Well. some interesting comments here. Yes, Lincoln was overly idealized as are many of our noble historical figures. One problem I am seeing with the comments here is that we are judging by the thought of our day instead of his ie, the peeps and attitudes back then were so different. Racism was ingrained in that society and don't forget Lincoln was a politician, hence having to speak to engage his crowd.

Also, I think it is illegal for the federal government to occupy a state with its military without the approval of the state. I dont think that the Conferate States of America have ever given consent for the forces that are still here from the War of Southern Independence to remain here, which they do. You remember correctly AGrunt7. The Declaration of Independence (our declaration of "succession" from Great Britton) states it clearly. Our forefathers, who understood oppressive government (King George) well, meant for none of us to again be subjected to tyrannical government and the right of succession was to be the check against it. Lincoln trampled that document (and the Constitution) and again reduced us to mere "subjects" of an unchecked system where we remain till this day.

It definitely was NOT a crime for a State to leave the Union in 1860. It was allowed in the Articles Of Confederation as a deterrent to tyrannical British-style government. That is why Jefferson Davis was never tried for his "crimes". Yankees knew the Southern States had done nothing against the Constitution and were afraid to chance a trial. They would have only proven THEMSELVES guilty of THEIR crimes. So he was "pardoned". Don't whiz on other people's legs and tell them it is raining.

Secession is legal. A contract says what someone can do. It does not list EVERYTHING someone cannot do or else the document would be as long as the history of the world. The constitution lists powers that the sovereign states deligate (allow) to the federal government. The states are superior to the consolidated government, and have the authority to leave a voluntary union. You can't even spell secede!

This video tells the truth. The writ of habeus corpus can be suspended mind you...... by Congress. It is found in Article 1 Section 9 as a specific power of Congress under specific criteria: Rebellion and Invasion. Secession itself is not rebellion, it is the right of association and disassociation for matters between peoples.

There is no likewise clause in Article 2, which specifies the powers of the Presidency.

the suspension of habeus corpus was legal at the time Lincoln temporarily took it away. the constitution states that in times of civil war or uprising it is the president's right to suspend habeus corpus.
