@Backin2time Hello. Docking the ship... could you mean Lunar Rescue? I only mention it because it's also from 1979, i don't think it's very similar to Galaxian at all. But maybe you are just referring to Galaga, where you can let an enemy capture your ship and then if you shoot that enemy, your ship will "dock" with your captured ship for increased firepower; but that has nothing to do with going to the next level. I hope one of those games is the game you are thinking of :)
For me, at 17 years old, this game was back in 2002 when those little game systems came out to bring them back. My parents bought them, got tired of them and gave them to me...that's when I played the classics including Galaxian. It's weird to hear these sounds, because they were different on the newer game system, but still the same gameplay. So many hours spent! I'm satisfied with a 50,000 record.it started to piss me off Lol! It pissed off my cousins beating him too, because he played it most
Yes the sounds are very different on NES and other systems. The sounds in this video are quite close to the original galaxian arcade sounds, except the background hum should be much faster at the start of a flag/stage.
The game does get frustrating when you hit that "boundary" that impedes your progress.
I'm really glad lots of ppl are still playing Galaxian, and other classics. Timeless enjoyment... Thx for your message :)
Get the Mame rom for Galaxian on, 'Romnation'. Do NOT OPEN the rom, instead, keep it zipped and insert it into the Mame emulator. Then you will be up and running and playing the original Galaxian, without having to put coins in a slot, ha!
Gameplay was the key to these types of arcade games. This is why the home system, Ninetendo have been so successful with their games over the years, because their software offered unparalled gameplay. No good having the best graphics going, it it fails in gameplay.
That was another thing about Galaxian, in that it always felt special to play. Even now, it has never lost that feeling. There are very very few arcade games you can say that about over the years.
Once the yellow 'Leader Ships' are hit, the rest stop firiing for around ten seconds...because they are grieving, haha! Hit as many as you can within ten seconds, before the rest begin to fire again.
Anoher game I used to love a lot was Gorf. Gorf was a number of games that incorporated a version of Galaxian within its system - as well as a coloured version of Space Invaders.
I used to love the coffee/cocktail table versions of this game too. Very stylish, and really beautiful to play on. I wonder if you can still get them on E-Bay, and I wonder how much they would be now?
I really miss those days of the arcade. There was never any trouble, just friendly banter and rivalry. Those days were 'innocent' and carefree, long before the internet was ever thought about. The arcades were OUR meeting places, the places to hang out. I could spend an hour or so on one machine, just by using ONE COIN, that is how cheap it was, ha!! But that was only if you were good at the game. you could make one coin last forever.
I have this on Mame. Brilliant to be able to play it without having to insert coins, ha! Man, you are one mean player on this. I well remember spending many a happy Saturday and Sunday afternoon in my local arcade trying to crack the high score on Galaxian. Let us not forget though that if it had not been for Space Invaders, then Galaxian and indeed, Galaga, would never have happened.
I had the privilege of playing on the original dedicated cab today at the Riveria in Las Vegas. There are few things on this earth cooler than playing with the music cranked up full blast. This little kid came up to me while I was playing and was all like "WHOAAA MISTER" he he. I miss the old arcades so bad... ;)
I really prefer Galaxian over Space Invaders any time. The gameplay is so much more dynamic and therefore more fun. I played this game on my Atari 800XL, I dont remember Galaga at that time...
It's true that Galaga has more variation (most sequels do, hopefully). But Galaxian was the original and even tho it's fairly repetitive it has more nostalgic value for me because i didn't start playing Galaga until much later. Anybody else here play both?
@Jelle147 I play both Galaxian and Galaga even today!! Galaga has a bit more complex mechanics! However Galaga has a major negative that ruins the game for me. In Galaga you can have 2 shots on screen simultaneously ( which means 4 shots for 2 ships etc.) That makes Galaga more of a pray-and-spray game! In Galaxian you can have only 1 bullet at a time which encourages aiming and synchronizing your shot exactly when the enemy does the kamikaze dive so you can reload your bullet faster! Nice video
@Jelle147 You think? I see what you mean although some of us believe that Galaxians is the successor to Space Invaders, which is the successor to breakout. After Galaxians came Pheonix, then Terra Cresta, which led to the history of the vertical scrolling shooter. :)
Yes Galaxian came out in 1979, and was the first to employ true RGB colors instead of color-overlays.
The use of the word flashback in the title is personal nostalgia and refers to the time when i was a kid playing Galaxian, which was from 1982-1984/5.
this is where my addiction for galaga kicked off, so much so that i ended up buy a cocktail cabinet version of Galaga. I used to have money then LOL now I have kids. I still have my 1981 Galaga :)
You've certainly got the knack for knocking out 800 point scores for the 'Admirals'. I never had the cojones to stay in the same spot long enough but you make it look easy.
Galaga's okay too, but Galaxian was one of the first videogames i ever played as a kid, and always felt/feels special to play. I also like Galaxian a little more because even tho Galaga has more variation, i think it's more challenging to have a single shot at a time to try to conquer your space-enemies : )
I never got the hang of Galaga my highest on that game was just over 13,000 and I posted that after I'd had 3.5 pints of Dry Blackthorn draught cider, never got near that score when I was sober. :) The 13,000 was the high score on the machine at the time.
...Remember that you're only given a maximum of one bonus man (a total of four lives throughout the game, unlike Galaga or Asteroids), so, try to stay alive as long as possible!...
During an attack, a typical alien ship will bank from one side of the screen to the other side---and that's the most trickiest part, for, they can corner you that way; so, as it moves to the middle of the screen, move your ship to the opposite side...
And watch out for the purple ones!!! GO, FELLOW GALAXIANS!!!!!!!!
1-Shoot the attackers AT A PARALLED direction regardless of their direction from you.
2-Once the yellow attacking leader ship is hit, try to clear as many attacking ships as you can within ten seconds or so because they'd stop firing their ammos.
3-Nail the purple ones as soon as you can 'cause they're the bitches of the bunch and don't let them corner you.
4-Try to reserve your ammo during the charging mode, for, you'd gain more points!
The trick with the alien craft that sweeps off the screen then come back at you at a very acute angle, is not to move away from the ship, that way just leads to it crashing into you in the corner, you have to move towards it, shooting it just as it passes above your gun turret.
@RoCK80sGR This was on the original Galaxian back in 1979 on the coffee table/cocktail version. I won £50 in a competition on it. You started with 3 ships gained one at 7,000 and a second at 30,000 if memory serves. Highest score Galaxians 235,000, Space Invaders 212,000( bonus base if you shot the mother ship at the end of a round max 8 at a time), RadarScopoe 178,000 and Angler Dangler 105,000

