  • Sweet, you play a style I really enjoy listening to, both electric and acoustic.

What brand is the harmonica, I couldn´t figure it out: "Bb diatonic" ??

Kind regards fr a fellow harpplayer in Sweden....

  • @bigcubics Hello there, thanks for your kind comments. The harmonica is an instrument that has character both acoustic and amplified, great fun to play in both settings. Yes the harmonica is a Bb, it's a Hot Rod harp with an acrylic comb. I mainly play Hohner Marine Bands, Crossovers and Seydel 1847's these days. Warm regards, Lee

  • muito bom!

  • Comment removed

  • W O W !!! that was awesome

i know little about harmonicas so forgive my questions =)

What type of harmonica is that? diatonic or chromatic and if it is diatonic, what key is it?

  • @j4m35ac Cheers glad you enjoyed it. No problem on the questions, I'm using a Bb diatonic harmonica here in the key of F. A chromatic harmonica has a button on the side, like the kind Stevie Wonder or Larry Addler normally play. The button 'in' gives the player the black keys on the piano, 'out' the white keys. Thanks, Lee

  • F**k me................you.......are....amazing i wish i could play the harmonic like that, my grandad used to play to me when i was younger and ive always wanted to learn how to play it.

  • @mark123shandy Hey thanks for your praise! Never to late Mark and a decent harmonica costs about £40 to buy so you could always have a go and see if you like it. There's certainly plenty of videos on YouTube about learning to play the harmonica. Never a better time to learn in fact. Lee

  • absolutely love this :'') so much talent man

  • @rockingwithaguitar Thanks Chloe, it's mostly just good old fashioned practise. Keep on playing! Lee

  • Show off!

  • Oh wow, that was amazing.

That looks so hard as well, so much awesome technique.

You deserve three thumbs up. And that's more than I can give!

  • @whazaa858 Cheers Jacob and thanks for watching. Lee

  • asd

  • chuck norris can do that whilst talking

  • @TheFanta913 No doubt, the question on my mind is whether Bruce Lee could too

  • that's gotta be hard as hell!!!! i would like to play the harmonica.. I know to play the guitar but harmonica would be awesome to be able to do

  • @Crafter07 Well pick one up and have a go, you never know where it may take you. Thanks for watching Lee

  • As a musician, i really, really enjoy it! As a blues fan, u're awesome, dude! I'll search in the internet by something about the harmonica! Congratz!

  • @KuraiNato Hello from London, thanks for your kind words. The harmonica is intimately linked with the sound of the blues. Give it a try if you like the sound.

  • Excelento......

  • By the way, awesome performance

  • I really enjoyed this, you are awesome.

  • @stefs619 Cheers for watching and it's just a case of practise to play something like this.

  • Sounds great. You are quite an inspiration. Would you please post the tab. LOL

  • @kapetanj Hi John, thanks for the kind words and feedback. Sorry I don't post tab. Even if I did, have you got any idea how complicated it would be to write this out? I don't think I could do it. Life's too short hey. Thanks for watching! Lee

  • lee, that's why i put a 'lol' on that post. the harp part sounded pretty intricate. never in a million years would i have expected the tab., great job. love your sound, love your videos. john

  • @kapetanj o.k sorry I missed that. I do receive such requests from time to time so I thought you may be serious. Thanks, Lee

  • great job buddy I am no expert

but u do a great job

  • @jhdobermans Cheers! A person's ears, expert or not, are the ultimate judge as to whether something sounds good or not. Thanks for your compliment. Lee

  • Freakin great, i just started learning harmonica and your playing definitely inspires me to keep practicing.

  • @nicksib911 Comments like that make my day. Thanks so much and I'm glad this tune inspires you! Best regards Lee

  • Hello Lee,I'm your big fan.You inspired me to learn to play the harmonica.I just bought a harmonica(C).I really have a problem to achieve a single note ,I have tried several methods but it doesn't sound right, and i cant track what hole I'm blowing/drawing.Could you give me any tips, how to begin learning?

Hope you will have time to answer. Respect M

  • @001milos Hi M, thanks for question, I responded on your same comment posted on one of my slow blues videos.

  • WTF? hey mate, i need to learn to play harmonica... i play guitar so i know some musical theory.. but the harmonica, i just play things like Dirty Old Town (pogues) or Heart of gold (neil young)... so i have no clue. but i want to learn to play blues and rockandroll such as Doctor Feelgood and The New York Dolls.

so, dude, do you know a book or web that would help me?? lots of thanks!!!!

