  • The more I learn about the human race, the deeper my shame.

I did not found another race that is more frightening and monstrous than the human race. PLEASE don't stop to fight against this barbarism, let's make a fist against animal abuse worldwide and maybe the day will come, that we are allowed to call ourselves "civilized'. Thank you for sharing this with us.

  • i figured there was more to it then all these accidental fires. it is HORRIFIC THAT WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE " A CIVILIZED NATION." My heart bleeds for the innocent suffering at the hands of evil people. This has to be stopped!!!

  • I TRY to imagine what the pigs went through. This just rips out my heart. Why are Animals treated as nothing but mere objects, a slab of meat---void of any emotions whatsoever. They must have been terrified. If this truly is premeditated---I hope the people responsible burn in a fiery pit they can never escape, themselves!!!!!!!

  • To MsSmokehouse and especially to Titfucker 1990 (yeah that pretty much sums you up) - I will expect that you have no smoke detectors and will not be calling the fire department since you seem to think that this is a perfectly good way to die. And do you live in a little locked cage where you cannot even turn around? No, of course you don't. And why not? Because that is no way for ANY creature to live or die.

  • if u want the other side of the story instead of all this constant bullshit just watch(truth of modern pork production)that is what really happens in these barns , u will see it is not all doom and gloom, like the people who put bullshit like this on the wed, they should at least stay with the truth, but deep down these people are monsters who prey on unfortunate accidents. just to scare the public, shame on u!!!!!!!

  • lmao... ya got me.. i had a great nap actually thanks haha

  • bring it on asshole! did at one point in my commet, did i say anything about killing the animals, yeah i agree im sure what they go through is horrible... i was just trying to bring up the subject of the farmers situation.. maybe ur all right maybe the guy was a dick... but now you all took it the wrong way and desided to be douches... so go to hell.. and what excactly do you do?? or did you jsut bullshit and say its ur job? anywho... fuck off and dont waste anymore of my time by comenting!

  • Wow... feel better? Need a nap? :)

  • you are clearly NOT in the agriculture industry are you... you know whats its like to get fucked over by your goverment everytime you turn around???

i dont blame a single farmer who egts sick of it and burns his barn to the ground

  • Wow: did you just admit that it's all arson?

  • Yeah, sounds like an admission to me. So let me get this straight... getting "fucked" by your government is a great reason to cause unspeakable agony to the creatures in your care, creatures which probably suffer at your hands on a daily basis anyway? I would LOVE to shove your ass in a farrowing box and leave you there for a solid month, to see how you like it. And I'm in the business of cleaning up the animal world after assholes like you come along, thank-you-very-much.

  • dont u think maybe the farmer feel bad for his loss? sure maybe the animals suffered but they could not be helped, as hard as everyone tried. I used to work in hog barn it is not as gruesome as u make it seem , apperantly u r only getting one side of the story, But usally, the more gruesome the stories r being told the more people like u like it

  • The animals might have been able to get out if they weren't in cages. Why don't producers let us know that pigs are in cages? Why are there so many fires? My spouse has been called out to help put out the fires and we can't believe how bad things have gotten. Why are you so angry?

  • @gripdoggy they keep them in cages to control breeding, disease, and so they can monitor the individual pigs to make sure they are getting enough food, and that they are healthy. and there are multiple ways that fires can start, there could have been bad wiring, something could have sparked. but i highly doubt that the farmer, that has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars on this, did this on purpose.

  • @Mtthyman

We're very concerned that the number of trapped pigs dying in fires in Canada is climbing: almost 100,000 now (in 1.5 years). The cages they're locked in basically insure that they cannot escape & no employee has been at the barn to initiate fire control once the spark begins. The industry, with its use of cages, needs to move forward: there is something gravely wrong with this picture. The government could step in and help pork producers move forward and into a better system.

  • Oh my god. I can't believe this. This is one of the most horrible things I've ever seen. Are you telling me that the people who set fire to their barns actually get money from the government as bailout?! So if I understand this, they get a) insurance money (presumably) and b) money from the government? Do you have a list of the people who have been compensated? If so, can you post it? If not, how can we find out?

  • Unfortunately this info isn't collected in one central source. The best chance is to check media coverage and contact the reporters to ask if the specific insurance agency was mentioned. Then try contacting the insurance agency directly. I don't think a Freedom of Information request would be filled as it's a 3rd party request.

We have a messed up system where - if animals are involved - the perpetrator is always protected.

  • The federal government is currently determining eligibility criteria producers must meet for bail-out funds. The decision is expected by late September.

TIME IS CRITICAL! PLEASE CONTACT MINISTER RITZ AND DEMAND THAT THE BAIL-OUT FUNDING ONLY BE AVAILABLE TO PRODUCERS WHO INSTALL SMOKE DETECTORS AND SPRINKLER SYSTEMS.

