i just hate hydrolics brakes since i had to change pads on my juicy3, the pistons were too close togheter so i had to push them apart (advice from pinkbike forum) this broke the diaphragm so i would have to empty the brake, buy & install new diaphragm and rebleed the brake, im not rich godamnit, and what a pain in the a*s!! now im pissed cuz it would be less expensive to get some brand new BB5 but id be stuck with brand new juicy3 pads!!!
i have a hydraulic disc brake and when i break almost nothing happens. I filled it full with oil but still dosen really break hard but is better. Any reasons why help plz?
I have just bled my brakes, so i went to test them, before i got on it, i spun the wheel nd braked, everything was ok, so i got on it and then braked few times but then suddenly the brake pads are braking on the rotors, they didnt let go with the rotor and the lever is now impossible to be pressed, can anyone help? Sorry if it doesnt make sence :D
awesome! this is essentially the same thing as the manual inside the bleed kit but having a video as well as reading it was very helpful to have. I really appreciated this video and found that the factory bleed left the lines with a lot of bubbles inside it. My friend and I doing it together really benefited the performance of my brakes.
@lidarman2 Throw out the old fluid, the fluid absorbs moisture in the air. Any moisture in the fluid will dramatically lower the boiling point and make the fluid more corrosive.
@Gromitdog1 Oh yeah, it's hygroscopic....But that has nothing really to do with the brown stuff. .but unfortunately this also means any new fluid left in the original container will also absorb water and go bad since it was exposed to air. How many people keep their bleed kit fluid in a vacuum or with desiccant?
I am lucky to have a 2010 S-works stumpy with the Avid XX specials. The front is travelling almost all the way back to the handle - still powerful. the owners manual didn't include anything about the brakes and the dealers are a long way away so I need to work out if it is an adjustment of the contact point or I need to bleed the brake. Where do I find the adjustment details for contact point for XX brakes? Thanks AndrewE
I use transmission clutch fluid from a CH -47 Chinook helicopter in my disc brakes. It has a super high OPTEMP rating and does not eat away at seals. It also does not collect water from the atmosphere, is high in detergent, and has exact same viscosity as DOT 5 series.
3. Use the Juicy bleed block without the pads in. No risk of contamination of pads. If this fits then you know your pistons are as far back as they should be (see tip 2)
4. When putting new pads in don't do as they say in the video and pre grab your levers on the pad spacer. I found this made the pads rub on the rotor. Instead: push the pad spacer into the pads when the pistons are fully back. This pushes the pads properly in place. Then put your wheel on and adjust your brakes as Avid suggest.
1. Detach turn the caliper round for easier access
2. if your pistons don't go all the way back in (flat to caliper body) when pushing them back in push them in again when bleeding the caliper. This will force them back and force out the hidden buubbes that are stopping them move all the way back. This in turn will have been making you swear when trying to get your new blocks in as they don't fit ( i have been swearing for a while...)
Great Video. Helped a lot. I finally now have full power non rotor rubbing brakes! No motor hanging on and hoping for the best down the steep gnarly descents on my Specialized Epic with Juicy 5s.
would this work with avid juicy 3.5 and avid code 5 , and will it refill the the hose becuase i leaked ( my fault) and im low on fluid so m ybrake isnt responsive
need help.. my brake is avid juicy three, and the brake (where the piston, clutch, etc is inside) had a little split in the middle.. how would u fix it? should i use sealant?
In Code bleeding manual says bleed hose first, caliper, lever. In the Elixir manual and in this video you say caliper first, then hose and lever. Which order is the best?
Great video Thanks a lot. I am having an issue though. i cant get fluid to move from the caliper syringe to the lever syringe. I am assuming that the lever cylinder is completely sludged up. Do you have a video for disassembling the master to clean out the sludge. On my other brake, i got the fluid to move from syringe to lever. Wow, the fluid was dark black. When i put everything back together the levr is still squishy as hell. Any ideas why? Thanks for ur time andhelp

Awesome ! Great, easy to understand vid. Just sorted my brakes out after accidentally loosing brake fluid. I have never done anything like this before and got it right 1st time (although i did it twice as i had to replace fluid). Thank you very much.
I did use DOT 4 though and it works absolutely fine.
Any reason for using DOT 5.1? The stuff is awful in every way apart from it's temperature properties (corrodes piping, highly hygroscopic etc). I wouldn't put it near my car braking system.
Is there any specific reason why I couldn't use a synthetic DOT4?
I use a racing synthetic DOT4 in my car brakes and they go upto 600ºC so I can't see why I can't use it here???
@SRAMtech in the beginning you say that bleeding is removing air from the system. so aside from collecting air bubbles does the fluid itself ever actually break down/get dirty?
Can anyone tell me why the Avid bleeding manual tells you to go in the order of: hose, caliper, lever, while this video tells you to go caliper, hose, lever?
You can get most of the air out using nothing more sophiticated than good old gravity. First level off the BMC on the brake lever. Take the lid off the BMC and gently tap the caliper and tube to shift any air to the top. Gently squeezing the brake lever will work most of the bubbles out into the BMC reservoir, where they can left to rise to the surface. Top up the BMC with new fluid, refit the lid and catch the fluid that is squeezed out with a cloth. Wash down & jobs a good'un!
The main point of the full bleed is to remove dissolved gas (air) from the system. You can't see the gas normally, because it's not under negative pressure.
Hurt's video here is extremely useful & reading the PDF is also highly useful.

@holubrider man... I had a mechanics class in my school last year... we usually bled car brakes... believe me, it is not that nice when that shit will drip on your skin... it feels like lots of tiny scratches =//...
They are a lot powerfull than mechanical brakes ,dirt on the cables isn't an issue (because they don't have cables) and they self center to the rotor so you have fewer chances to bend the disc. Also, often times hydros are more precise than mechs, in other words they have more modulation, and if you get the high end carbon lever/master cylinder ones they are also lighter. Sorry for the bad english, and I hope that this helped you.
What is the order of steps when bleeding an Elixir CR? This video says to first bleed the caliper, then the hose, finally the lever (which makes sense to me). However, the elixir manual I've downloaded ad pdf says to first bleed the hose, then the caliper and finally the lever.
Great video, I watched it like 10 times, and I'm planning to buy it on blue ray once it comes out :) Don't forget to download the latest manual from srams website for the most up to date instructions.
Thx a lot for this very good instruction. It's much better than the manual. I bled my Juicy 5 today and it went very well. i'm from Germany. Next time it would be fine, if you could add the tourque also in Nm, the unit of measurement for the rest of the world ;-).
Two questions:
1. Why haven't you done a video for Root 2 brakes?
2. If gases rise, how come we don't need to do headstands to fart?
