  • Im one of those people who start watching a movie and go "shit, stupid credits taking up all my time...+skips+" but if that were the real beginning to a movie i think i'd be more like "shut up guys, can't you tell the credits are on?" ...xD awesome, just awesome!

  • people say it would be impossible to turn this book into a movie, i completely disagree. At its core, the book is about a documentary entitled "The Navidson Record." Why not simply create the navidson record? Sure, making the entire book into a movie would be nearly impossible because all of the different layers and the separate references, not to mention Johnny and the Whalestoe letters, but creating the Navidson Record documentary would be incredible.

  • @lucasB823: thing is, that would take some bite out of the book, because the Navidson Record is NOT supposed to exist.

And if you try to make the entire book into a movie, you'd need something like the combined genius of Alfred Hitchock, David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick, Ryukishi07 (writer) and Mark Danielewski himself to even try and make it. And even then, it'd still probably be a screw-up. Making a movie of the entire book is just impossible. :D

  • Somehow the music reminds me of Home Alone theme. =/

  • HOLY SHIT!!!! I want to become a filmmaker some time in the future and this piece which I just stumbled upon has already earned a higher place in my heart than many professional full-length movies, INSTANTLY. This is unbelievable.

  • This is REALLY well done! The effects extremely professional, and the music is hauntingly suiting to both the book and the video.

However, I think it would have been nice to do the project on The Navidson Record rather than Truant's view. It just might make it a bit easier.

If there were to be a movie made, I'd like to see them cut out the part with Johnny's life entirely. Not because I didn't like it, but because I can't see it working in a movie.

  • hola visiten mi canal comenten y si les gustan las cosas que hago suscribanse pliz....

  • It's amazing how a passing reference in the Yogscast can change Youtube view counts by the thousands.

  • my video sent me :D

  • what is "house of leaves" about? :o btw,Simon sent me x3

  • Yogscast sent me :)

  • @xRodderZz Ha I am indeed familiar with Yogscast, where was this mentioned? It's an early college project of mine.

  • @JeffBillon they had a minecraft 1.8 pre realease where they were in an abandoned mineshaft

simon said "this reminds me of house of leaves...THAT IS NOT A GOOD THING"

  • @xRodderZz When did the Yogscast mention House of Leaves?! I can't believe I missed that!

  • What is this movie about?

  • @krisnarocks the BOOK is about a blindman who writes whats NOT down there. the house is real

  • @1000zing Ow... Creepy!

  • @krisnarocks it is also ver much 8=D

  • Simon sent me

  • @Eman6881 haha same, i'm halfway through the book now and it's really good. pretty scary

  • Simon. That is all.

  • @Emrekpelmu Exactly :p

  • This would be the number one hardest book to ever make into a decent movie.

  • those dang blue squares just list household objects!!!

Oh and great vid, I love that magic.

  • do u hear the roar ?

  • probably the best House of Leaves "trailer" i've seen- no awkward teens attempting to recreate dialogue, just acknowledging that the story IS the book.

    HIGH FIVE.

  • excellent work! catches the eerie feel from the book perfectly!

i agree a flat out hollywood film would destroy the story.. but perhaps an hbo miniseries could work...

  • that was scary

  • The book is brilliant, Danielewski wrote a master piece.

  • thumbs up if this gave you a semi-erection. I love that book.

  • What is the song you used & where can I find it??

  • I think it might be the best book ever written. But it would be a bad idea to even make The Navidson Record because Zampano's book is about about a movie that was never made. If it was made, that would take some of the fun out of it. Also, I carry that book around with me and tuck it into bed at night even though it's been like, three weeks since I finished it.

  • @RainbowSmite525 haha how do u sleep at night with that thing by your side? I can truly say its the only book that has ever given me nightmares, but its also a compliment to the book aswell, never had a work of fiction pull me in like that :)

  • @awiseguy86 I agree. No book or film has ever scared me, that's why someone suggested I read it. I can't say I was scared but I was completely pulled in. However much I like a book I always get tired of reading after 30-50 pages but I literally lost hours reading this book because I never even looked up from the pages. I even missed phone calls because I didn't even hear the phone ringing right beside me because I was just so absorbed. This book does something different to you. I love it!

