  • Stu Hamm is 10x the bassist!

  • @kc8ntp they are both beasts shut the hell up

  • @Raffael900me How many years have you played bass? I have played bass (plus, guitar, piano, drums, and several stringed instruments) for over 25-years, so I am more than entitled to a critical opinion. This bass solo is nothing special -- it is just a bunch of digital sound effects, which anybody that can play a fretless at all could do!

  • JOE SATRIANI

  • I hate to ask this, but what is the melody he is playing in the middle part of the solo when he's on the looper? Its lovely and I know I've heard it before, but can't think of where or who wrote it.

  • @keithdolge truly don't know :((

  • THIS VIDEO MADE ME A MAN

  • Great performance, that's how i think a fretless bass should sound.

  • Sweet!

  • This cat is a great player and versatile also. I heard him with Boz Scaggs and he played at least 4 different styles and nailed all of them. His solo was good not great but I wouldn' t bring Jaco up in comparison just because he did the digital delay stuff.

  • When he started up, the two bass players in the crowd cheered....

  • @voncoolio how so?

  • @voncoolio how so?

  • @voncoolio What's a true bass player?

  • @TaterGumfries I apologise for leaving a comment containing inspecific jargon (no such thing as a true bassist), and i'll give the reason I dislike this solo.

This is nothing but an imitation of jaco's style, and a shabby one at that. Slap on fretless fails; distortion on fretless fails. You gotta understand that fretless bass is one of the most sensitive instruments up there with the violin, cello and upright; to play it you need taste. This is only my opinion.

  • @voncoolio Like other innovators, Jaco changed the way people approach the instrument. Fretless bass players can't help but incorporate elements of Jaco's playing, even if they never heard him, because so many other fretless players have incorporated Jaco's ideas.

  • @voncoolio

    >> Slap on fretless fails <<

    Unless you're Pino Palladino...

  • Hello Jaco

  • His brother Gregg is totally sick on drums. I got a chance to catch David Lee Roth's Skyscraper tour with both of them playing along with Steve Vai and Brett Tuggle (keyboards) one helluva show.

  • Fretless basses aren't meant to sound like a fretted bass. The beauty of the instrument is in the obscurity. It's not what your used to hearing. Those little tones trills and out pitches are what make it what it is. Of course you could tab it out. The players are still playin in defined keys, no one is going to play in a perfect b harmonic minor one quarter tone down, but all those little slides and accents are up to the interpreter to nail down. When was the last time you read a 100% right tab?

  • fuck tabs

  • @polishpirate123

Sit down, listen and play along.....like we did in the old days when there was no internet ;-)

  • @jimmyaka Can't remember ever seeing a 75% right tab, especially on Bassmasta. I swear people are deaf.

One good thing, though - I left the tabs in the dust and started to play by key then by feel and then groove.

    Tabs fail.

  • This is the stupidest fucking conversation I have ever read! YOU TAB IT LIKE A FRETTED BASS! The whole technique behind playing a fretless instrument is playing it in tune (meaning ON the fret line) everything else is just sliding (which is done and tabulated on fretted instruments) and imperfections due to the fact its impossible to play perfectly in pitch. Fretted basses are never perfectly in tune so how the hell would you tab one of those?! Vibratos are played on fretted basses.

  • tab is a restricted resource that was created to make easy the process of learning music but can be used just in guitar and bass thats why u cant tab a trumpet

  • you'd prolly have to split it al into fractional frets or somthing idk.. it would be weird for sure though lol

  • how would u tab a fretless bass?

  • The same way you tap a fretted one.

  • 98 percent of the notes arnt on a specific fret though so it wouldnt really be acurate. i guess it would just have to be good enough to give an idea of what to do

  • You don't need a "fret" to tap and play harmonics.

  • . . . i said tab not tap. like tableture lol. i use harmonics all the time thats not what i meant

  • @iwannacapo How would you tab a trumpet?

  • i wouldnt know i've neverplayed trupet.

maybe a line for each key and then a number for how far u press it down? idk lol

  • @iwannacapo

the same way you'd tab a normal bass?

