what i did was hold your thigh closer to your chest, perpendicular to your the other thigh. Make sure your upper body is straight and not making an angle. This is to ensure you can hold your leg high and nice.
Do it say 5 minutes per day then you should be able to see the result. Then sretch out your leg and hold it there as 2nd level of training.

What's an effective way of improving your side kick? Such as an exercise, at the moment I just do them very slowly.

You can also "press kicks".
Hold on to something, do put the foot out as in a kick, and then slowly count to five.
Retract the foot to the knee and repeat.
10 times is usually enough.

i like to hold my leg out for 2-3 mins at a time in a side kick and front kick fashion.. it hurts
