I am open to all the Norma recordings that are available in the market. But I must say that none has the dramatic intensity in this recording, despite the fact that Callas wasn't vocally perfect. Her operatic art has transended all vocal criteria.
This recording was so heavily criticized when it came out. I have ALWAYS loved it finding Callas just wonderful. No she was not able to hit the high notes as in years before; however, there was so much depth to her singing of the role that I still find this recording to be sublime.
callas is the only soprano who can sing with a wicked, raspy chest register and sing legato at the same time. other sopranos either have terribly chest registers or "bark" the chest register without regard for the musical line
@raigekimaru You are right. The way she barks "Giura" is incredible. But the whole recording is amazing. I have it also (together with several other Callas Normas) but this is the one I listen to again and again. By far the best.
I listened to this Callas version so many times in 1989 when life seemd not so bright then. Callas with her incisive clear message kept my spirits high. Of course Corelli was the perfect complement to Callas
Wonderful! I have this entire recording, and it's an immeasurable treasure indeed! Franco and Maria indeed make a perfect couple as Pollione and Norma, Ludwig is a wonderful, rich-voiced, creamy Adalgisa, and Nicola Zaccaria an outstanding Oroveso! And yes, it's from 1960.
These moments of opera will not be repeated anymore. Thanks a lot, magghot. Do you know by any chance from which year is that, please? I guess late 50's.
Callas, Corelli, Ludwig, Zaccaria, Serafin; Five names, five legends!
Thanks for posting this.

Corelli was the best Pollione to Callas' Norma. I wish they had recorded togther when she was still in her prime.

La Callas di questo periodo ha la voce stanca e gioca troppo su suoni intervocalici, non ostante ciò resta la migliore Norma all times...:)