I've never had access to settings on arcade versions of Galaxian, but in MAME you can only set the extra ship at a single-score setting, normal is 7,000 (as i remember it from the arcade versions, and as is also the official TwinGalaxies setting) - i've never heard of 30,000 maybe that's on a different platform. 235k nice score :)
For those of you out there who think this game is difficult and tricky, it's not, and here's how, as being demonstrated by Jelle147...It is kind of tricky, but, not difficult...
The way I used to played this game was just to shoot the attacking ships; then, I would gain more points per level...128,000 highest points, heh, how's that?!!!...
Thanks a millions, whoever you are, for sharing this---it brings back many childhood memories!!!
Yes, the waiting game... i guess i was never patient enough for that, and figured that if I'm gonna get a lot better, I'd have to play past the point where the difficulty maxes out anyway. I.e. it didn't matter how many points you scored in the first couple of stages, if you planned on getting to stage 250+ ;)
Is 128,000 your highest score?
Anything above 100k shows that someone knows what they're doing...
And you're welcome :)
PS: download MAME and you can play Galaxian & more!
Good score, show a very good level of skill, my highest was 235,000, mind you that was on the coffee table version not the cabinet one. The one flaw with the game was the alien missiles disappear against the background so even though there is no craft above you, your ship would suddenly explode.
First apologies I meant cocktail cabinet not coffee table. The version I played gave you 3 ships to star and a bonus ship at 5,000 and I think 30,000 so you had 5 ships in total. I regularly took up to 2 hours to play the game and quite often I'd have a crowd of people wathcing me. I won a competition playing Galaxian, won £50. The machine wasn't in an arcade it was in a club above one and after playing one of those games I was so hungry I needed something to each.

