@jgroove87 Yamaha 3305, but custom made just for Poland. Other guitars will break by his awesome phrasing but I think we all understand that by now :D
If I could pay ten grand out and have his exact setup and tone, I would not hesitate! It still amazes me how many people haven't had time to sit and appreciate Chris' playing style, he is just impossible to replicate even without his exact tone. Such an over-looked guitarist...
Ive never heard a guitar solo sound like his... what is it that makes his solo sounds so unique? its alsmot sounds like a synth or some shit... what a genius...
Kirk is a great melodic blues player! Chris comes from a jazz-fusion background! Watch Chris's gear video the tone is Allan Holdsworth meets Michael Schenker! Comparing such vastly different guitar players just doesn't make sense!
I wish people would stop comparing Kirk to Megadeth guitarists, hes not even in the same league. Metallica literally got him for the sake of having a guitarist. Mustaine is the power.
Mustaine was once asked in an interview if there was any guitar player he thought he could have learned something from. He said yes, but unfortunately his ego kept him from asking Poland for some guitar pointers. That's high praise from Mustaine. Poland is a mutant player, no one is like him. Peace.
@allrapsucks Really? that is awesome I'd love to read more about that, I have some guitar tracks of him on peace sells like black friday and his tone on those are just amazing, he was a legend then and now he is a legacy.
@zzzhuh Yes, Mustaine said that in a Guitar World interview I read many years ago. I wish I could tell you what issue, but certainly it must be archived. Mustaine and Poland together - they were completely lethal.
They've had a lot of great leads (Megadeth) but this guy played with the most soul out of any of Mustains lead players. The others are speedier and more machine like but this guy added color to Dave.
@Tarkess Broderick is alright but Poland's style is way more unique and his fills on stuff like these boots, rattlehead, black friday are just insane. I actually have the black friday guitar track on my profile go check it out and enjoy how clean he is as a player even in the old days.