  • but the frets are gone and most of the notes your hitting arnt on specific frets so how would u get across where u actually need to hit it? i guess you could do it like a normal bass and let the person guess as to where exactly but idk. dont guess it matters

  • the notes your hitting are on specific frets...otherwise you would be out of tune with the rest of the band, who obviously arent playing fretless. at the end of the day you need to reproduce the same pitch as you would on a fretted, so as long as your playing where the fret WOULD be, you'll get the right note. meaning you would tab it for a fretted and let the player interpret where they want to slide etc

  • this guy is playing solo he doesn't have to be in tune. and if you we're supposed to play where frets would be only what would be the point in a fretless bass besides the sliding? besides personal preference. alot of fretless bassists play it more like a violen with alot of tremelo with the fingers. then again i guess u could just put tremelo for those notes in the tab.. idk

  • This is one of the most musical bass solos I've ever heard!! Many are technically amazing but not more than chopsfests. This is real composition & melody! Thanks for this!!!

  • Hard to beleive this is the same guy from the Skyscraper Tour.

  • I got to see him play with David Lee Roth on the Skyscraper tour...1987-1988? He had just replaced Billy Sheehan. Not as flashy as Billy, but never missed a note either...very,very solid.

  • This guy credits go from jazz to rock. I have known him since 1982. He asked me run sound for a band he had in New York. I should have gone!

  • lakland basses rule !

  • Everyone knew you would be successful...they were right!!!

    April

  • I enjoyed it very much. Is this the same guy who played bass with Eric Johnson on the Austin City Limits video?

  • good stuff. I went to schoo with him and gregg.

  • It's not bad - the stuff before he starts slapping is a little weak. Good use of the sampler pedal though.

  • you think Jaco was an influence?

  • Seems like it.

  • specially nearning the end

  • Hey Matt it's bagger!

  • Isn't that just one of the most beautiful sounds on the planet.

Fretless basses just have a sound of their own.

  • @maninahole how would you describe the main differences in sound, im thinking about getting a fretless but i was told its not ideal for rock, how do you feel about this

  • @docBOSS1444 To go fretless probably means your playing a more harmonic piece of music, something slow with a casual drum beat in the back. Maybe with a few synths. You can use fretless bass for hard rock but i don't think it would have the same inpact as a normal fretted bass. Best if you could have both and switch between the two using the Boss FS-5U pedal for live performances. I truly love the sound of fretless basses. you could hear alot of it in the 80's. listen to 'Japan' :)

  • @docBOSS1444 com/watch?v=WhC8LnFd2LE&feature=related I was born in 89. I'm not an oldie. i just appreciate all music :)

  • Matt is an very talented songwriter and singer as well.

  • so good.

I didnt know joe biden played bass...

  • the harmonic slide is actually very easy you just hit your harmonic and quickly press down onto the fretboard and slide away! hey fretless efficianados check out tommy sims fretless work he played a lot in the 80s and 90s in the christian market ,man that guy is an artist he played with margret becker m.w. smith charlie peacock and more pino palladino was amazing on most of the fretless hit you hear on the radio

  • I came

  • Nice one! I though Matt B was just a stand-in deeply average bassist helping out his bro after Sheehan departed DLR, but I'm pleased to be proved wrong. Lovely playing and good use of the loops. Haven't seen a slid harmonic on a fretless since my cousin showed me how to do it 20-odd years ago! Good post.

  • I actually passed up seeing Satriani in the late 90's cause Stu Hamm was replaced on the tour by Matt B, who I thought as well to be deeply average. I was greatly mistaken. This is by far, one of the coolest fretless solos I've seen!!

  • That solo is great. Has anyone checked out Micheal Manring? Very cool stuff, he uses alternate tunings and changes them mid solo!

    Great fretless player

  • lol... everyone know his son josh??? Well he is like one of my good friends!!!

  • dam how does he do that harmonic slide?!