Yeah the reason for that is so that back in the old days ppl couldn't marathon these types of games, and thereby cause arcade owners to miss out on a lotta quarters : )
I think there's a lot more skill and accuracy involved when you're only allowed to shoot 1 missile at a time like in Galaxian!! In Galaga you barely need to aim.
You are technically correct of course, but the flashback refers to when i was playing the game, which was from 1982 until '85 (picked it up again in 2007 lol). Also, the parts & operating manual didn't come out until feb'80; the release of the videogame was in very late '79 i think.
i managed to keep a pub open for an extra 40 mins once playing this as i got 48 flags or summit one distant summer ages ago, great game, i remember a faster greenish one with a larger fleet and a full row of yellow ones at top but it was a 3/4 stage certain death job for me
The Golden Age of Electronic Video Games. Those were the good times. You got the Pong, Space Invaders, Asteriods, Galaga and Galaxians, Pacman, Defenders, Tron, Centipede, Robotron. Today kids play World of Warcraft.
Hey thanks for the info Aart. I just scored 112,200 and wasn't really taking it seriously, just warming up. lol
128,540 is #10 at Twin Galaxies. If I get one of those mad games that seems to go on forever I should be able to go higher. I find taking a shot and moving a fraction at the same time helps my aim when they swoop.
I already qualified for #8 then. I doubt I could beat 196,300 but I like challenges. I'll use that INP thing next time I play. Space Harrier is my real game, I'm better on that. lol
Hey Aart, I might give it a shot and should be able to break into the Top Ten at Twin Galaxies. What kind of video recording software can I use to grab MAME and is that judged to be acceptable?
Hi Junky (didn't feel comfortable calling you 'babe' lol). MAME has a recording feature all its own which produces an .inp file; that is the only way MAME recordings are accepted. You'll need to download WolfMame version 0.106 from the TG site (i'll pm you a direct link if you don't already have that version). Once you get it set up it's a mere right-click on the romset to "play & record" your game :)
I used to think I was amazing on Galaxian back in the arcades in the 80's. Now I realise I was just very good. Reading the scores posted here I wasn't fit to wipes these other player's boots. Once you work out the enemy patterns it's fairly easy to get to level 20 but if you misstime your one shot and another doesn't spawn in time it's possible to loose a life. I rarely got hit by an enemy shot, but they can crash into you if you misstime yours. 10p a credit.
Even tho it's a very repetitive game, it's still today one of my absolute favourites. I was very determined to break the world record. And yes it's best to not miss too much or you're doomed :) Timing is everything...
good quick fast gameplay...you play it exactly the same as me..Make every shot count and get the 800 whenever possible...Excellent...:) After level 15 the game just loops so you can play as long as you want really...Ive been up to level 42 with 4 lives left it took me an hour then my fingers were hurting so just quit.. Great game...:)
But no the game does not loop after level 15, no idea what version you play, and I'll try not to toot my own horn when i say this but, since I'm world champ on Arcade and MAME versions, and since i play "exactly the same as you" (even tho I've gotten a little better since this video), I'd love to see you play and know what your hiscore is : ) Level 42 is generally around 150k, better than most. Perhaps you can submit a recorded game to Twin Galaxies sometime?
Your welcome fellow galaxian..I play the original NAMCO version from 1980...Its a screen on a table, i think its called The cocktail version where you sit down to the table...I was the best in england up until the arcade shut down..My best score was 45 levels and a score of 167k then they had to pull the plug as it was closing time.! And they were annoyed that it only cost me 10 pennys for hours of gaming..!Yeh sure ill do a vid for you...:) Watch this space.
Shame, otherwise you would have seen that after 48 flags you have to count yourself.Played this game as a kid when it first came out .Played in all video-halls,high score 396820 but me mate had 426000!Was thrown out once when close to a local record..
I had that happen to me when playing Space Invaders, I'd been playing for over 2 hours and they wanted to close the arcade. They wouldn't refund me my 20p though. I was good at 4 games Space Invaders ~212,000, Galaxian 235,000, Radarscope 178,000 and Angler Dangler 107,000. A friend David "Fozzie" Foster was brilliant at Asteroids and Defender, unfortunately he passed away a couple of years ago.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't this game a spinoff the the original game called GORF? I grew up in the 70's. I used to play this game at the Northridge bowling alley in Southern california back in the late 70's.
Yes you get twice the points value when shooting aliens in attack mode, that's correct (except the yellow flagship which has 5 possible values). So thx for the tip, but once you're able to reach level 300 or 450, it really is of no concern whether you got 10,000 points after level 3, or 11,500. :P
ur pretty good! i play this game on my nintendo 64. this is better than galaga cuz its harder. u can only shoot 1 missle at a time, ur ship is slower, and its easier to miss
The N64 version of Galaga is harder than the NES or Arcade versions of Galaga though (yes, I have a NES version!), because you can shoot almost as many shots as you want in the arcade version... at least on the one at my local roller skate... place... thing.
The N64 version only lets you shoot two at a time (four with double ship).
Anyway... I'm not too good, but at least I'm a little bit better than I used to be.
As a side note, even though I haven't even beaten the score in this video, I hold almost all the Galaxian hi-scores in my town because nobody here is any good at it! =]
Same with Galaga, but I quit the machine last mentioned because I was playing for too long and the place was shutting down for the night lol.
I used to love playing galaxians, i revisit this game on mame occasionaly, but get bored after a few level. I think this was the first ever color video game. Space invaders originally used colored cellophane to create the illusion of color.
Which was the game similar to this in which you had to "DOCK" the ship B4 going to the next level??

