Dane Fife discusses Bobby Knight's firing from IU

Larry Bird was recruited by Knight at IU. Bird enrolled at IU. Bird met with the team and Knight. Knight went ballistic on Bird because his hair was a little long. Bird said fuck this and left.

@alumynabjj Knight would have ruined Bird. Bird needed some freedom to deveolop his game. Knight was a micro-manager. I graduated from IU in '87, a good year, NCAA Championship. Ricky Calloway was on that team. He was a sophomore. He averaged about 10 points a game, significant. Knight told Calloway he wanted him to work out with weights, to bulk up during the summer. Calloway did but didn't really put on much weight. Knight was pissed and sat him on the bench the next year.

@alumynabjj This almost ruined Calloway's career. Calloway transferred to Kansas and ended up playing a few years in the NBA. Knight also fucked with Smart and Garrett that 87-88 season. Knight ruined that team. They could have competed for another NCAA if Knight would not have been such an egomaniac. I really think Knight did this because he wanted to make Alford out to be some type of basketball god.

Then, Knight has the nerve to give an interview with Michael Jordan like Knight had something to do with Jordan becoming the greatest of all. This is just entire bullshit. Knight would have ruined Jordan. This is something that Bird understood so Bird did not go to IU. Yes, Knight won a lot of games. I understand he was a great coach. But, Knight was a psychopath with no nurturing values.

@alumynabjj No, because Knight like to micro-manage the players and didn't give them and freedom. Davis gave some freedom so Fife excelled and IU went to the NCAA finals with Davis.

@arlichar11 because he was tough, gritty, and played hard defense and made good decisions on offense. you can win with that formula, and he showed it. don't ever question a Bobby Knight recruit.

@STsixx i wont dispute that those are good things at all... but will dispute that dane was any of those , he was overrated still... i think theres discrepency with guys with talent and guys that can make grades to stay on team... dane was just able be right place and was student.. other wise..he was a bum.!!
