I'm glad I went to High school in a fairly liberal suburb. They didn't do a fantastic job teachin us about evolution but they never taught us anything that was just flat out wrong.
in my 'bible as literature class' in high school, my teacher started explaining how there are some organisms that are too complex to have evolve...so i raised my hand and explained the flaws of irreducible complexity and pretty much refuted all the arguments he brought up ...it made me feel good :>
and i have people like AronRa, Richard Dawkins, DonExodus and Ken Miller to thank
AronRa makes excellent points as usual. Another thing I'd like to note: I don't know why, but he's very easy to understand, even for someone whose native language isn't english (me). I got used to listening to english speakers but haven't found anyone that comes as clear as Aron... Adopt me, man!
BTW, there are a lot of good teachers, even in Texas, but who wants to work a job where you can't get any respect from kids or adults, either? If you drive away the good ones, the honest ones, you get the ideologues.
@TheSpankymonkey Maybe "lack of abuse" would've been a better term in this context. I value the respect of people whose opinions I value. And no, I'm not a teacher.
Okay, who are those two guys Richard Haynes mentions at the end? Richie Cunningham and Aleister Crowley? (football player and occultist???) ...where those the guys he mentioned? O.o
When my son started his HS Biology Class in Jefferson County, WV, his teacher had written in big letters across the top of the chalkboard "GOD CREATED EVERYTHING". My son dared to question this man regarding his creationist stance, and whether it was appropriate to have a creationist teaching biology due to his inherent bias. From that day on, my son was discriminated against in the class. This same teacher would lead morning prayer sessions in front of the school with fundie students.
@ogbobbydee Should have reported him. That is completely against policy for teachers to express religious views in class and discriminate against others for it.
@SkeksisRule We did; but he was tenured, and also somewhat "connected" in the county. Believe me, the other teachers (and many parents) disliked his policies. But he had a cadre of very strident and loyal Christian Conservative acolytes who liked his approach as well. It's unfortunate because this man was apparently born again only after he started teaching biology. In my humble opinion, if his new found religious beliefs conflicted so badly with his science, he should have found a new vocation.
If Christians think they're so right, then why do they have to lie and be so disingenuous about their arguments? I've met some of these young earth creationists and the things they say and tactics they use are really quite alarming. They only fight against teaching evolution because it contradicts their book of fables. Many of them would be glad to impose a theocracy on the rest of us. We can't stand idle and let ignorant fundamentalists put progress in reverse.
@SkeksisRule MANY christians accept the fact that evolution occurs and the theory of evolution explains it. so lets not make blanket terms like "christians" in this. "real christians" accept the facts of the world such as evolution. on the other polar end is the "fake christians" who must lie about what happens in the world in order to maintain their beliefs, they obviously aren't real christians because they must reject real things in order to hold onto their religion.
@greycloud24 I know not all Christians are dishonest and disingenuous, a lot of my friends are wonderful honest caring people who happen to be Christians, but with that said, I really don't see a lot of the good Christians people denouncing all the crazy fundamentalist. This is a real question, If you're not going clean up your own house, how are non-Christians supposes to tell you guys apart? My friends are rational people and they do denounce the crazies, but their churches don't...
@ctypro96706 "on the other polar end is the "fake christians" who must lie about what happens in the world in order to maintain their beliefs, they obviously aren't real christians because they must reject real things in order to hold onto their religion."
HAHAHHAHA. The whole idea of religion and faith is that you must reject reality to hold on to your beliefs. Faith is not grounded in reality, it is a mere belief. Magical deities, angels, demons, miracles...etc. The bible is full of it.