  • This is probabaly one of the best books EVER written.

  • Awesome. Just started reading the book. this is great! :)

  • nice job!

  • Nope...way too much for a 2 even 3 hour theater movie, but a cable channel series? Then the DVD set? Might generate enough interest to raise the dough. Yes, "Hollywood" would definitely kcuf it up. Has to be in d e p e n d e n t

    l y produced

  • This is awesome. You really took the book's feelings and did a fabulous job transcribing it into a short little video with some killer effects. Once again, awesome job. :)

  • i totally expected to hate this, but man, you pulled it off.

  • Wow! Are you actually going to complete this? Are you in (or were you in) production?

Just wanted to list my favourite parts:

I LOVE the idea of naming crew as "Characters" just like the book does!

Also, is the door you played with supposed to be from an outside perspective of the door that leads elsewhere from the inside?

And the flash and fade out of [the] house at the very end = "Bellisimo!"

  • this. is. awesome.

  • @JeffBillon it could be made into a movie but it would be 3 weeks long :)

  • You are a fucking genius. Just sayin'

  • This is beautiful

  • this is the only video on youtube worth any recognition out of all the (terrible) fan videos. And I agree, it should not be turned into a movie. lol

  • I can totally see this movie happen - Sin City style for the parts of Johnny Truant, ghetto camera for the parts filmed by Navidson. You can have the Navidson Record pop up when Truant is reading the manuscript, and random parts of it pop up while he's out at work or in parties - even his hallucinations would be delightful.

  • im surprised you didnt end it with "this book is not for you"

  • Creepy as fuck......you did a good job.

  • this is really great stuff man...

  • This book + Kid A / Godspeed You! Black Emperor = some scary shit

  • Oh how I wish I could see the real Navidson record..

  • That actually works.

What about a Navidson Record rock opera, music by The Paper Chase?

(supplemented w/ Poe-soundtracked Johnny Truant web series?)

  • This is amazing. Really, really well done.

  • It's true. The only way a movie of House of Leaves could be successful is if Mark Z. had all the say in the production, and if it was broken up into multiple parts. Even then it would be difficult with all of the foot note side stories.

  • did you make this yourself? This is amazing.

  • Good work! I like!

  • Looks more like a TV series intro than a movie intro anyhow.

  • trippy

  • I got the same chills watching this as I got from reading the book. Awesome vid.

  • Freaking cool, but House of Leaves is more a of documentary, it would all be raw footage. This is still cool though.

  • damn dude

did u make that or find it?

it looks really really well done

  • Woah. Amazing.

  • This was really well made. I appreciate your use of video effects and the time and effort that was put into this. I really like how you did this.

  • The structure of the book makes it so convoluted that it'd be damn near impossible to write a film on it. This would make a great opening for it if it was. The only real way that I would think of representing it is to show silent shots of Navidson doing his stuff with the footnotes and Johnny's notes being read over the original "Navidson Report" audio.

This opening still gives me chills, though.

  • Dude, fucking nice job on the effects. Well played ol chap.

  • WoW ! im reading the book right now and its great !!! somebody shuld make a movie from it someday it will be sooooo cool !

  • Beautiful. <3

  • Spine-Tingling. Just like the book :)

  • Except

    This stanza

    does not remain

    entirely

    empty

  • House of Leaves could never properly be made into a movie. There's entirely too many layers. It would have to be upwards of 20 hours long to get everything in. However, The Navidson Record would make one more bitching flick.

  • Personally I think it should be a miniseries, on like HBO or something. Preferably directed by David Lynch. But that's just what I think. I agree a movie would be impossible and not give it justice.

  • that would be pretty amazing, except David Lynch died. :(

therefore i dont think any other director would be able to capture this book completely.

  • @sobe22bune David Lynch isn't dead

  • @flemhead i know. im a retard. srys.

  • very nice graphics, well edited. Very well done

  • i think it could be done. be made into a movie that is.

if done right. it couldnt be over the top.. you would need old equipment and things wold have to be obscure.