  • @nachowill95 Hi Nacho, thanks for your comment and apologies for my slow response. Dave Barrett and Jon Gindick have both written good tuitional books and also have many youtube videos for beginners on YouTube. Dave also runs a killer subscription site for blues harp, just search for him on google.

On YouTube, check out Adam Gussow and Ronnie Shelist who have a tonne of videos for beginner harp players. I have about 30 tuition videos but I focus more on intermediate & expert. Best of luck Lee

  • I love your sound, but just as important I like the way you reply to the people who write you...I am a FAN

  • @PeterBrucePhoto Hi Peter, thanks for posting a comment. One of the great things about YouTube is definitely the comments and interaction you can get from people all over the world. Where time allows I always try to write back. Many thanks for your support and interest. Lee

  • Hi, this is nice. When did you first pickup the harmonica? I just got one for christmas and I'm 22, could I be this good by the time I'm 30 with consistent practice? How long would it take to become good enough to jam blues with my friends on guitar and drums in pubs and stuff? Thanks.

  • @Lpoolboy Hello there. I started playing when I was 18, 22 years ago. I would say it takes about 10 years to get really start getting good on an instrument for most people. I couldn't have played this tune after 10 years, but that's me. Most people plateau after about 5 years and there aren't many great players in proportion to the number of people who play. To get good enough to have some fun and jam with friends is easily achievable. You could easily be doing that after 3 months or so. Lee

  • @leesankeygroup continuing on....I would encourage you to start playing with other musicians as soon as possible. You will pick up a lot. Initially this can be in a friendly environment e.g. round a friends house etc. Just have some fun and build confidence. Learn to play single notes cleanly and bends (so you can get some expression in there). Theory wise if you want to play the blues learn about 12 bar and 1,4,5 sequences. Also about playing in different positions e.g. 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

  • man hes really got the blues!! Hes crying!!!

  • Amazing!

  • You are so good!!!

    Nice!!!

  • I saw Lee quite a few years ago now at the Festival Hall in Basildon,Essex..was the Blues joint. Its gone now, but they had some good bands there, the Butler twins came over from the states etc. Of all the harp players ive ever seen, Lee is the BEST without a shadow of a doubt. Superb player.

  • Hi Lee,

    Fantastic playing.

    THank you very much.

    Steph.

  • how can I learn this ? without teacher ?

  • @M2CardTricks The short answer is it would be very hard, If you are prepared to invest 10-15 years of practising then may be you can. I didn't have a teacher. Like magic tricks you have practise a lot to do advanced moves. There aren't any short cuts to playing a piece like this. Thanks for watching Lee

  • @M2CardTricks if I didn't have roommates I would totally pick up the harmonica.

  • @MaxwellsAttourney Well the harmonica is just about a portable instrument as one could hope for. You can take one pretty much anywhere. A lot of people play in their cars for example. Perhaps you could get to the level where your room mates wouldn't mind the odd bit of blues? Lee

  • @leesankeygroup Oh I play banjo and guitar, but i imagine the shrills of a newbie harmonica player could be somewhat annoying those initial months :-/. As for playing outside the home, the NYC subways would probably be far less forgiving than my roomates.

  • This is why i wanna learn the harmonica!

    In your face jimmy hendrix!

  • @zympozium Sweet!

  • Think if you just put on some drums, mabye a few small tunes with violin, a Jew's harp and the someone singing like the singer in spiderbait haha! ;)

Would be so freaking awsome :D

  • Loved it!

  • Holy crap is what I say too :O Man you're goooood ;) thumbs up for you

  • @ErikBz Thanks man, I'm glad you enjoyed the tune. Greetings from London. Lee

  • @leesankeygroup I'm playing some too but I'm really not that good :P It's getting better and better though :D

  • holy crap :_

  • jesus christ blow me away why dont ya

  • @cherrypieman1 Cheers, thanks for watching.

  • wow. Bravo sir. That was incredible.

I just began trying to learn to the harmonica, mainly because I just saw good ol' Bobby Dylan in concert recently, haha.

  • @musiclover609 Thanks for your enthusiasm. If you were inspired by Bob Dylan to play the harmonica, you're in for a shock when you start looking around. Check out Little Walter, Sonny Terry, Sonny Boy Williamson, Kim Wilson, Brendan Power, Jason Ricci and Joe Filisko for examples of amazing harmonica playing, all with different styles. Lee

  • this is the most amazin thing ever!