You started with 3 ships gained one at 7,000 and a second at 30,000 if memory serves nay have been 4,000. It is 30 years since i played. Highest score Galaxians 235,000, Space Invaders 212,000( bonus base if you shot the mother ship at the end of a round max 8 at a time), RadarScopoe 178,000 and Angler Dangler 105,000
Zzarzaxx 1 year ago
@Zzarzaxx

Extra life at 7,000 is normal, and this video is from WolfMAME106.

For those of you out there who think this game is difficult and tricky, it's not, and here's how, as being demonstrated by Jelle147...It is kind of tricky, but, not difficult...
grumpypant 1 year ago
The way I used to played this game was just to shoot the attacking ships; then, I would gain more points per level...128,000 highest points, heh, how's that?!!!...
Thanks a millions, whoever you are, for sharing this---it brings back many childhood memories!!!
grumpypant 1 year ago
@grumpypant

Zzarzaxx 1 year ago
@Zzarzaxx 235,000-POINT TOP GALAXIANS ACE, HEH?!!!...
No way, dude, you're yanking my hype there! With only a limited of four
given space ships to spare, how did you lasted so long? Therefore, I
don't believe you.
grumpypant 1 year ago
@grumpypant

Hey thanks for the info Aart. I just scored 112,200 and wasn't really taking it seriously, just warming up. lol
128,540 is #10 at Twin Galaxies. If I get one of those mad games that seems to go on forever I should be able to go higher. I find taking a shot and moving a fraction at the same time helps my aim when they swoop.
babejunky 2 years ago
That #10 is for the Arcade track, MAME is tracked separately (just choose the platform when browsing/searching).
Jelle147 2 years ago
I already qualified for #8 then. I doubt I could beat 196,300 but I like challenges. I'll use that INP thing next time I play. Space Harrier is my real game, I'm better on that. lol