@zzzhuh Oh I like Poland better, but I still think that Chris is the more talented player in terms of playing. I can't say anything about writing or originality, but Chris can play damn near anything.
@Tarkess Eh I don't like his live performances of peace sells or anything. I realize that it is hard to give the same sound that the original did but Poland has done solo albums that were beyond great. I do like Broderick however and I'll accept him for Megadeth material ha.
@zzzhuh I still think it's kind of hard to compare seeing as how Broderick hasn't written anything of his own yet (at least not that has been released), but from the live stuff I've seen, he nails pretty much all their songs perfectly.
out of the 3, marty chris and chris p. marty is my favorite. but broderick is too technicall, and he doesnt play from the heart, he just goes out and shreds. im not saying he isnt good. he really is, but he needs to write creative solos.. listen to rust in peice.... then listen to endgame.. huge difference. and chris p is phenomonal also, him and marty are very good... should be about as popular as zakk wylde or synister gates but they arent.. which is a drag
He is using the pentatonic scale in his phrase but the melodies of the shredding he pulls out of that scale are just too various with different mood. It is just like making a countless amount of the different tasty foods with the simple ingredients.
and I've been saying this since 2004, everyone thought he was god back then. that was before youtube. that was when metallica albums sold like hotcakes regardless of quality. their last good album was master of puppets.
kirk sucks as a lead guitarist; the scales he uses are cool but his phrasing is horrible, his timing is shit and the sound is choppy. Even Dave Mustaine was a better lead - checkout his solos on Wake Up Dead in Megadeth's Peace Sell's album
@PrepsAndEmosSuck Please... dont mention Kirk in the same sentence as the word "vibrato"...thats like including the word "sex" with the name Janet Napolitano
@PrepsAndEmosSuck why would you even compair chris poland to kirk? that disrespectful to chris poland. hes wayyyyyyyyyy far beyond anything kirk hammett has ever done.
@PrepsAndEmosSuck kirk doesn't have vibrato, he's got a tremelo bar. guitarists that actually practice and make an active attempt to get better should never be compared to kirk.
wowww Chris's phrasing in Ohm is the best i've heard him play & i saw Megadeth plenty in the 80's & he liked to play fast exotic solo's with multiple bends but he has become such an inovator of his own style;)
Christ man, his paying is amongst the smoothest ive ever heard, his guitar fucking SINGS. Its SO classically influenced, WOW! Im so glad you pulled out of the heroin chris. Im still struggling however. I gotta ask; why didn't you guys just go on methadone?
@moonsault2506123 well, probably because his severed tendon in his left hand index finger doesn't allow him to bend his index finger from the middle so he has to play with his palm below the neck
@HurricaneTBag You're right, but you can't say Deth are not a talented band. On the contrary, they are one of the most technical metal bands that actually mean anything. Mustaine is not great at lead guitar, but his rhythm skills are brilliant.
@HurricaneTBag Dude...Dave mustaine has had some of the best lead guitarists in metal in his band; Marty Friedman, Chris Poland, and Chris Broderick. All three are insane, chris broderick is probably just as diverse as the other two, but he's like 28.
@HurricaneTBag Another douche bag comment. I'm guessing you think that Marty Friedman would have preferred to play in Metallica? Oh wait...Metallica is "too heavy" for any of the lead players in Megadeth right? Fuckin idiot. Megadeth is the ultimate thrash metal band. Chris Poland really loves what he did in Megadeth so shut your cock pleaser up.
@DimitriVHefley Just about any professional would prefer to play with Metallica, simply because it would further their career as a musician. Two, reading isn't your strong suit, we've established this a long time ago. Yeah, Poland likes what he did in Megadeth because he had to kiss Dave's ring later in life to play on TSHF. You're an idiot if you think Poland's Deth stuff is anywhere near as good as his stuff with Ohm or Ohmphries. Or if you think it fits his style and talents more.
@HurricaneTBag Once again, another outrages claim, Poland never kissed Dave's ass to play on TSHF. So you think people would prefer to play with Metallica because they are more popular? Another poser fucking statement. Metallica is popular because it's fucking weak music, just like any pop band. I think Peace Sells tops anything he's done with OHM, and Return to Metalopolis is better than his OHM stuff, and I'm a huge OHM fan.
@DimitriVHefley Wow, outrageous...that's a mighty big word for you. Poland played on TSHF because he made up with Dave a long time ago and basically kissed his ass and let Dave talk all the shit in the world about him without doing shit. Also, Marty turned his ass down. Metallica a pop band? Get real, they write their own music and got very little radio air play when their music was released. You must think Zeppelin is a pop band too.
@DimitriVHefley They have a much more diverse musical profile and let other members contribute far more than Dave lets his guys contribute. In short, you've demonstrated that you know very very very little about music history, much less Metal history. Get back to contributing nothing to society.
@HurricaneTBag Lol just more douche bagness from a douche bag. Chris Poland IIIISSS OHM, not Pag, not Kof, it's all about Chris Poland, go to the OHM website, it's Chris Poland's website. Of course Poland has to let the other members contribute, there are only THREE OF THEM. I love Jazz and Jazz/Fusion, it's amazing but it doesn't compare to the early Megadeth stuff. And what do you contribute to society? Your shit talking? Congratulations retard.
@DimitriVHefley The other day I helped two of my friends get out of their lease and collect unemployment from an employer who fired them after they refused to work for free. I also fixed two of their doors and patched a hole in their wall their ex-roommate left. How about you?
@HurricaneTBag LOLOL making up scenarios where you're some kind of community hero...LOL you're life is a joke, as are all your youtube posts. Keep it up buddy, your fantasy world keeps growing and growing.
@bergAgreb The thing is what I'm saying is true, especially for Poland fans, two minute guitar solos over a thrashy riff is below this guys skill and not taking true advantage of his talent. I loved his stuff with Deth, I love Deth, and I'm glad that Megadeth gave a platform for Poland and Marty to launch their careers...but imagine if Allan Holdsworth or Pat Metheny had a career just doing guitar solos in a thrash metal band. Shit would suck, bro.
@bergAgreb LOL you fuckin douche bag, talkin shit on youtube like a little bitch. Me a virgin? Fuckin please, cunt. The only thing I get on youtube for is to shut little wanna be punks up like you. Get back to grade school kiddo, this is for big kids.
Chris Broderick? No...he's like 40! He might LOOK 28, cuz' he takes great care of himself by working-out and eating right, and with his ridiculous skill-level on guitar, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that he doesn't have time to do drugs (which can age people pretty quickly!)
Yamaha have really great guitars. The only bad thing is that their pickups may not be so great. But when you put in a new one, man they sound even great. Plus they're really easy to play.
yeah, I've noticed the same thing, man. both chris and marty have they own unique style. you can tell that they did they own solos, and mustaine sang a shit to they.
No its true. If you look carefully on all the Marty and Chris Poland videos you can see they are all wearing an ear piece, which is remotely connected to a mic, Dave is singing into...
Otherwise they would get stuck and wouldn't know what to play next you see
@1madaboutguitar It is true. Mike Clink said that...Dave often played solos on piano too for his lead guitarists.
Dave himself objected when Clink wanted Marty to play exactly as Dave wanted. Dave said if Marty can execute his ideas in his own comfort zone of playing that'll be better.
See, none of these former Megadeth lead players did anything phenomenal since they left the band ... Why ? ? ?
What? Are you serious. I mean we are talking about 2 of the most intelligent guitar players/musicians of all time... and your telling me they are both lost without Dave Mustaine composing THEIR solos on a piano. Ha Ha
I find that very interesting, considering Dave Mustaine only uses pentatonic and chromatic scales yet Marty and Chris both seem to bend the realms melodic creativity with their note selection.
@rationemreddere Marty is guitar God in Japan now, nearly equivalent to their version of Hendrix, and Chris Poland has been touring for years with Ohm: and Umphrey's McGee occasionally. Just because they aren't as popular as Deth does not mean they can't be better.
Dude really... All professional performers wear an ear piece so that they know where they are, and so that they can hear themselves so that they know they're playing right, and for singing so that they're in tune. It has nothing to do with dave singing solos to them. Also, Dave turned metal off to both of them, which is why they never did anything great afterwards, so you tell me who made who be "Ruined"
I know. Mustaine sucks balls at lead guitar compared to these guys. Mustaine is pretty average at lead guitar, very sloppy, but people like Chris (both of them) and Marty are just gods
Couldn't disagree more... Chris Poland may be may favorite guitarist when It comes to leads (Hes a god) but Broderick does a solid job on Endgame, and Dave's vocal perfomance is good and of course the riffs are amazing. (His solos are a step up from usual to)
in the whole Marty vs Chris thing....yeah Marty was awesome but for me CChris is just in a league of his own and I think it says something that Chris was the only Megadeth lead guitarist whom Dave didn't have any input on his solos. With Marty and all the other guys Dave would make suggestions about solos and make them change them to suit.
holy shit

