It's about 20 volunteers that leave Earth to go look for a new planet because it was getting too crowded on Earth. One of the volunteers was planning on marrying his girlfriend when they got back. They left in the year of 39, and they came back in the year of 39, except 100 years later. His girlfriend was dead, and he still had the rest of his life to life.
it involves time dilapidation (as you approach the speed of light you gain mass which affects the flow of time iself slowing it to nearly a 100:1 rate) which is why he has travelled but a year thought earth has ages 100 years.
God bless all those at Brixton that night. I understand cos it went down well there it was added to the set list. End result one of the best live songs ever was performed on the QPR tour.
He looks made up that the fans knew it.
I think the on his website he said his 12 string has the thicker and thinner strings reversed so the octave sound is reversed when strummed. Must read it again.
my friends, queen raised me up... but I gotta tell ya... '39 was planned cos I was at their concert in Milan and he played,too... God save the Queen...
this was the first gig of the tour at Brixton Academy. the reason it was on the set list for the rest of the tour was because of this gig and the crowd reaction to Bri playing the being of the riff
Made me laugh, totally unplanned and just layed back fun. The crowd were totally in control. Brian was frogmarched through this song, but was happy to oblidge. Thanks for posting.
I am so glad that the Brixton guys frogmarched Brian through the song and got it on the set list for the tour.......
A brilliant song performed by its creator. I heard Fred sing it at Wembley (Empire Pool as it was then LOL) but this is one of those few occasions when Fred didn't do a song justice. Listen to Live Killers then this. God bless yer Dr. May...and save the Whales..
what does Brian say at the end??

That's the basic outline.

Why wasn't Brian singing at the beginning?
gitarocska 3 years ago
He wasn't meant to be singing, the crowd just started singing so he had to go along with it.
At least, I'm pretty sure that's what's happened.
jessicamadq 3 years ago 3
But why wasn't meant Brian singing? Did the crowd start too early?
gitarocska 3 years ago
I think he was only playing the intro to 39 to be an intro to something else, and that's why he had to just carry on playing when the crowd sang.

Sheer magic. Plus it's adorable to see a baffled Brian May. ;-)

It seems as time goes by, this song just gets more and more popular. Shame it wasn't released as a single. Best song ever.