  • well, you can hit the natural harmonic then press the note and slide after pressing it.

also, you can press the note, then hit the artificial harmonic, then slide.

i prefer artificial harmonic over natural if you are going to slide it.

to learn how to do it chek "steve bailey"

    hope it helps

  • Voncoolio, you're pathetic! You're like a little boy saying "My dad's bigger than your dad!" Music is an art form, not a sport's competition! It would be like arguing that , in the world of painting, realists are "better" than abstract artists. Get a clue. Both have an audience of followers that are moved by what they do. It isn't a freaking competition. You're arguments demonstrate how much you are wrapped up in your own petty ego. If you don't like a particular musician, don't listen to them.

  • this dudes right ^^^

  • Looks like his brother...both extraordinarily talented individuals! :)

  • Agreed, jlebesis. I've been a fan of Matt and Gregg (and the Wackerman's too) from the time they played with Ferguson (who had a LOT of great young players develop in his band.) It seems like all four of them have held a lot of the same gigs at various times over the years. Given the different styles they've covered, those who think of Matt as having one style probably haven't been listening enough.

  • how can you play bass and not imitate Jaco Pastorius? he did everything, he was like the Jimi Hendrix of bass guitar

  • I think you are just one of those momys boy that find evrey thing that you cant do shit

  • jaco pastorius was with no doubth the father from real fretles play but with all the things that he did some other bass players evolved to be better bassists dont get me wrong no one could have done it with out him but he was and is not evrey thing;you should check people like MIROSLAV VITEU,MANFRED MANRING,BUNNY BRUNER,JIMMY JOHNSON,TONY FRANKLIN,JONAS HELLBORG,GARY WILLIS. just to name a cuple, wen you are so closed to just jaco,I think you think way to much from him,he just made the style..

  • great solo

  • Love this solo. Matt Rules!

  • asshole

  • Your comment is correct but Victor Wooten is also crap. Don't check him out!

  • I was very pleasantly surprised by how good this was

  • I dunno for sure what he might be quoting earlier in the video, it does sound familiar, but I can't place it, but he's definitely giving props to Jaco around 2:30, the looping, the phrasing, definitely a nod to the late master.

  • I agree! The fingerstyle-part and the loop effect are pretty cool...

But slapping a fretless bass is like slapping yo mama´s face.

    That´s it.

  • i dont like the slap part...it sounded really bad cuz we cant slap a fretless bass,,but this man is nice ..not so wow,,but groovy

  • who's we? i can slap just fine on a fretless. it's actually not good to slap on a fretted because it wears the frets very fast. on a fretless the wood compresses a bit and that's it. it doesn't have the exact same tone, less treble clarity for the attack, but if you set your levels and eq you can get very near a typical fretted slap sound. besides, it's all the hands, right?

  • well if it's gonna sound like this solo,,,i'd rather never slap on a fretless ..and i dont care if i spend all my savings buying frets just to get the authentic slappy sound....but u can slap on a wheel chair if u want to,,and adjust ur eq .

  • Assuming you like fretless slap's tone, which I despise, slapping (and playing on fretless in general) can "carve" the top a bit, and that'll reshape the fingerboard slightly, but enough where you start fretting out/getting dead or wolf notes.

  • never had that problem on any of my 3 fretless basses. there's a tiny bit of compression in the fingerboards (one ebony, one ebony with epoxy, one pao ferro) but it's never affected the sound. and once again i'll say- IT'S ALL IN THE HANDS.

  • Dude, ebony, epoxied ebony, and pau ferro are much, much harder than the "industry standard" rosewood. It is all in the hands, but any and all hands will damage rosewood.

  • had a MIM fender jazz fretless for six years, played it about 3 hours a day for the better part of three years, never a problem.

perhaps i play softer than other people? ;)

  • Is he quoting anything in particular during that looping part starting at :54? It's quite beautiful, even if his intonation is... off.

  • hes got a loopstation

bet it the 'BOSS XL 50' too

  • p.s i love it at 1:49 onwards when he does that harmonic sliding thing

  • This guy graduated from my high school. Good stuff!

  • Dinamiche inesistenti. Il tocco potrebbe essere di gran lunga migliore. Vuole copiare Pastorius ma siamo molto lontani..

  • cool

  • tasty

  • Very Good Matt is a great bass player

  • matt rules.

  • Very nice and tasteful.