  • @Nicodemus861 errrr that's very kind of you to say so. If you like this song, have a listen to another of my tunes called We're Leaving Here Together. Thanks for posting such a nice comment. Lee

  • I'm not worthy! I've been teaching myself the harp now for two years and to listen to the pro's doing in right always gives me goosebumps. This tune is epic a possible blues wonder I love it!

  • @polaris662 I still feel that way when I listen to people like Kim Wilson or Joe Filisko. I'm glad I have provided some inspiration to you and bare in mind it took me over 20 years before I was able to write a tune like this. So keep on going. Best regards Lee

  • What kind of harmonica do you use?

  • @euFrooG In this video I'm using a Hot Rod harp made by Tim Northcut with an acrylic comb. I don't think he makes them anymore. However, this piece can be played on any standard tuned diatonic harmonica. I use Hohner Marine Bands customised by Steve Weston and Thomas Hanke and also Honher Crossover straight of the box.

  • awesome, I wish I could do that.... really it's great

  • awesome, I wish I could do that.... really awesom!!

  • @euFrooG many thanks. Practise for 20 years or so and may be...

  • there's some serious tongue blocking here...

  • @omfsouza Thanks for noticing. Most of this tune is tongue blocked. There is no way to play it if you only lip block. Lee

  • WOW! Awesome! Loved listening to it... had me moving in my seat. I just bought one 2 weeks ago and want to learn so bad. Keep up the work. Watching you play inspires me more to learn, thanks.

  • @Darktorturefaery I'm glad you liked the song. Best of luck with learning to play. I have some blues harmonica lessons on my channel which you may find helpful. Thanks Lee

  • cool)

  • I have to comment once again beecause i actually have to turn down my computer volume on your video's because your acoustic tone is so powerful and clear it blow's me away Lee! I was wondering if you would share your secret of your powerful tone! Thank you ! Rusty Bergandine

  • @droverboy1 Hi Rusty, thanks such glowing praise. I'm flattered. To respond your question, tone is one of the hardest things to explain and acquire on all instruments. It's one of those things that there aren't any short cuts for. There are some basic things which really help like using tongue blocking, opening the throat and the way you use your hands. I might put a video together on these. However, I suspect it's been covered already elsewhere :-) Lee

  • Klasse, sehr gut und lässig!! Bravo!!!

  • @ruevo1 I don't know what this means, but I hope the presence of 'bravo' means it's a positive comment. Thanks for watching!

  • i love Bb

    and tongue block

But ı dont know how i can play

  • @orhun511 Hi, thanks for watching. This a pretty technical tune which would take a lot of practise even get close. Can you play Sonny Terry style of harmonica? That's a good place to start.

  • @leesankeygroup ı dont speak english so much

    I'm watching Adam and working

    i have a Bb marineband

but I have no free time

  • @leesankeygroup this is all tongue block or not

  • @orhun511 It is 90% tongue block.

  • Bravo !!!

    You are good

  • @viktorcowboy Thanks Man!

  • I can bend down notes, but overblows and overdraws are still a mystery to me.

  • @austinslevin Hi Jin, I'm not using overblows or overdraws on this tune. If you are interested in learning more about them look up Jason Ricci's YouTube channel, he covers the subject very well. Jason is a master of using overblows in a soulful way.

    Thanks

    Lee

  • your fantastic! may i ask what type of harmonica your using? and im a beginner do you know what type of harmonica i should be using? i was thinking a hohner hot metal key of D. any suggestions?

  • @insectfreak1 Hi There, thanks for your question. I'm using a hohner marine band harmonica here. If you are just starting out the choice of harp isn't massively important. The main consideration is the type of material the comb is made out of which affects the way the instrument feels in the mouth. Hohner, Suzuki, Seydel and Lee Oscar are all good choices. My favourite is the Hohner Marine Band or Crossover. I would start with an A or C harmonica. Lee

  • woah your good

  • @Dan272121 Hey Dan, thanks for your kind words also. As I said to Richard, it's a case of putting in a lot of practise. I was also luck enough to have a period of my life where I played the harmonica for a living. This gives you the opportunity to really work at it. I think the 10,000 hours rule definitely applies here! Lee

  • holy shit!!!! sir you play the shit out of this harmonica

  • @richardgeorgewilson Hi Richard, that's nice of you to say. It's taken a lot of practise and I'm still learning everyday. Thanks for watching. Lee

  • i still can't figure out how to bend notes, i use a hohner bluesband

  • @Karl23extreme Hi Karl, bending is quite straightforward once you get a basic handle on the technique. It can seem impossible for a long time and then all of sudden you get a glimpse of how to do it. The it's just a case of refinement. There's lot's of great tuitional videos on bending on YouTube. Try Adam Gussow's channel, he's covered just about everything to do with blues harmonica. Good luck. Lee

  • AWSOME

  • i have just bought myself a lee oskar, i have never played before, how did you go about learning to play?

