Lee Dorsey! Allen Toussaint! The Meters! All natch'ly N'Orleans & priceless! Anyone know exactly what year, label, 7", LP, this song was released by Lee Dorsey? Please advise & thank you for posting this gem - Robert Palmer did Lee proud... DAVEDJ
@Multi1628...Lee Dorsey's version was released, in 1971, on Polydor 14055. The B-side of the single was "Tears, Tears And More Tears". Don't know whether or not it was also released as an album track, at that time.
I agree w/other comments;Lee Dorsey is forever fine and maybe Robert is just another great advance in style and music, love 'em both for different reasons, but great song as well.
Hope Mr. Dorsey didn't spend a lot for that album cover's photo session...he should have said "HOLY SHIT!" when he seen it in stores looking like that!
The album pictured in the background was a compilation of his hits released by Arista Records back in 1985. Lee died in December 1986, so he may have had a peek at that LP in his lifetime?!?
Lee wasn't covering Allen Toussaint, he did the original recording. Toussaint was his producer, and wrote most of Dorsey's tunes specifically for him.
This is awesome! Like Mike D said, "...And everything I do is funky like Lee Dorsey."

Toussaint is a musical genius who really enjoys writing for special talents like Dorsey. Dorsey is tremendously underrated.

The connection is the writer of the song, Allen Tousaint.

Actually, he was covering Lee Dorsey who was covering Allan Toussaint, the originator.
