I remember going several times to see Mike Furber at a club, downstairs, in Castlereagh Street, Sydney when I was 16. Loved him. Still have his album (LP) in my collection at home.
all i need now before i die is music videos of ray brown and the whispers "fool fool fool" and tony a barber "someday" i am quite sick guys and i live most of my days on you tube listening to songs like this- my sister use to date dick diamond of the easybeats he was living in east fremantle here in perth western australia and i have met personally mpd ltd. any help would be accepted. cheers
Looks like an ABC Australia Production. Mike made his TV debut on the ATVO/10 show ( Now 10 Network) Kommotion hosted by Ken Sparkes and this is not from that show. The girls adored Mike and his sad early passing was Australias loss
In fact it is from Episode 97 of Go!! hosted by Ian Turpie, not half as good looking as Ken Sparkes, however he was dating Olivia Newton-John at the time. Mike also appeared twice on Brian Henderson's Bandstand in 1969 and footage exists of Mike on Club 7 teen hosted by Johnny Young on Perth Television, before John took over the hosting of Go!! when Turps vacated the chair to join Terry O'Neill on Channel 7's "Time For Terry"
Good one glad to see someone is on the ball and keeping tabs on our history which has in many areas been ignored and given away as land fill by some media folks who did not care.
You know so much about the music at that time. Perhaps you could clear up confusion for me. Do you know if Mike Furber played at the easter show around the mid 60's? I remember seeing a band there and couldn't remember whether it was Normie Rowe, the Easybeats or Mike Furber.
I vaguely recall hearing The Mockingbirds version on some LP with various artists on it. I, too, think this version by Mike Furber and The Bowery Boys is better. Do any videos show the group as well? They sound good. Maybe it was a similar situation as with Billy J. Kramer; The Dakotas were pushed into the background.
Your right their manager Ivan Dayman, who also managed Normie Rowe wanted to push Mike as a solo and ruined their careers, The Bowery Boys actually wrote the first single "Just A Poor Boy which was also excellent.
Nowhere near as good as the original recording by The Mockingbirds

Wasn't this written by Graham Gouldman?
moorlock2003 3 years ago
Yes , the song was written by Graham when he was in the Mockingbird's (pre Mindbenders).
Personally prefer Mike's version over the Mockingbird's effort.

To my knowledge no vision of Mike with the Bowery Boys exist. The best hope would be Queensland TV stations.

That seems a bit odd, as groups were all the rage. But managers have a way of messing things up.
