A 94 year old woman on my road recently came out of hospital and found squatters in her house, they broke her wheel chair and her stair support system. They also smashed all her ornaments and burned her photos and memories.

This woman has worked all her life for that and they just come and ruin it? I think you would have to be a pretty sick person to justify such actions and for that reason i condem people like you, who promote such unlawful actions which are denounced by the majority of us.

Was there NO liaison with Social Services? The local authority to check the lady was being cared for and her property was being looked after with ADDED SECURITY by the very fact the lady was admitted to the hospital?

Were the local POLICE informed (who would have notified Traffic & Area Cars + Beat Police + PCSOs) - as they should have been - of potential SECURITY/INSECURITY issues - by "friendly, caring neighbours" - if any of them saw the Ambulance or were aware of the Hospital Admission?

Empty homes contribute to the shortage. Lower prices for property is good news for those of us who do proper work for a living rather than speculate on property. Homes should be seen as exactly that - homes, not investments and a way to make easy money.

If there's a valid reason for leaving a house empty for a long period, ask (or even pay) someone to look after it, rent it to someone you trust, or sell it - there are plenty of people looking for homes. Empty houses distort the property market

I think it's fair to say that owners of long empty homes have done more to create the housing shortage than immigration has.

Newspapers focus on the rare cases, ignoring the ones that have been empty for years. I know of no-one who's been made permanently homeless by squatters.  There was a recent case in the papers, but the occupants were former tennants who stopped paying rent, not (as they claimed) "squatters" at all.

"Property Rights" are bunkum when the majority of people are priced out of the opportunity of actually buying property.

@762SLR762 All householders need to do if their properties get tresspassed is to obtain a Court Order. The court will oblige, unless there is a good reason not to. It is sensible way to stop householders from putting themselves (or their dogs) in danger by trying to physically remove the squatters themselves - in the same way as people being expected to call the fire brigade to put out a large fireinstead of trying to do it themselves.

@762SLR762 Empty homes helped cause the housing problems we now face - they reduce supply, so that supply cannot met demand, thus pushing prices out of the reach of most British people. The banking crash was largely due to lenders giving people mortgages they could not afford to pay back, as a result of these stupid property prices. Empty homes are also a blight on the neighbourhood, esp if they are not maintained. No man is an island.

The post left in the small mansion that my mate and his housemates squatted date from 2004 I believe - but they only squatted it this year, 2010. Hardly kicking anyone out, were they? Yes, they're in contact with the owner. Also, the 'law-abiding' neighbours' kids had been stealing roof tiles off it for ages (not sure what for) and probably broke in many times. Damaging the property through water damage. Now it's in better condition. Criminals? Not because of squatting this unused house.

They were laughing and smiling at the cameras and refused to leave. The police wouldn't get rid of them and the guy has to take them to court. If a property is Squatted [Adversely Possessed in legal parlance] and you are a residential owner, clearly it is up to you as the holder of the Freehold Title to assert your interest...If the owner can do that, then a date will be fixed for a County Court hearing

District Judges, Deputy District Judges & Circuit Judges are only too aware of the competing interests & what should or should not take precedence... so things are NOT as you might have thought, automatically favouring any Squatter!

I will admit that I don't know much about it but say I've gone on holiday, come back and found that the house I own has had the locks changed and someone new is living there. I would then be homeless and have no access to any of my possessions. I can appeciate that it may be a different matter if it is a building that isn't usually occupied.
