Food on the other hand is expensive, you can't just buy it once, you need to buy a fair amount of food each week... thats quite a lot of dollar.

If you are seriously saying having a computer means that this guy is lying when he says he cannot afford to eat properly, then you've clearly never been poor. Do no poor people own mobile phones either?