  • the few seconds of black at the end sort of freaked me out, i was expecting something like when holloway died to happen hehe

anyway i agree with the fact that this book is impossible to make into a movie

however, if the right person made "the navidson record" into one, it could be sick as hell

  • what kind of software do you use to do this? this is amazing.

  • it would be cool to make the movie described in the book

  • I agree that making a movie out of House of Leaves would be foolish, but I think making a movie out of The Navidson Record might work. As sort of a supplement if you've already read the book, but able to stand on its own - and then you can read it afterwards if you haven't already. Of course it would ruin the bit about the movie not existing. :)

  • I see where you're coming from, "the Navidson Record" could go pretty far, perhaps Johnny's commentary could go pretty far as a movie too

  • @prismacolored There is no mention that the movie does not exist. Johnny only assumes that it doesn't exist because he cannot find it.

  • @prismacolored dude i totaly agree, and just wow, this is an awsome short teaser thing. serrioiusly wow. and you never know, i bet if MZD had 100% control on the movie it might be able to be awsome, though i think too long. the navidson record would be a good length and a stand alone great movie, but only if they made get community and industry and actors to all deny it was ever made or shown. that would be awsome... [i saw a film today, oh boy]

  • @prismacolored I would watch the fuck out of it.

  • This is freakin amazing. I would love to see The Navidson Record actually made into a film. Not the entire HoL book because that would be pretty impossible, but The Navidson Record would be epic.

  • w8 w8 w8 w8

    you made the music too??

    you sir are a god

  • it's not possible and it should never be attempted. the end.

except... maybe they could do a Navidson Record movie, then a Johnny's story movie, and release them side by side, or something. that's the only way I could see it working, ever. but even if they did that, they'd probably bastardize it all anyways.

  • i really enjoy seeing everyone mostly agreeing with what people have to say. its really nice and u hardly never see this.

this book is flat out amazing

    btw, GREAT VIDEO!!! Bravo!

  • favorite book. best video pertaining thus far. hats off

  • I reckon it would have to be relased really complicated, in bits of video, dvd and all sorts of different formats in one bulky package to represent how complex the book is.

There would also be a crap load of supplementary material. I'm not sure how many publishers are willing to market burnt and semi-illegible scientific reports.

  • It would be cool while you're watching, when something was missing, it just went to a blank screen, or cut reel and started right back up again.

  • yeah, making this into a film would be impossible and any director to take on the challenge would just garner lots of haters. the film would have to be so long because there's just so much there...maybe the tv series idea would work but on a commercial-less network

  • Damn ... trying to think of ANY film director brave enough to take on adapting House of Leaves. I do not know one ... alot of unfilmable novels have successfully been made ... but this would be rediculous.

  • I might be just the one to achieve this in a small way...for that is my way of doing things. Allow me to introduce myself- noridirtS .M onJ. and with my shoestring budget, knowledge of the book. I will film one portion of the book with your suggestion no longer than 9 minutes. all I need is 6 hits of LSD and Im good.

  • so tell me a portion you would like to see filmed. I will complete and send to you. And if it sucks I promise never to do another film again. serious.

  • THAT WAS AWESOME!

  • It would be impossible to make house of leaves into a movie. But honestly, they could probably make a TV series out of it. The story is so dense they would be able to get in at least 2 seasons without ruining the whole thing like they did with lost.

  • This was so cool! It's true though that it's impossible to turn House of Leaves into a movie without ruining it. On the other hand, 5 1/2 minute hallway, Exploration #4. And Possibly the Navidson record can. Since they're supposed to be movies.

  • Amazing work!

  • Great book and I agree on the fact that I would not like it to be turned into a movie, especially if Hollywood got a hold of it.

I WOULD, however, like to see a documentary style short video of the 5&1/2 minute hallway.

  • @brewskhee

God dammit, I agree. Unfortunately, I no longer live at this house, and I'm in NYC now...you'd be hard pressed to find a good location to shoot for 5&1/2 min hallway.

I think I could do something pretty badass with it though...so you'll be sure to see it if I ever get something done, between work etc.

  • BTW, this intro video was great. Didn't get to say that in my first post. The effects were awesome. I don't know much about video editing, but I work with photoshop alot, and this really shows talent.

  • @brewskhee If Kubrick were alive, he could do it right. No one else though, I agree.