@greycloud24 First of all, your statement that "true" Christians accept evolution falls under the the "no true Scotsman" fallacy. I am well aware that there are some Christians that accept evolution, but they are in the minority. That is a fact, since polls show that the majority of people in this country are not sure or do not believe in evolution at all. Second, as I mentioned in my comment I was speaking about fundamentalists and young earth creationists. I did not make a blanket statement.
@SIayerfan84 Yeah, right like I'm stupid enough to think a coward like you would give her actual number out on the internet. Probably some poor sap your dad pimped you out to when you were 8. I got your little impersonation account closed shut down though, didn't I? Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving day :)
@SkeksisRule lol I'm the coward? Do I hide my channel or have a friend lock turned on? That is my number. Call me and I'll give you my location unless you're too much of a bitch. Which impersonation account? Everyone of my accounts is an impersonation. You have no idea who you're talking too. You have been talking to me for months without even knowing it until I decided to make it obvious. I even have two accounts as friends of yours and 1 sub. I'm gonna find you for real. Always 1 step ahead
Re: "Richard Haynes, AKA "Brother Richard", former mega-church minister with a B.S. in Biblical Studies", lol I'm very sure he does have B.S. in BS: lots of it.
I had a science teacher once tell me (in an accelerated class, no less) that the blue part of the flame of a candle was the hottest...her reasoning was that "blue" stars are the hottest!
I got kicked out of class for using a lighter and a matchstick to prove her wrong.
@Gooberlicious54, actually, the dim blue OUTER part of a candle flame (near the tip) IS the hottest. It’s blue because the carbon is being completely combusted and oxygenated (forming carbon dioxide), not incompletely (forming carbon monoxide). The brightest part is NOT the hottest, and is bright because of uncombusted soot particles incandescing yellow-hot.
The blue INNER part (the part immediately surrounding the wick) isn’t very hot at all in comparison.
That's nothing. I had a science teacher who once said gravity was caused by Earth's magnetism and we are attracted to it because of the iron in our blood. That same teacher also said that bats are a single species of featherless bird.
@blazereef I wish I WAS minira =) -and had AronRa as my dad at that age. Thankfully however despite my Catholic parents I was in the opposition position: my teachers knew their shit and taught evolutionary biology as was known at the time.
Its got to be frustrating for AronRa to try and debate and fight with the fundies on the BoE. But its absoluately critical that high standards for things like science be maintained or else the soceity has no future.
It's funny (⸮) that those Tx BoE chumps think it necessary to add 'critical thinking' to one speciic domain of education only. Quite frankly critical thinking education should probably run as an autonomous short class alongside all others, perhaps even as part of a basic philosophy class.
@jmm1233 said "i surprised the kids in school don't revolt and form a union to demand not to be taught by idoit teachers".
It's probably because they learn, through experience, that "resistance is futile". Kids will learn that minors don't have rights; they are not recognized by law as Citizens, just chattel of their parents and The State. Um, well, even adults are considered chattel by The State, but that's a different thread.
Welcome to the real world, kids. Life sucks. Get used to it.
@MrDorkusMaximus I think it differs according to school. I remember having a really terrible German teacher all through grammar school. The class under me actually revolted when they were supposed to have her teach them - went to the headmistress and asked for someone else to teach them German. It completely blew my mind when I heard that. Oh and they succeeded
How? The Children in this country really do not have rights. They are under the auspices of their parents unless the parents have proven they are unfit to be parents.
A child cannot do that. Their parents, however, can.
@REBMike1: You want to know who McLeroy is? He is a dentist from Bryan, TX, elected to the state school board; you can find him in wikipedia, "Don McLeroy".
Yes! Just when I thought my friend and me were the only freethinkers in Georgia I find out about Richard Haynes. I'm only 15 right now but hopefully I'll become as much of an activist as he is.
@DrZaious Such an important topic based on what your children will be educated on in school and all you can do is take issue with something asininely trivial.
Is it just me or does Richard Haynes look like a blonde Al Gore?