  • @wahgawn Wow that's a big question to answer in this space! A few of basic tips are 1) Learn to get single notes cleanly. 2) Learn about playing in different "positions" on one harp. The main ones are 1st, 2nd (like this tune) and 3rd. 3) Play along with records and harmonica players who inspire you. For this you will need harps in the keys of G, A, C, D to begin with 4) Find a harp teacher near you and get some lessons 5) Practise, this instrument is hard. 6) Above all, enjoy it.

  • @wahgawn Also there are a few really great harmonica tuitional YouTube channels. The foue best in my opinion are Adam Gussow's, Jason Ricci's, Ronnie Shellist and Jon Grindick. They cover all the main areas in great detail. I also post the occasional tuitional video too.

  • Amazing!!!

  • @OnKingdomBusiness Thank you very much. If you like this song take look at my song "We're Leaving Here Together".

  • Are you Jay Sankey's brother :) ?

  • @SeleNazzy No relation.

  • NICE NICE NICE NICE!

  • @idwantstobefine Thanks for the kind words!

  • verdammt geil.ich hab gänsehaut bekommen

  • This dude"s awsome!

  • @nerblebun Hey thanks very much!

  • very very very nice dude :))

  • A 5 star blend of old-style playing, original ideas and something oddly reminisicent of the fiddle / pipes (in a good way). Thanks for posting, xxx

  • Thanks Will, hope to see you at LH some time soon!

    Lee

  • dude ive been watchin harp stuff on youtube fer a while. but this is the best stuff ive found yet. this guys amazing. ive been playin fer a year or so and im pretty good but man!!! i cant even come close!!! i only hope i can be this good one day!

  • @vampateer21 Hey thanks for the fantastic comments. If you've only been playing a year then your journey on the instrument has just started. It takes time and effort to play this kind of tune.

  • @vampateer21 Typically progress early on is easy. But things will start to get hard after 5 years. Expect to play for 10 years to be any good or perhaps even up to 20. Depends on the individual. But if you practice you'll get there. Just try and have fun on the way!

  • I have been learning the guitar for a year and i just love the sound of the monica so I have been thinking about buying one, this has really inspired me i wanna sound like this, how long have you been playing? PS i think you should stomp your foot on a wooden box, it would sound great!

  • @blobmudcowdung Hi Si, thanks for posting such a nice message. It's always great to hear that you've inspired someone. To answer your question I've been playing for 21 years. It takes a while to get the hang of any instrument, including the guitar.

  • @leesankeygroup If you like this harmonica style check out Sonny Terry. Definitely go a and buy a harp, they're not expensive and you may find you love playing it. There's also lots of brilliant video tutorials on you tube on how to play. Check out Adam Gussow or Ben Hewlitt for this style of harp.

  • Amazing!!!!

  • @bs66mustang Cheers!

  • Dood I just picked up the harmonica today and I have a few simple tunes and stuff dowen but OMG this blew my mind

  • Thanks for such a great reaction. If you like this style of harmonica check out Sonny Terry and Joe Filisko.

  • thats well ace, never knew a harmonica could make such funky tunes :D

  • Glad to have surprised you!

  • mate, I got a harp for Christmas and have been struggling to get a tune! This has been such an inspiration to me :) thankyou!

  • What a wonderful message. Thanks a lot! There's plenty of great information about playing the harmonica on youtube. Check out Adam Gussow's and Jason Ricci's channels for lessons on pretty much every aspect of playing the harmonica.

  • Also think about getting some lessons if you continue to struggle. The National Harmonica League has loads of information about local teachers and harmonica groups if you are based in the U.K. The maybe a harmonica meet-up near you too like the one London Harps. They are a great informal way to meet other players and get help and advice.

  • And... playing the harmonica well is tough, it may take a while to get the hang of the basics. But keep going and you'll get there. Just remember to try and have some fun on the way!

  • Rated 5/5...

    this RULES!!!!

  • Highly enjoyed, thank you Lee ;)

  • Ok, I have to know. Are you U-blocking this or do you block out of the side of you mouth? It is freaking amazing.

  • @Wally773MTG. HI Matt, thanks for the question and kind words. I tongue block using the side of my mouth. The trick on this tune is to use tongue blocking on both sides as well as lip pukering. I can't do that U thingy. In case you're not aware, one of the finest players of this style is Joe Filisko and he's also based in Chicago. I believe he has a teaching class somewhere every Monday. Look him up if you're interested.