@nomadwarlockrp70,
Chris Broderick? No...he's like 40! He might LOOK 28, cuz' he takes great care of himself by working-out and eating right, and with his ridiculous skill-level on guitar, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that he doesn't have time to do drugs (which can age people pretty quickly!)

Got it, theres a different word for this in greek and i got confused. Thanks!
destihado1 2 years ago
He roles the tone off, its not on zero.
ruffles272 1 year ago
@destihado1 I think he cuts back on the tone on the guitar to get that muted "violin like" sound.
believer06 1 year ago
@believer06 actually he uses an esp neck pick up in the bridge to get that buttery violin sound
the8thvanguard 1 year ago
@destihado1 i know!!! nobody could ever emulate that butter smooth violin induced guitar sound, it's brilliant \m/

Yamaha have really great guitars. The only bad thing is that their pickups may not be so great. But when you put in a new one, man they sound even great. Plus they're really easy to play.

It's absolutely hillarious that dave M has said he sang all the solos first in megadeth and then chris and marty just played them...sure dave....
Skipissatan 2 years ago 6
yeah, I've noticed the same thing, man. both chris and marty have they own unique style. you can tell that they did they own solos, and mustaine sang a shit to they.

OMFGRAZORGATOR 1 year ago
No its true. If you look carefully on all the Marty and Chris Poland videos you can see they are all wearing an ear piece, which is remotely connected to a mic, Dave is singing into...
Otherwise they would get stuck and wouldn't know what to play next you see
1madaboutguitar 2 years ago 4
lol (I hope that was internet sarcasm)
Skipissatan 2 years ago
@1madaboutguitar It is true. Mike Clink said that...Dave often played solos on piano too for his lead guitarists.
Dave himself objected when Clink wanted Marty to play exactly as Dave wanted. Dave said if Marty can execute his ideas in his own comfort zone of playing that'll be better.
See, none of these former Megadeth lead players did anything phenomenal since they left the band ... Why ? ? ?
rationemreddere 1 year ago
1madaboutguitar 1 year ago
@rationemreddere Marty is guitar God in Japan now, nearly equivalent to their version of Hendrix, and Chris Poland has been touring for years with Ohm: and Umphrey's McGee occasionally. Just because they aren't as popular as Deth does not mean they can't be better.
goldenchopsticks 1 year ago
@goldenchopsticks Him and Paul have their lives set up PRETTY damn well there
HurricaneTBag 1 year ago
Dude really... All professional performers wear an ear piece so that they know where they are, and so that they can hear themselves so that they know they're playing right, and for singing so that they're in tune. It has nothing to do with dave singing solos to them. Also, Dave turned metal off to both of them, which is why they never did anything great afterwards, so you tell me who made who be "Ruined"
ruffles272 1 year ago
LMFAO Thanks for making my day with your comment
1madaboutguitar 1 year ago
I know. Mustaine sucks balls at lead guitar compared to these guys. Mustaine is pretty average at lead guitar, very sloppy, but people like Chris (both of them) and Marty are just gods
ToaJoe 2 years ago 4
Chris looks so old but he is an amazing and underrated guitar player!

Is it just me or does he look like Al Bundy from Married with Children?
Love the tone btw
ahmettc 2 years ago
Is it just me or does his tone and phrasing is very reminiscent of Eric Johnson? Seriously Chris Poland is a monster player, he has a killer sound!

It does actually...
far out i would cream myself if i could get that tone on my amp :D

lol yeah i want that tone too... my classic 50 is nice but it doesn't sound like *that*

He sounds like Johnson, Holdsworth, and keyboaridst Jan Hammer put into a blender to me. Maybe with a hint of Coltrane over it.

chris must get back in megadeth,,, dave,s new albums sucks,
erikouwehand 2 years ago
Couldn't disagree more... Chris Poland may be may favorite guitarist when It comes to leads (Hes a god) but Broderick does a solid job on Endgame, and Dave's vocal perfomance is good and of course the riffs are amazing. (His solos are a step up from usual to)
AntarcticanCommunist 2 years ago
music is not about solo,s mate,
erikouwehand 2 years ago
yea it is.
bigmonkeyman44 2 years ago
in the whole Marty vs Chris thing....yeah Marty was awesome but for me CChris is just in a league of his own and I think it says something that Chris was the only Megadeth lead guitarist whom Dave didn't have any input on his solos. With Marty and all the other guys Dave would make suggestions about solos and make them change them to suit.
