Look up Greek Fire. It's kind of a Roman invention but more accurately a Byzantine invention.

look up chinease flame thorwer its the oldeest one that has nonstop flame with a double valve piston they make it on re-inventors its so sweet shoot like 10 feet but think about it having 20 of them running up to people with nothing more then bows and later on muskets
