Should do a remake of Catch 22 actually that could win an oscar or some Updike but the debate Scene in Citizen Kane also War of the Worlds in radio or some futurist thinking like in 2050
@WatsDaWurd There isn't any cinematic documentation of the first Academy Award ever made. It was broadcasted via Radio and the sound recording has yet to appear on the internet.
Nice of him to mention Tracy. Perhaps not one of the more deserved lead Oscars, but at least he went on to get 2 more nods and wasn't just a 1-hit wonder. I suspect part of the reason why Newman never won in his prime was because he usually made it look so damned easy! Performances like Schell's, however, clearly involved intensity that could be seen on the screen and in his face, and even though film professionals should be receptive to subtleties and nuances, the winners rarely reflect this...
Actually Spence wasn't so thrilled that he was mentioned as "the great old man": "Loosing to you was bad enough, you didn't need to put me in an asylum."
Not at all! I believe the reason this was posted 'all of a sudden' was beacuse he was honored at the Academy last week with a screening and panel discussion on this classic film.
Even if Schell's performance was better, he should have been in supporting; he doesn't take up a large portion of "JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBERG". Tracy would have been a been a more worthy winner, at least, because he plays a larger role.
Thats Warren Beatty chatting away to Natalie Wood behind Max Schell - cheerfully ignoring Joan Crawford reading the nominees names. The most interesting thing about the Oscars winners for 1961 movies is that 50 years later all four acting winners are still living (as of today) - (Schell, Loren, Charakis and Moreno)the only year between 1928 and 1979 where this happens.
@eggsarah Hadn't realized that. You are so right. All were 30-ish then and all are still active and working. Love these old clips. It really is a bygone era.
PS I hope they will finally post George Chakiris' win now that the other three are here! And how about Lila Kedrova?
@eggsarah what about 1978? All 4 Acting Winners from that year are still alive (Jon Voight, Jane Fonda, Christopher Walken, Maggie Smith) But it was only 33 years ago, its quite amazing that all 4 acting winners from 1961 are still with us.
just think... Maximillian Schell made "Judgement at Nuremberg" the same year he starred in that terrible German TV adaptation of "Hamlet" that featured so famously on MST3K. Just goes to show you that you can't always blame the actors for the bad films they feature in.
What a talented and gorgeous man! He's one of my favorite actors, still.

Tracy should have gotten an Oscar for at least one of his nominated performances in Kramer's films -- all three were flawless!

Isn't that past winner Ray Milland in front of Paul Newman? He won the same year as Joan, sixteen years before.
And of course thats Greer Garson and her husband, Buddy, seated behind Max and in front of Stuart. Greats all!!

IMO One of the greatest wins in the history of the category. Very powerful and memorable performance, one of my all time favorites.
