people like to call foreman a dumb slugger, but he had mad skills. what other fighter, in boxing history, could land knock out blows with either hand, with every punch? even his jab was like a battering ram, it was the punch that broke his opponent's nose in the olympics and stunned moore before the KO straight right.
another thing of note is his combinations, at 2:00 we see a wicked body body head combination the likes of which tyson, dempsey, and joe louis used to put guys away with.
@Robstailey Thank you, Rob, for stating what I have been trying to say for some time. Sure, George wasn't a dancer. Duh. But to say he was just a brute with no boxing skills is just inobservant (yep, it's a word, believe it or not) and plain wrong. There are many different ways to exhibit skills and smarts in the ring, and Foreman practiced several.
@Robstailey I agree. Dumb slugger or not, what's important are results. His style worked for him. Won his first 40 professional fights. Only lost 5 out of 81 his whole career. He fought some nobodys at the start of his career and at the start of his comeback but fought mostly decent/good/great fighters. Beat Joe Frazier. Twice! Was champion of the world. Ali beat him, okay. But then George became champion again at age 45. Anyone who tries to downplay Foreman is nuts or in denial in my opinion.
@Quidtucenam Indeed. You stand in front of George or get caught in his "web," kiss your ass goodbye! That video on the right (towards the bottom), the one with Rocky Sekorski... Rocky can take a punch! But even then he was taking a brutal beating.
Foreman missed huge in most of his punches. Altough it's obvious that Roman was there just for the show. Not his stance nor his record were backing up his presence in the same ring as Big George.
FOREMAN WAS GREAT OR... I SHOULD SAY HE HAD GREAT POWER, WITHOUT THAT POWER HE WOULD HAVE BEEN ANOTHER ONE IN THE HEAP, WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE ABOUT HIM WAS THE WAY HE PUSHED THE FIGHTERS AND THEN HIT THEM, ALSO HE FOULED OR SHOULD I SAY , HIT THEM WHEN THEY WE'RE DOWN, HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN DISQUALIFIED
Foreman got an amazing power but thats all he got no skills absolutely well in addition his chin was not that bad but the rest man he looks like he never had an amateur career or boxing experience just swinging his way to the win.
@Cravle Because he barely had an amateur career. He had something like 20 fights, Olympics and then pro. But little known fact - the man could box. Even Ali acknowledges that in his autobiography. George is just awkward - as is Ali. But when you're a freak of nature like that, it's not really necessary to box. You just swing until they fall.
Foreman's really cranking up those bombs here. Never seen this fight before, though years ago I read a little about it and that punch with Roman on the floor. Something to do with the IRS, but Foreman never fought a title fight in the US in his first reign. Guess it made him a true WORLD champion.
GOOD GOD!!! Foreman was trying to KILL em. Just emagine this Foreman vs Tyson when he had Cus D'Amado Teddy Atlas and Kevin Rooney. Man that would be a dangerous scary fight.
@90EMC Look at how wild and open he was if Lyle nearly KO's him imagine Tyson staying in the pocket and unloading his equally powerful but twice as quick combos
@Richdanahuff See that's where you're wrong buddy. The Foreman that Lyle fought was not the same Foreman in this fight up until Ali. After Foreman fought Ali, he was never the same. Yeh you 're right though. Tyson definitely had incredible hand speed and head movement along with his power. His technique was very different from other Heavy weights. It would be very interesting to see if Foreman would be able to keep Tyson from inside by pushing him back like he did when he beat down Frazier.
@90EMC What do you mean by buddy?? I know that Foreman lost his sense of invincibility. It wouldn't have mattered Foreman never faced another guy with power his size, Tyson was the bigger better, faster more powerful version of Floyd Patterson.
@Richdanahuff Yes that may be true. All the guys Foreman had fought against was not as strong as he was. Tyson may be the only one who come close as equal strength. You can't forget that height and reach can be a big factor if used right. If you look at the fight with Frazier, who about the same height as Tyson, Foreman kept pushing him back from getting inside and continued to strike him with power shots that was hurting him badly. Frazier or Norton could rarely get good shots to him.
@90EMC Agreed 100% height, reach, strength and all the natural advantages a skilled fighter can use to add to his dominance is a huge factor. If you watched Frazier you know his defense was not skilled per sey his defense was really constant head movement just constant motion. Tyson was more deliberate, Foreman never had good skills he swung wildly until something landed he was as accurate as he was gifted to be, in reality Foreman never really learned to box.
@90EMC Foreman was so much stronger and hit so hard he was never really threatened he never had to learn to box, in his prime. When he fought Ali he learned what a great boxer could do and he saw what he had never taken the time to master his early career, and even the Frazier fight were too easy what lesson had he learned to make him go back to basics?? So given that Tyson was well schooled on maximizing what he had as far as lack of size, imagine Foremans lack of skill vs Tysons prime skills
@Richdanahuff Foreman was not "out-boxed" by Ali. That is a total myth. He was out-thought by a master of mindgames with unbelievable heart, courage and determination. He was not outboxed. Big George was dead by the 5th round. Charlie Polite could've taken him out by the 8th round.
@90EMC Imagine Foreman's wide swinging for the fences with a guy like Tyson slipping and when some did land Tyson showed he had one hell of a chin, he was built to take a few shots. Foreman pushed for range but when he was swinging he was within range and that is what Tyson was a master at punching in between the opponents rhythmic punching. Once he started landing it was on, usually could stop a guy with 1 punch but if not he was schooled to throw combos.
@Richdanahuff True ture. It is good to see that somone know their stuff about boxing and not just speaking opinions that is not logical. I once stated that Norton and Frazier couldn't get any good shots from Foreman. With that said, Tyson was definitely more agile and stronger than the two. Which would give Foreman more trouble. Tyson was in his prime when he had Teddy Atlas, Cus D'Amato, and Kevin Rooney in his corner. At that time, there's a 100% chance that tyson could have beatin anyone who
@Richdanahuff has come through boxing. There has not been one fighter that come though who had his speed and head movement along with his power that could get inside the way he did. He was so well trained by the three that it was to the point where it seem impossible to stop. I doubt that Buster Douglas would have beatin Tyson if he had them three guys in his corner. The only thing I fault them for is by not teaching him how to get inside, throw combinations, and then get back out.
@Richdanahuff That technique would have prevented his oppnents from clinching him everytime he tried to get in. Foreman MAY would have tried to do that also. It still may have not been enough to stop Tyson. That is true when you said Foreman is a wild swinger lol. I thought I was the only one who noticed that. It does look like he wasn't really trained. Thank God he wasnt. I agree and understand everything your stating. I'm just curious to see what the match-up would be like between the two.
@90EMC Me too, My opinion is had Foreman been a well schooled fighter he may have been the greatest fighter to ever walk the earth and a Tyson match may never have been discussed nahh it would have because I think Tyson was that special. Imagine Foreman with a good jab using his size and physical gifts to work a fighter and throwing sharp straight punches and a decent defense, unbeatable IMO.
@capablemachine Exactly this KO shouldn't be looked at as a Foreman myth builder but in reality much of his early career was built on fighters this small and smaller.
you got to be a really really good and tough heavyweight to tell foreman that he dont hit hard, which i think i´d read somewhere he did! as far as i know probably the stupiest thing you could have told a young foreman before a fight lol :D