  • @JimmyDThing

I agree, however, with Hollywood these days it would never see the light of day considering the budget this film would require (especially for Kubrick) and the size of the target audience it would attract. And if Hollywood did get their hands on this with Kubrick - it would be edited, shortened, and changed so much that I wouldn't care to see it.

BTW, Kubrick is one of my favorite directors, maybe even the top.

  • @brewskhee Totally agree. Kubrick would end up murdering someone if he were making films today.

  • i have to say that this was actually amazingly good considering i do NOT want this book turned into a movie just so all the little crazed fans latch on to it.

there's something important about a book being just that...a book.

  • Exactly what I was thinking. This piece of literature beauty would be destroyed if it was turned into a movie. There is no way a movie could capture the pure emotion from this book. I would love to see short documentaries though.

  • i completely agree.

but recreating the actual films, like the Explorations or the Five and a Half Minute Hallway might be nice.

  • HOLY SHIT M-FUCKER!!!

    i think

    that

I just jizzed in my pants.

    HOLY FUCK.

    this is amazing.

  • do u really think this is a real intro?

  • How the heck did you do that?? That's some crazy special effects.

  • @Tzareth

    magic

  • @JeffBillon

In all seriousness, what programs did you use - I want to make fanmade openings, but I don't know where to start

  • This is freaking pure awesome geniusness. With skill.

  • You win forever.

  • WHATS THE MUSIC???

  • The music is just collected background noise from the night this was made mixed over some ambient synth action. It's not really meant to be terribly important, just slightly uneasy.

  • Now this is how you do an intro to a film

  • Comment removed

  • that intro looks scary as shit. i nearly pooped myself. holy fuck

  • That's such an epic intro. I wish they'd make a movie and use that.

  • This would be very fun to put together. It's not awesome, but satisfying and a very catchy idea.

  • Outstanding work, excellent use of typography and bringing the feel of the layout of the book to the screen.

  • I think you could do better with the soundtrack.

  • Yes this came out to be really good.. I was getting chills from it

  • Good job adapting the typography from the book to the short.

  • This was great. Easily the best of the faux intros on youtube. The music fit the video and the book perfectly, and the visual representation of the words was a genius move.

I'd love to see someone try to create "The Five and a Half Minute Hallway" and "Exploration #4" as they're represented in the first chapter of the book. I think those would be great videos.

  • I second the recreation of the two short films from the book.

  • was "faux" really necessary?

  • I wonder if David Lynch could ever make a film out of House of Leaves... it would probably be very abstract and wouldn't really resemble the novel but it's a tempting thought nonetheless...

  • Have you done that for a College-work or something like that?

  • very well done. captures the feeling of the book perfectly. if only it actually was a movie

  • oh is thaat what the book is called?! I have been trying to tell people about his book, bt all I've been able to say was,"All I know is that it's a crazy book about ...(kinda long and don't wanna ruin it for anyone)... and the word 'house' is always is blue." great book, haven't read it, but my sister showed me bits and pieces.

  • what is this book about?

  • A guy finds a book written by a crazy old man about a film that doesn't actually exist about a house that is bigger on the inside than the outside. Simple really.

  • it is seriously amazing. i don't read all that often, but this is a must read book

  • that raised the hairs on my balls

  • Wow, very well made. Captured the feeling of the book.

    ~Link4000z

    Doug

  • Beautiful

  • Wow, this video rocked. I just noticed however, isn't it Zampanò? (With the accent tilted the other way.)

  • Lol. Yes, you are right. One day, when i'm feeling really bored, i'll pull open the comp and fix it...maybe convert it to HD

  • Oh My Goodness.

That was crazy, i love the effects, and the animations!

that was so good, well done.

  • SUCH a great interpretation i really really loved it. just like everyone else, i'm against it being made into a movie since its an exploration of the literature medium BUT this is really well done, congrats!

  • Another potentially great clip neutralized by mediocre, run of the mill music. Was that Really the feeling you got from reading this book, translated into music? OK, then.

  • I thought that the author of this video chose (and composed?) the music extremely well. Say what you will though, phadde.

  • HANDS DOWN, the BEST book I have ever read. Danielewski is a total genius.