  • WOW thank you! I had no idea Joe Filisko was in Chicago. I have been looking for a teacher of a high caliber for a while now, seriously haha you might have just made my life right there. I have been trying to work this song out for the last couple of days I got the first section and then the two bar transition into the second section but they still need polishing. My goal is 3 weeks to have it down and passable. Would it insult you if I posted a video response?

  • wowie zowie that was fantastic.

  • Cool! For how long have you been playing? :)

  • Hi there and thanks for your question. I've been playing for about 21 years. It takes a while to get the hang of the instrument and even now I'm learning new things nearly everyday.

  • Amazing!!! you sound like an whole orchestra!!!

  • very nice and enjoyable :D

  • awsome!

  • Outstanding mate ! Cheers !

  • its like you took little walter, and speed it up, and added some notes, and made it a little bit more country. Essentially its boss as hell.

    Keep blowin' ;)

  • Thanks man, that's high praise indeed!

  • Bravo,!!! and you play the harp upside down also, cool.

  • AC/DC RULE

  • hope we liked i dint like it i freakin loved it ur gr8 u should get into a band

  • awesome!!

    congratulations!

  • Areyou planning going to Charlotte st jam again?

  • difficult tabs?? Can you give them??

  • Thanks for the interest. Err this isn't the type of tune you could sensibly. Tab. Well I wouldn't want to try anyway. Way too time consuming! Sorry.

    Lee

  • okay, no problem, keep on playing harmonica...

  • Thanks for the reply, Lee. Any tips on where to start for this country style playing? I've been playing harp for about 10 years now, but not this way. It really gives me the shivers when I hear it so, apart from obsessive practice, any technique tips or nods on who to listen to? (save yourself, of course).

    Thanks for your time.

  • I think the country style is well worth learning as it uses the core strengths of the harp. Portability, playing solo, playing in an acoustic setting with other instruments and of course the sound of the harp itself.

There's lots of amazing historic players such as Sonny Terry or Jaybird Coleman. I'd start with these. Joe Filisko is a fine exponent of the country style. He has a duo with Eric Noden. Search for him/them on YouTube or the web.

    Hope this helps

  • Fantastic stuff, Lee. Really amazing playing. Just a quick question: are you tongue-blocking the all the way there? Thanks, and good luck with your music.

  • Thanks for your feedback and question. On this tune I mostly tongue block, but there is some puckering on the lower notes.

    Lee

  • really great! what harmonica do u use?

  • Thank you.

I use Marine Bands customised by Wes Weston. You can find him on My Space.

  • An inspiration to all us baldy harp players out there!

  • brillaint awesome chops slaps the lot incredible tone.

  • Awesome Lee. Who needs a band when you can accompany yourself like this? So many layers & textures to your playing. See you on Saturday at the NHL Spring Festival.

  • Thanks

The self backing possibilities of the harp are one of the best things about the instrument. These were obviously used extensively by country players, which is the basis for this tune.

Looking forward to the NHL Festival too.

  • 5 stars for ya.

How about an instructional video on that?

    You could make YouTube history.

    Keep harpin my friend.

  • AWESOME SOLO!!!

  • QUICK SOMEONE get the FIRE EXTINGUISHER HE'S ON FIRE!!!!!!!!

  • It's great ! Bravo !

  • this rockt

  • WOW!!I think Mr Gussow have to practice a lot,if he will beat you!Best on youtube!!

  • Nice rythym.

Are you playing the harp backwards or is the video inverted?

  • Fantastic!

  • Thanks for the kind words Adam! Your videos are an inspiration and a landmark for harmonica playing and learning.

    Lee

  • This is really good!! 5

  • that was great stuff,i need more,thanks.

  • Nice one! Great to here mellow tones instead of stabs that most harp players use. Keep me posted saxydeb, ive sent you one of my video's keep sharing Saxydeb

  • Brilliant! Keep em coming!

  • Hi Lee! Great to hear from you and to see you're still playing! I just got back from the Blues Cruise and wish you'd have been there! Kim Wilson got married on the ship! I'll send ya some pix in email. You sound great!! Hope to see you one of these days! Margie from CA.

  • me'n leela totally rock the kitchen to your fat tunes. we totally love you man.

  • As they say in The Blues Brothers, you should "put the band back together!!!"

    x

  • Great stuff Lee, remember you at Spalding Blues Club a few years back.
