I totally get why others prefer "Dave" to "Rain," but I didn't know there was an original UK version. So, from the mid 80's until now I only knew a song called "Rain." And while listening to "Dave" for the first time just a moment ago on my remastered "In The Long Grass" I'm thinking, "Wait a second...Shouldn't that be 'Rain'?" All is clear now...but I prefer the one I knew for the past 25 years or so: "Rain."
The original song - with its original intent - was, is and will always be a better song. Why? Primarily because it was written with honesty and soul; not as a replacement due to corporate pressures.
Am I dreaming these things or was there a different video in '85? I distinctly remember Bob walking in wet sloppy grass with the rain pouring down in the video. I was a major Rats fan in the mid 80's, wore out many cassetts listening to them over and over. Nice that cassetts are a thing of the past, they couldn't hold up to us obsessed fans. lol
The song was written for Dave Mchale the Rats saxophone player who sadly died this year the Rain song has been played here over the Dave video Dave is a better song Rain is great to RIP Dave
That story has to be bullshit about the censorship. The censors had no problem with the flamboyant elton john releasing Daniel or Goodbye Yellow Brick Road a song clearly refrerencing a "boy toy".
I thought USA was the Land of the Free? this is Dave but cos Uncle Sam's censors thought it had homosexual undertones the lyrics had to be changed! absolutely pathetic! it was a tribute the unofficial "rat" Dave McHale.....I thought the Chinese were bad for censorship..cant upset the redneck religious freaks in the U.S. now can we?
Yeah - when the Rats were due to release their 1984 single Dave in the US, the music producers there felt it was "too gay", as Bob appears to be passionately addressing his song to a man. However they failed to realize that it was written for a long time friend struggling with heroin addiction, and that "dave" was slang for heroin!
So, a lot of people feel that the lyrics of the original Dave were too powerful to be mucked up like that - check it out, its a pretty awesome song!

the censored "Dave" video! WHY did they feel a need to do that? Bob could've been played by Jerry Seinfeld!
