Benkei was also an ally of the historical character, Yoshitsune, whom Waka was based off. His name comes from Yoshitsune's childhood name, Ushiwakamaru.

When Ushiwakamaru was a young man (I would guess early twenties) he was walking down a bridge playing a flute his mother gave him. He came across Benkei, who challenged him to gain his 1000th sword. Ushiwakamaru easily beat him but lost his flute in the river. Benkei swore undying loyalty to Ushiwakamaru. (Obviously I've simplified the story)

lol, Benkei, must be a pretty common Japanese name for these feudal era games. I say that because the name is in Genjil Dawn of the Samurai as well.

I never really got how everyone in Okami just expects this wolf walking around to understand what they're saying, and do what they say. Pretty odd.
