Sounds like Nature Boy. This guys body of work is many pages long. He played on everything from Bonanza to The Godfather, and countless records. His book...A Dairy of a Studio Musician is a must read for any aspiring studio player or producer.
I attended MI in 87 and remember Tommy speaking on the main stage. He was the warmest soul and had a great sense of humor. He told us that there were only a handful of studio guitar players when he was working. Calls would go out looking for different styles. He would always accept no matter what it was. When a call went out for a Banjo player.all the other guitar players declined, He accepted, not even owning a banjo. He borrowed one and tuned it like a guitar and faked it. Like a pro
Ive always loved Tommy. He even looks like my first guitar instructor I had in the mid 1960's...Denny, I wanna see this film~ Ive been reading about it for the past couple years, but where???
I"m having fund raisers around the country to pay off the licensing. Its hard to release a documentary with so much music in it. So I've had to do it this way. Go to the website and look at the screenings coming up or go to the facebook page. Sign in and check out the outtakes. See you soon
I used to read Tommys articles in Guitar Player as a boy, it was always fascinating to me hearing the stories of various different sessions and how he approached things, its quite moving watching this.
The first song is "Nature Boy" made famous by Nat King Cole and it is(was) frequently played as an instrumental by jazz guitarists. Then a malaguena-ish chord progession that he is playing freely. Hmmm, I can't figure what the 3rd piece is. At first I thought it was "All the Things You Are", then I thought it was "Invitation"
is he improvising or is this a composition, or is he kind of improvising over a composition? either way, this performance was brilliant. also if this is a prepared piece who wrote it?
Ever since I got his video I've been a big Tommy Tedesco fan. He did a guitar clinic at a local music store, and I was out of town. I found out about it when I got back, and am so sorry I missed it. I play guitar for a living, and Tommy was a real inspiration to me. May he rest in peace.
This brings back so many memories. I attended the Musician's Institute in 1985 and saw many of Mr. Tedesco's enlightening seminars, as well as having the honor of accompanying him to a session in LA (something he regularly did for his students). He was a wonderful man whose memory always brings a smile to my face.
Thanks for posting this Denny! I was lucky enough to attend one of your father's seminars here in San Diego in the late '70's and not only was he an amazing guitarist but he was so funny too, he had us rolling with all of his stories! I'd always watch Fernwood Tonight to see him shredding in the background and couldn't wait for his monthly column in Guitar Player. I don't suppose you could put up my personal favorite song of his from When do we Start?, Denny T's Mantra :)
My dad and Tommy went to school together. They were very good friends until Tommy passed away. My dad was a great drummer too.
