I got to dark Link with 0 guys left on my first try. I died, and was SOOOOOO mad when I saw I had to start back at the beginning of the Place (that place was a freaking maze!!!). That was 1988. I wouldn't play it again until 1998, and with the help of Game Genie, finished it with all 3 guys (I used the infinite guy code obviously). I do know a guy who set his on fire because of how hard this game was. He burned that cartridge to a crisp! It popped, sizzled, and whined while it burned.

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link was my very first Nintendo game my parents bought for me when I was 8 years old. Man, it took forever to beat this game and was really hard, but I still have fond memories of playing it.

In some ways Zelda II was an excellent game, and it's too bad Nintendo never made another Zelda in this fashion.

I really don't remember. My strategy was to not replace the crystals in any palace until I had already leveled up to 8 for all three stats (life, magic, attack). So replacing each of the palace crystals, finding all of the Link dolls, and those times that I got 9000 experience points in the process of playing the game after leveling up all gave me an extra man each. Then of course, I started with three.

Most of my deaths actually came from this last palace, but I never went to zero lives.

I basically did 3 things: (1) I collected every Link doll available, which gives you an extra man each. (2) I built up all my levels to level 8 for life, magic, and attack before I ever finished the 1st dungeon. I did this by just going through the 1st dungeon over and over again without putting the crystal into the statue. Doing that means that when I'd finish any of the dungeons, the experience boost would give me an extra man each time. (3) I was very careful and died very few times.

Because in the storyline (mentioned in the manual, but poorly translated), Ganon's minions are trying to resurrect him. They need Link's blood to do it. So if you die, they have it and Ganon returns.

But Ganon is not the focus of the story. The focus of the story is to rescue the original Princess Zelda, put to sleep thousands of years ago, by finding the Triforce of Courage to complete the original Triforce. Ganon had nothing to do with that.

That would be incorrect according to the manual. Zelda is the first in the line of Pricess Zeldas in this game. After she was put to sleep by the wizard, the tradition started of naming each princess after her.

It's called the Thunderbird. It's the actual guardian of this temple, sort of like the other final bosses were the guardians of their respective temples. It is like the king of all of the fierce bird-like warriors you see in this temple.

Shadow Link is not really strictly associated with this temple. He is more of a "rite of passage". In order to get the Triforce of Courage, Link effectively has to face himself.