  • It's an excellent piece of experimental fiction, for sure! I can't say that his other books capture me quite as well by any means, but the man does write in a very unique style.

  • I agree with the other books. I had a very hard time with Only Revolutions.

  • Some bits here even reminded me of Hard Candy's intro.

    Which is good.

  • I'm still glad there will never be a feature length film based on this book, but goddamn these are nice intro credits. Great work.

  • Comment removed

  • Ahh!!! Why did it have to stop there?! brilliant work!

  • very stunning. the work of a brilliant man

  • Stunning work. One of the best I've ever seen.

  • this book is AMAZING

  • this book is fucked up

  • So so so awesome. I praise whoever had the gulls and talent to create this. Really.

    This was awesome.

  • I should probaly update this with a HQ version

  • the Nadvison Record is real the author knows this

  • why does everybody say they won´t be able to make a movie out of "house of leaves"? they did "the lord of the rings"! they just need a good script and an editor like jeffbillon. great job, jeff!

  • You can't compare House of the Leaves to Lord of the Rings!

LotR is a traditional story that proceeds chronologically while HotL is a complex unconventional collage of text that can be only interpreted from a subjective point of view. You can't simply think about the cast and the special effects, which were the main concern in the making of LotR.

  • of course your objection is right.

but 10 years ago they said: "it will never ever be possible to put lotr on screen." but finally they did it - so the technical reqirements are fulfilled.

concerning the subjective interpretation of the book i can only tell you that this is the worst problem with every film adaption of any book. because everybody reads a book in his/her own way.

to my opinion the real challenge is to turn the experimental written lines into a real good movie.

    part 1

  • part 2

but have a look around on youtube: here are so many talented young moviemakers. i am pretty sure either one or the other guys have got really good ideas to turn Hol into a movie. WHEN is the question that remains to be answered.

  • Good point! I personally liked LotR movies. However, the narrative of the original books was not very complex... Just epic in proportions.

I think it would be very interesting to see House of Leaves transformed into movie format. But I fear that much would be lost from the original content. There are many layers and visual clues that can be experienced only by reading and turning the pages. It would be a real challenge to make the movie into something more than just a plain horror film. :)

  • once again: right you are!

You have to find somebody to face this big challenge. but i think there are a lot of people itching to deal with this problem. and you have to make sure that this person is really able to solve this exercise.

the best example how NOT to make it is the "nine gates" (hope this is the english title) with johnny depp. the book "the club dumas" was written by a. perez-reverte and its really complex - like "Hol". but they turned it into a plain horror film. what a pity!

  • Hmm, I definitely have to check out this book you mentioned!

If they successfully made a good movie based on House of Leaves, I would be very excited.

Right now I mostly feel reserved about the possibility of a HoL movie because I was so delightfully puzzled by the book. Mainstream films tend to simplify things instead of further puzzling the audience. Then again, a low budged indie film might not be able to technically convey the physical depth of the house. I guess it remains to be seen.

  • agreed!

    T

    I

    M

    E

    will tell. ;o)

  • the lord of the rings is one story, progressing one constant rate of time. house of leaves is several stories going on at once, and there's no way a movie could capture the arrangement of the text along with many other things.

  • yeah, it's pretty much impossible. I'll be very surprised if someone actually manages to pull it off.

  • Very Well Edited, Nice upload... I really can't wait until someone can pull off a shot-for-shot 'the five and a Half Minute hallway'. That would be... the shit? Tops? Can't find the right Adjective.

  • The Navidson Record realy exist.......but i tkink its made after the book..............

  • I think they should make a film out of The Navidson Record. That would be great, really.

But not of the House of Leaves. That's impossible.

  • understandable. reading my comment now, i realize that i ought to have been more clear as it does read as though i am putting this video down. I would never intentionally insult someone's work, though adaptations of others work into film just plain bothers me.

  • My thoughts are just as valid as anyone elses. My thoughts on the book are what they are. I did not mean to personally offend anyone. They were just my thoughts, as I thought that this was to be a place of free thought sharing. Though I am not saying that the creator of this piece is arrogant but a film of the Navidson Record would be a terrible travesty. MZD would tell you that.