Hey Aart, I might give it a shot and should be able to break into the Top Ten at Twin Galaxies. What kind of video recording software can I use to grab MAME and is that judged to be acceptable?
babejunky 2 years ago
Only 65920 tonight! First time I've played in years so not too bad.
babejunky 2 years ago
Indeed it isn't, good job - i think i got just under 60 when i first played it in MAME which was the first time in 24 yrs.
Jelle147 2 years ago
Hi Junky (didn't feel comfortable calling you 'babe' lol). MAME has a recording feature all its own which produces an .inp file; that is the only way MAME recordings are accepted. You'll need to download WolfMame version 0.106 from the TG site (i'll pm you a direct link if you don't already have that version). Once you get it set up it's a mere right-click on the romset to "play & record" your game :)
Jelle147 2 years ago
I used to think I was amazing on Galaxian back in the arcades in the 80's. Now I realise I was just very good. Reading the scores posted here I wasn't fit to wipes these other player's boots. Once you work out the enemy patterns it's fairly easy to get to level 20 but if you misstime your one shot and another doesn't spawn in time it's possible to loose a life. I rarely got hit by an enemy shot, but they can crash into you if you misstime yours. 10p a credit.
babejunky 2 years ago
Even tho it's a very repetitive game, it's still today one of my absolute favourites. I was very determined to break the world record. And yes it's best to not miss too much or you're doomed :) Timing is everything...
Jelle147 2 years ago
Oh, forgot: what's your highest then?
Unfortunately only 1 other person (Hugo) in the last 4 yrs has been seriously playing to get a top score in Galaxian (in MAME that is). Hey TC, ~Aart
Jelle147 2 years ago
good quick fast gameplay...you play it exactly the same as me..Make every shot count and get the 800 whenever possible...Excellent...:) After level 15 the game just loops so you can play as long as you want really...Ive been up to level 42 with 4 lives left it took me an hour then my fingers were hurting so just quit.. Great game...:)
AMikeOnLine 2 years ago
Well thx for the compliment Mike.
Jelle147 2 years ago
Your welcome fellow galaxian..I play the original NAMCO version from 1980...Its a screen on a table, i think its called The cocktail version where you sit down to the table...I was the best in england up until the arcade shut down..My best score was 45 levels and a score of 167k then they had to pull the plug as it was closing time.! And they were annoyed that it only cost me 10 pennys for hours of gaming..!Yeh sure ill do a vid for you...:) Watch this space.
AMikeOnLine 2 years ago 2
Shame, otherwise you would have seen that after 48 flags you have to count yourself.Played this game as a kid when it first came out .Played in all video-halls,high score 396820 but me mate had 426000!Was thrown out once when close to a local record..
alpbt 2 years ago
@AMikeOnLine

In the early levels make sure you only shoot them as they are coming down it's easy during those levels and you get way more points.
sharperguy 2 years ago
Yes you get twice the points value when shooting aliens in attack mode, that's correct (except the yellow flagship which has 5 possible values). So thx for the tip, but once you're able to reach level 300 or 450, it really is of no concern whether you got 10,000 points after level 3, or 11,500. :P

ur pretty good! i play this game on my nintendo 64. this is better than galaga cuz its harder. u can only shoot 1 missle at a time, ur ship is slower, and its easier to miss
mattador2792 2 years ago
On the N64? You too?
Yeah I like this better than Galaga now.
CrazyEnzo03 2 years ago
As a side note, even though I haven't even beaten the score in this video, I hold almost all the Galaxian hi-scores in my town because nobody here is any good at it! =]
Same with Galaga, but I quit the machine last mentioned because I was playing for too long and the place was shutting down for the night lol.
CrazyEnzo03 2 years ago
I used to love playing galaxians, i revisit this game on mame occasionaly, but get bored after a few level. I think this was the first ever color video game. Space invaders originally used colored cellophane to create the illusion of color.
