singer Paul Williams and performed with perfection by Helen Reddy. This awesome beautiful classic was used in several tear jerking scenes during 1989-90 in the CBS-TV soap opera "The Young And The Restless".
I took m y daughter and left an abusive situation and we started a new life - just the two of us - this song was our "theme song" - she is married now with a family of her own and deliriously happy but still remembers this song and how it was "our song"
As a male teenager when this was a hit, I recall clearly hearing on AM radio late in the nights while going to sleep. Great pop music 70's memories indeed. Still brings tears to my eyes! but in a good way!
@Mod60s I love that you are a balance person and to me that make u a real man in my book. I believe part of our evolution is learning balance harmony with both female and male energies and if more people were like that, it would be less discrimination and more peace in the world and appreciate for music and other things etc. and u being very sincere make me happy
I first heard that song on the evening of 4 January 1979, a few hours after I heard the news that my cousin had been killed being struck by a train on a level crossing! Such a sad moment to reflect on with her death, all these years later.
The song was so poignant, and reminded me how lucky I was, that I had not in fact lost my mother. We should hold on to all the precious people in our lives that we love, and not be annoyed by unimportant things, for one day they won't be with us anymore.
Sometimes people don't realize that many Mothers are alone with just a child and no Father in the picture due to death or just leaving...Sad but yet a beautiful song all in one. Remember to make those memories so that you have something Special to remember not just A Mother's Love For Her Child And A Daughter's Love For Her Mother. You Need Memories Fun Times To Sustain You When You Are Alone and that goes for stories prayers and just good ole' fashioned fun. Love & Memories Will
@GaCountryGirl024 I would sing this song to my Daughter at bed time to help keep bad dreams away and she still to this day and now she is 24 remebers and has passed this song onto my Granddaughter
@GaCountryGirl024 for me , its the other way around, im a single dad raising my disabled son without mom in the picture. and we face alot of struggles and discrimination ourselves
@riker2011 I think society expects men to father children with women who will make good mothers. The job of men -- to protect women and children. I mean that in the most constructive way. So you can understand where the discrimination comes from. But protecting your child means you have all the right stuff.
@riker2011 God bless you and hope all is well with you and son. I'm sorry about your loss. It's a sad thing to raise a child on your own, but much worse when people discriminates against you and your son. May the good Lord see you through the struggles and the hurdles of life.
@GaCountryGirl024 Amen, I miss my Mother so much, she loved this song while she was alive and sometimes I wondered why. I was the youngest of three girls and I know now why I was born, it was to be her best friend, and she was mine as well, and to take care of her while she was ill, however, I do dream about her almost every night, today I told one of the funniest stories of her and you are right, at least we have our memories, and they are awesome, Love, Michele
My daughter is autistic. Some people in this world wouldn't want her alive. But Momma does and I love you more than anybody in the world, forever and forever. <3 Thank you so much for this video.
my mom told me about this song today, and how much it means to her. now it is a special song to me too. I love you mom. and we made it!!!!! just me and you against the world! my mom raised me and my two younger brothers alone, and It was just me and her for many years! now more than 25 years later.... I know what "Me against the world" came from. I love you mom. us against the world!!!!!!!!!
What happen John, my son ! You were suppose to be with me, you and me against the world ! And now your gone, (deceased). Now I have only your pictures and my mind of you! Miss you ! MOM
This was mine and my mother's song. It always brings back good memories of being united and loved unconditionally. I love you Mommy and miss you terrilbly.

This song reminds me of my Nana my mom was never there. My Nana passed away on May 3 and now i feel lost. I suffer from depression 1 week before she died i took a bottle of pills thank god i was out to say goodbye. Where do i go from here? If anyone can help let me know thanks.
@perfectchinadoll81 You go forward and thank God for her life and what she did and continues to do for you through her Spirit and what she Taught You! Never, Ever give up! Please heed these words from someone who tried to commit suicide 31 years ago. Thank God I didn't succeed! If I had, my beautiful daughter would not be here. Cry, Scream, Grieve, and then pick yourself up and do your Nana proud!!
@perfectchinadoll81 If you want yar nana to be happy to where she is right now, ya better start life anew...for sure she wants you to be somebody and that's what u have to focus on. :-D

My mother used to sing this to me when around 4 or 5 (perhaps both ages). My mom is still alive & well, by the way. But, this song is still bitter sweet. Reason: this song will be almost UNBEARABLE to listen to (for ME anyway) most times I hear it.
this song reminds me of my sister and my cat addie before addie died and my sister left my family. It broke my heart and my mom's heart because of what ryan did. he was trying to keep addie away from the dog's they were climbing on him so he did the stupidest thing he accidentaly threw addie my sister' s cat at the door and killed her. he was trying to put her on my sister's bed. it made heather angry and then she left. and also this song reminds me of the time i was in a behavorial center.

This song has torn me up since my daughter was abducted 33 years ago. It may suggest the DEATH of oneacceptance, finality and healing through memories. In MY case, letting go was never an option, which I struggled with for 10 years. Then I had a son who helped fill that hole in my heart. Recently, my daughter married and had a baby girl she named after me. I visited them Nov '09. SPECIAL! But there are many lost years Ill never be able to make up for. This song ALWAYS makes me cry.
& when i was around 10 years old' That was the 1ST & Last time i Heard this Song. but Now that i know the Name of this song' it Wont be the Last time that i'll Listen to it.
My daughter was abducted by her father & stepmother 33 years ago long before there were any laws against it and I never got her back. This song tore me up at the time and still does. She's married now to a handsome man and has a baby girl of her own she named after me. I got to visit them last November. Needless to say, THIS is OUR song.
i give god glory praise and honor for my sons full recovery as if it never happend thank you jesus. please pray for all the baby n children for god to watch over them at all times gbys
My mom passed away in 2006. I remeber as a little girl she sang this to me! I think she was worried about how her children would feel if she was gone? Now she is I will never forget my mom! I remember her crying to this and now I do the same with my daughter i guess we don't want out children to forget us!
I'm so very sorry. I sent this to my daughter hoping she'll understand how it ment to ME after she was abducted by her father 33 years ago. Now that she has her own little girl, I'm sure she will.
For some rason this song reminds me of the day the world trade centers came crashing down. The 1,000s of people that died and left so many children without their parents, almost instantly. This is so very sad to think about. God Bless all those poor children left without their Mothers and/or Fathers.
I love you Mom! Words cannot explain the void left in my heart left by your passing. Thank you for the right decisions, love and direction in my life.
Remember what you worked so hard to build in my life? All the times you cleaned toilets for me, working those long hours...defending me like a huge mother bear...against anyone who dared mistreat me...be it neighbourhood bully, teacher, parapro, or even Daddy.
The way you welcomed my wife into your heart, as if she were your own daughter.
Even when you couldn't cook for us anymore, you always made sure we had food to eat when visiting you.
This song tears me up..

Thanks for honoring your mother in this very special way.

my mom was always an inspiration in my life. R.I.P.

Love & Memories Will
See You Thru.

riker2011 1 year ago

For some rason this song reminds me of the day the world trade centers came crashing down. The 1,000s of people that died and left so many children without their parents, almost instantly. This is so very sad to think about. God Bless all those poor children left without their Mothers and/or Fathers.
