@TosXMellow On the contrary. This bomb was essential for the US to win the war. If the US didn't win the war, than the Axis Powers would have had time to develope their nukes first, and they'd have the guts to use it on anything and everything to oppose them.
Though I will admit, these things are scary as hell. In fact, these are quite weak, a modern nuke would cause the atmosphere to catch fire, causing the entire earth to turn into a lifeless burning rock.

@Swede224 I'd like to see your source(s) for this. I've never heard of a Japanese atomic weapon program, nor am I aware of their having acquired the technology through espionage. As far as I know, the only other atomic weaponry in development during the war was the German project.
For those who are interested, there is a really excellent play called "Copenhagen" about Bohr, Heisenberg, et. al. during the 1920's and 30's. Go see it if it's playing near you!

@Selkie15 hey, from what i gather i think they set off little rockets at marked intervals just before they detonate the bomb. the resulting smoke trails in a line next to the resulting nuke cloud gives some indication of comparable scale size to determine the height/size of mushroom cloud. seems like the only reason they are there, unless some unlucky model rocket clubs happen to be in the area at every nuke test...lol

@Ferahgo100 No, they most certainly WERE tested on US soldiers...in very dodgey circumstances. This was a common practice in the 50s and 60s, and only recently have the respective governments accepted liability for the innevitable radiation-induced illnesses as a conswequence.
Shame on those governments that still deny the veterans and / or their families compensation.

@Etimos No sir, you are incorrect. This is the Trinity bomb test, the first ever test of an atomic bomb. There were around 250 people there, and none were closer than 9 km. I'm pretty sure that, being the first ever atomic bomb test, they would make sure that everyone who was there was safe.

In the context of this exact bomb test, there may not have been soldiers there, but at some point later the US military did post lines of soldiers at various distances from air burst nuclear detonations to test the bomb's long-range effects.
I cant identify a specific bomb based on a few moments of footage without any more information, so I can only take your word on this being trinity.

@Etimos I can tell that this is the Trinity test because of the way it looks, and because of the announcer at around 14 seconds says the yield of the bomb as 20 kt. And yes the US military may or may not have tested an atomic bomb on its troops in an indirect way, but i'm just calling this video out for saying that THIS bomb was tested on US troops.