Thankfully, I had really good high school science teachers. I mean, they were just downright the intellectual soul of the school.
The math teachers tended to be pedants. The government teacher was a self-important popinjay. English teachers were English teachers.
But the science teachers? They actually had educations.
Without them, that school would have sunk into mediocrity.

I'm glad I went to High school in a fairly liberal suburb. They didn't do a fantastic job teachin us about evolution but they never taught us anything that was just flat out wrong.
zzyzx0788 1 year ago
this reminds me...
in my 'bible as literature class' in high school, my teacher started explaining how there are some organisms that are too complex to have evolve...so i raised my hand and explained the flaws of irreducible complexity and pretty much refuted all the arguments he brought up ...it made me feel good :>
and i have people like AronRa, Richard Dawkins, DonExodus and Ken Miller to thank

If you drive away the good ones, the honest ones, you get the ideologues.
tctheunbeliever 1 year ago
@tctheunbeliever - Obviously respect is important for you eh.
TheSpankymonkey 1 year ago
@TheSpankymonkey Maybe "lack of abuse" would've been a better term in this context. I value the respect of people whose opinions I value. And no, I'm not a teacher.

This same teacher would lead morning prayer sessions in front of the school with fundie students.
ogbobbydee 1 year ago 4
@ogbobbydee Should have reported him. That is completely against policy for teachers to express religious views in class and discriminate against others for it.
SkeksisRule 1 year ago
@SkeksisRule We did; but he was tenured, and also somewhat "connected" in the county. Believe me, the other teachers (and many parents) disliked his policies. But he had a cadre of very strident and loyal Christian Conservative acolytes who liked his approach as well. It's unfortunate because this man was apparently born again only after he started teaching biology. In my humble opinion, if his new found religious beliefs conflicted so badly with his science, he should have found a new vocation.
ogbobbydee 1 year ago
If Christians think they're so right, then why do they have to lie and be so disingenuous about their arguments? I've met some of these young earth creationists and the things they say and tactics they use are really quite alarming. They only fight against teaching evolution because it contradicts their book of fables. Many of them would be glad to impose a theocracy on the rest of us. We can't stand idle and let ignorant fundamentalists put progress in reverse.
SkeksisRule 1 year ago 2
@SkeksisRule MANY christians accept the fact that evolution occurs and the theory of evolution explains it. so lets not make blanket terms like "christians" in this. "real christians" accept the facts of the world such as evolution. on the other polar end is the "fake christians" who must lie about what happens in the world in order to maintain their beliefs, they obviously aren't real christians because they must reject real things in order to hold onto their religion.
greycloud24 1 year ago
@greycloud24 I know not all Christians are dishonest and disingenuous, a lot of my friends are wonderful honest caring people who happen to be Christians, but with that said, I really don't see a lot of the good Christians people denouncing all the crazy fundamentalist. This is a real question, If you're not going clean up your own house, how are non-Christians supposes to tell you guys apart? My friends are rational people and they do denounce the crazies, but their churches don't...
ctypro96706 1 year ago
@ctypro96706 "on the other polar end is the "fake christians" who must lie about what happens in the world in order to maintain their beliefs, they obviously aren't real christians because they must reject real things in order to hold onto their religion."
HAHAHHAHA. The whole idea of religion and faith is that you must reject reality to hold on to your beliefs. Faith is not grounded in reality, it is a mere belief. Magical deities, angels, demons, miracles...etc. The bible is full of it.
SkeksisRule 1 year ago 2
@greycloud24 First of all, your statement that "true" Christians accept evolution falls under the the "no true Scotsman" fallacy. I am well aware that there are some Christians that accept evolution, but they are in the minority. That is a fact, since polls show that the majority of people in this country are not sure or do not believe in evolution at all. Second, as I mentioned in my comment I was speaking about fundamentalists and young earth creationists. I did not make a blanket statement.

Which impersonation account? Everyone of my accounts is an impersonation. You have no idea who you're talking too. You have been talking to me for months without even knowing it until I decided to make it obvious. I even have two accounts as friends of yours and 1 sub. I'm gonna find you for real. I had a science teacher once tell me (in an accelerated class, no less) that the blue part of the flame of a candle was the hottest...her reasoning was that "blue" stars are the hottest!
I got kicked out of class for using a lighter and a matchstick to prove her wrong.
Gooberlicious54 1 year ago
@Gooberlicious54, actually, the dim blue OUTER part of a candle flame (near the tip) IS the hottest. It’s blue because the carbon is being completely combusted and oxygenated (forming carbon dioxide), not incompletely (forming carbon monoxide). The brightest part is NOT the hottest, and is bright because of uncombusted soot particles incandescing yellow-hot.
The blue INNER part (the part immediately surrounding the wick) isn’t very hot at all in comparison.

My 7th grade science teacher said that there are no such things as vestigial organs, evolution is a myth, and computers can't show anything.
Jonstern1983 1 year ago
That's nothing. I had a science teacher who once said gravity was caused by Earth's magnetism and we are attracted to it because of the iron in our blood. That same teacher also said that bats are a single species of featherless bird.

It's funny (⸮) that those Tx BoE chumps think it necessary to add 'critical thinking' to one speciic domain of education only. Quite frankly critical thinking education should probably run as an autonomous short class alongside all others, perhaps even as part of a basic philosophy class.

Religious people need to stay in their churches and keep their imaginary friends to themselves.
All they have is arguments from ignorance.
There are actually two sane people on the Texas BOE???

jmm1233 1 year ago 2
@jmm1233 said "i surprised the kids in school don't revolt and form a union to demand not to be taught by idoit teachers".
It's probably because they learn, through experience, that "resistance is futile". Kids will learn that minors don't have rights; they are not recognized by law as Citizens, just chattel of their parents and The State. Um, well, even adults are considered chattel by The State, but that's a different thread.
Welcome to the real world, kids. Life sucks. Get used to it.
MrDorkusMaximus 1 year ago 2
@MrDorkusMaximus I think it differs according to school. I remember having a really terrible German teacher all through grammar school. The class under me actually revolted when they were supposed to have her teach them - went to the headmistress and asked for someone else to teach them German. It completely blew my mind when I heard that. Oh and they succeeded
8DX 1 year ago
@jmm1233
How? The Children in this country really do not have rights. They are under the auspices of their parents unless the parents have proven they are unfit to be parents.
A child cannot do that. Their parents, however, can.

One more critical piece of information:
He believes that the less qualification you have, the more trustworthy you are on a given subject:
"Someone has to stand up to these experts! And I am the perfect standard, cause I am only a dentist, not some guy with a PhD!"