    Thank you!

  • You ppl better get out there and vote next election, for a better government: one that will stop these horrible crimes. We have no one to enforce our laws. The police are useless and incompetant. We need lawyers who will step up to the plate and sue these bastards.

  • This is well, for a change lost for a word as to how to describe how I feel !!!! Thank you for posting this and making the world aware of what is going on - add it on to the list of Canada's Shame .. every country has a list, some just seem to be getting longer than others. As a Canadian, well I just want to throw up from absolute disgust ! No one can begin to imagine their fear - their pain :(

  • There is no such thing as humane slaughter Sneakypony! Can you think of anyway that you'd like to die right now in a humane manner? I can't!

Is Canada going backwards? They refuse to stop the seal slaughter despite international condemnation, and now this.

  • disgusting...what these poor animals have to suffer because people think we have the right to eat them. Shame on all of us. Thanks for bring attention to this matter

  • Thank you Twyla and CETFA for bringing this horror to light. It is time for factory farming and horrors against pigs and other farm animals to end

  • Go Vegan and end the discrimination of all sentient beings .

  • Canadian Statistics on Animal Lives Lost from Barn Fires:

    2007 - 3,700 burned alive

    2008 - 30,500 burned alive

2009 (as of Aug) - 49,500 burned alive

If recent history holds true, expect the number for 2009 to increase weekly.

  • Thankyou Twyla for sharing this information. As usual it's all about the money with no regard for the animals. I understand their feeling of desperation but that is no excuse to resort to this.

  • Dear god what is wrong with you people?

Discussing whether this is right or wrong should never be an issue. These pictures reminded me of the holocaust and the piles of human bodies, this should never happen. Will we never change!!!!!! :(

  • To veganloraine: Like it or not, many humans choose to include meat in their diet.

It's up to all meat eaters to understand where meat comes from and ensure that all animals are treated humanely, and that they are transported and slaughtered humanely as well.

Meat doesn't grow on styrofoam trays in the supermarket - every steak was a living, breathing steer at one point. Same for the pork chop; it was part of live pig not that long ago.

  • Yup: a live pig, trapped in a cage, praying to the pig god that she doesn't go up in flames before she's slaughtered.

  • pigs wouldn't die in barn burnings if everyone chose compassion over killing and went vegan. they wouldn't die in slaughterhouses either.

i don't know why we don't put all our efforts not into making the lives of those we've deemed food animals incrementally better while they await in misery for slaughter, but into creating a society that treats all life with mercy.

  • If these are planned barn burnings to get insurance money, the owners should be charged with cruelty to animals, not receive any insurance money, and banned from owning another animal anytime.

Unfortunately, installing sprinklers or smoke detectors in every barn in Canada will never happen. Pipes freeze in winter and smoke detectors don't work well in dusty areas with bedding.

It's easy to cast stones when you aren't involved - YouTube videos sometimes present only one side of a story.

  • Um, sneakypony: what exactly is the other side of the story to thousands and thousands and thousands of pigs burning to death? Nobody is casting stones: they are just showing something that is happening to living, feeling mammals on an increasing scale. Why should some people get to keep thousands of these animals and fail to protect them fire? If they do, then we live in a country that is a free-for all, as far as animals are concerned, and we are thus a cruel, backward nation. A disgrace,

  • There are something called dry systems which do not contain water, but pressurized air or nitrogen.

These can be installed in cold climates. So pipes freezing is not an excuse. Not having fire sprinklers in barns is irresponsible.

When there are lives at stake, human or non human, it's our duty to protect them, especially if we've enslaved them.

  • How much do these systems cost?

How much do you want to pay for Canadian meat, or would you rather put Canadian farmers out of business and buy your meat from China where animal abuse is rampant, and hygiene standards leave a lot be desired.

Unsupported claims of "dry systems" without links or information on their cost mean nothing - and you still need to have sufficient water to run them. Farmers use wells, not municipal water.

  • "Canadian Farmers": nice one. We're talking about "pork producers" who are in the export business here. Not "farmers" who altruistically feed Canadians.

Maybe, just maybe, if we use animals for food, we can give them something back: such as freedom from burning to death in a fire. Maybe we can pay more for meat, esp. given that we don't actually need it to survive.

China is no worse than we are when it comes to pork production. Ractopamine, antibiotics: Canadian "farmers" do it too.

  • What the F? The pigs are in cages? being burnt up? This is heart-breaking. What a dirty little secret you have stumbled upon...

  • I too have been tracking the pig barn fires in the news. With so many in such a short time period, and so many animals enduring extreme suffering as a result, it is unbelievable, and totally unacceptable, that no action is being taken to address the issue. If our tax dollars are indeed going to be used to restructure the pig industry, money needs to be provided only with the condition that measures are taken to stop these fires!
