Great performance of a great song. The album version is a bit more intense and haunting, a little more high energy as well....but this is nice. More of a mellow take on it. Nice upload.
This song is destined to become one of the greats. It may take a while for the general population to 'get it', but, once they do it will be up there with the great ones, such as The Boxer, The Sounds of Silence, etc. I love this song, especially this particular performance.
@davidbassplanc comment from a year ago. If you're going to spend time asking me about it, you better refresh my memory while you're at it... fuck man
Not really. There is a distinct Dylan sound here. There are a lot of Singer-Songwriter types that don't sound like Dylan. Frank Turner, Chuck Ragan, Chris McCaughan... Going older Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen... It just depends on how much they want to incorporate that sound.
@kizbee it's a compliment to say he sounds like Bob Dylan, or other artist. I thought good artist were never to be born again. But it is true, he has a unique sound and he is soo good in his own way.
I don't listen to music that much and this is the first song I've really felt reached out and grabbed me for awhile. Yes I think its a little Dylanish but I don't think there is anything wrong with that. They aren't a Dylan rip off though as the band seems to do lots of different stuff.
the song may pay tribute to dylans style, but none of their other stuff sounds like this one. theyre a great and very unique band. i wish we had more bands like this nowadays.
You can always ask on the Blitzen Trapper forum, to be sure. The guys, especially Marty, whose guitar you're discussing, are really good about answering questions.
I'm sorry. I have nothing against this guy, he's great. But you can't compare him or anyone else to Dylan. No one is like Dylan, no one ever will be. Just because this guy plays acoustic and harmonica and sounds slightly like Dylan doesn't mean they're comparable. Dylan is just too great, he's one of a kind, and no one can ever touch him.
im not picking up as much dylan as you are all saying. i feel like every image heavy folk singer songwriter is labeled as sound like dylan a little to easily. i see the influences, but as far as sound, id say young is a closer match. just my opinion. and the whistle is a loon call.
I agree with you about acoustic artists all being compared to dylan way too fast, but this performance is Dylan all the way, from his singing style to his harp licks.
I guess... I still dont agree. I'll give you this song, but the rest of their catalog doesnt sound much like Dylan. The Neil Young + Crazy Horse comparison below is pretty accurate I think.
I think people may be drawing the comparison between this and Dylan because songs like blowin in the wind are very similar to this song. You cant deny that! Same key, same capo position, same harmonica key, same chords, even the tune is similar!
This song sounds like something Bob Dylan could have written easily, but most their stuff sounds more like Neil Young and Crazy Horse, like it could be from Zuma. Like, Big Black Bird, is a good example. Really great, but they'll never one-up Okkervil River.
A friend sent this song to me randomly and I ended up playing it over and over. I'd heard 'Wild Mountain Nation' but I didn't make the connection for awhile. Love this band.
When I first heard it, my initial thought was "Dang, that sounds like Dylan....". And it is just a great jam of a song. I've played it over and over but haven't tired of it yet.
Are you out of your mind? That is a young Bob Dylan clone there, and I couldn't be happier about it. I love Bob Dylan and I love this band. I have over 30 Dylan albums, I have two Blitzen Trapper albums and I will be getting more if they keep this up. If you don't hear the similarity that's fine, but don't say every music lover on this thread is ignorant, when maybe it's your own lack of knowledge that's standing in the way. And thanks for posting this video, it's a great performance.
I saw these guys a couple years ago in Portland when they opened for the Hold Steady. Amazing show, not many people were there to see them yet, but those who were loved it!
mudbassfan, great art has no age. :) This is simply put... a great band. I was lucky enough to see them up for Two Gallants about a year ago in D.C., at the rock n roll hotel. I was hooked right away.
this is a good song, of course there is a big Dylan influence, but no more than dozens of other bands. The lyrics are NOTHING like Dylan, though, beyond their story telling quality.
The whole album is awesome. Its ruff around all the right edges. Buddy of mine saw them the weekend before last in VA area and said it was a great show. Not to mention the fact that they were selling their album on vinyl. come on now, how cool is that!
BTW, 'almasoulguy' is his mothers used douche bag.
