  • For someone who has personally tried killing himself (I tried overdosing on pills) I can honestly say this is an absolutely beautiful song. It presents the same emotion and sadness as a suicidal person feels. It's such a beautiful song....

  • Billy said that after he recovered, he checked in to a mental hospital. But after a few days, he told the staff. "I'm OK. Really. These other people here are CRAZY, but I'm OK!"

  • I feel like the orchestra fights the emotion of the song, although that might just be me.

  • this is just such a perfect song !!!!

  • @madlutist If you have a USB Turntable, a copy of Cold Spring Harbor on Vinyl, and Audacity, you can fix the audio of the original album to the correct speed.

  • This is amazing... just amazing..

  • This album (his 1st) was recorded at the wrong speed. Short story, he was broke with no recourse. So he moved to California and began playing Piano Bars under the name of Bill Martin.

  • Awesome

  • Everytime I hear this I cry. No song has ever touched me like this one.

  • The pitch is lowered in this video. Hm.

Interesting song, though. Taken from the text of a suicide note he wrote when he tried to kill himself.

  • This version sounds more natural.

  • Man Billy would say that Artie Ripp and his crew were some rotten people but i didnt really understand why i mean it was an accident is was sped up but when i read he rereleased it in 83 to keep getting royalties and take advantage of billys genius i tottaly agreed that that is a foul person

  • Lo mejor es a partir del 3:14

  • Lo mejor es a partir del 3:14 y 4:05 y sin duda 4:30

  • No, no, no. I know you spent some time on this, but why? There are bass and drums in that radio show from '72, and even then it was disappointing because the song has to be Billy and the piano - that's it. Get on to the real composing in your soul.

  • i think both versions are good

  • I think this version has too much going on. Who has an orchestra when they're killing themselves, it's a solitary thing. Those string flourishes are fucking crazy!

  • Given the song's content, I prefer the stripped down version. This version is good too. Reminds me a Jim Steinman song with the orchestra (think Meat Loaf, Bonnie Tyler, etc.). This is a good thing, by the way.

  • I really think it's unnecessary that the 1983 version stripped the instruments away. They could have mastered it at the correct speed with the instruments intact.

  • LOL.. Morons.. This version is slowed down.. The one that you think is sped up is the original..

  • The words to this song were part of a suicide note that Joel wrote, before he tried to kill himself drinking furniture polish.

Artie Ripp was the record producer who mastered the album at the incorrect speed. The original version sounds like Joel is singing on helium.

  • I have it on tape somewhere. It was like, "How young WAS he?"

  • He was 22 years old when it was released in 1971.

  • mmmmm, furniture polish..... tastes like coffee

  • @bobbypinhead he actually said he drank it because it tasted better than bleach!

  • So this is the 1971 version first released? With the supposed recording error where it was one-half-step higher than it was supposed to be? And the plainer version is off of the 1980 re-release?

It's kind of confusing the way you worded the description. "Added" orchestrations makes it seem like they were supposed to come later.

  • Where can i get a copy of this version? i love it

  • where did you get this version! i freaking love this song and have never heard it like this before!

  • Where was the orchestra version released?

  • It is only on the original vinyl version. The re-released CD removed it, likely because of poor master quality. You'll need to find an orignal album because it was out of print for years - try ebay.

  • It wasn't really poor master quality, it's just the producer wanted to make more money off of Billy Joel after he broke from his record company.

  • the way he sings this perfectly demonstrates his feelings. Its bitter, its cynical, and its hopeless. and it sounds really good. this song comes purely from himself unlike today's music where all of it is "fake" generic, and just bad.

  • @username102793 I imagine the reason why it "comes purely from himself" is because the lyrics were from his suicide note when he attempted suicide by drinking furniture polish.

  • @TheTrueKS When Billy was recovering at hospital, the band mate who found him passed out on the floor asked Billy if he wanted to see the note he left. Embarrassed, Billy said "ummm...OK" After reading his suicide note, Billy smiled and said "Hey, I think there's a song here".

  • You can tell he set the song up to climax at certain points that didn't show up because the orchestra was removed.

  • this song.... rocks.... its so true! thx

  • As for this orchestral version, I received a strong impact over 25 years before. This version is the most favorite song in all "masterpieces" of his excellent works, and I absolutely love this version.

I've just listened this version, and just remembered that I despaired of everything in those days as same as his feelings. And now, my tears unconsciously appeared... I'm very glad, very sad, and very vain by listening to this orchestral version.

Mr. petebj123, thank you so much, thank you...
