He could, but he runs the risk of being hit very hard in the process. As soon as the fencer on the right seizes the initiative it is up to the fencer on the left to defend himself. If he could do this while hitting his opponent, then that would be great, but that's at least not how this particular play is described.
You know you guys all your videos are very high quality in how you add music, have good camera angles, appropriate text vignettes, and such. With a little work you could do this professionally and make instructional videos. You're just a few steps away. Think of how quality proliferation of this knowledge could help spread the art!
playing well now - and another great vid. for my 2 cents worth (could be all they're worth) I think staff play is of necessity 'harder' than this (being an impact weapon). This sometimes looks mechanically weak. For example, the 1 handed swing at 41s looks like a small tap from your opponent could take it out of your hand. Should you also be stepping laterally there? How could we perform this in a less vulnerable way? But again, good work, and kudos for putting this up.
Good work chaps. I really love your presentation style. The imagery from the texts, the music, it all helps capture a little of the zeitgeist involved if you know what I mean. BTW, Meyer's staff really shines when you introduce longer staves (say, 8 foot long) - extremely powerful.
Thank you very much! I can definitely see Meyer working very well with 8 foot staves. We only use the 6 footers here because they still work for Meyer, and we can also use them for Mair who favors a shorter staff. Take care!
WOW! Keep the vids coming. I just got that newly published transcript of PHM's polearm plates and have been going crazy tring to understand most of it. Watching your interpretation of Mair is great! But I still feel like his whole take on the art is a little strange.
Thanks! We're working from the same book. Mair really is tricky; my advise is to just do exactly what he says to do and nothing else. The hard part of course is trying to figure out what he means for you to do!

Sinners & Saints: The Ultimate Medieval and Renaissance Music Collection. Don't recall what song this one is, exactly.
I'm not affiliated with MEMAG, but I own the CD and that is what they are using in other videos.

When the fencer on the right attempts to swing the staff around, why does the one on the left not strike before it comes around?

It's interestingly close to longsword techniques, with a few additions to take advantage of the longer reach and compensate for the lack of an edge.
