A #1 hit for Tammy Wynette and "The Possum" on the Country & Western charts. It was the 277th #1 C&W song of the Rock Era. It also hit #2 on the Canadian C&W charts.
Too bad they couldn't hold on enough to save the marriage, as George would soon relapse. He is lookin healthy here as he would later in the mid 80s after his marriage to Nancy. Wonderfully perfomed , however they didn't seem so convinced of the song they were singing
I love George and Tammy deeply...I am country....The clothes stlye here is great . If you dont think the "Possum" here looks like a muddy turtle sittin in a glass of O.J. ? Well then I dont know what to tell ya?
Not dogging King George -- I love George Jones. It does seem in this video he's more convinced of the lyrics, while she seems a bit embarrassed. Sure wish Jones could have sobered up while he was with Tammy........maybe she'd still be with us. Thank you for posting this video.
I think the year is 1974 -- not long before they divorced. In Tammy's book she talks about this period of time and this song. Jones had gained weight because he was trying not to drink, and was eating more instead of drinking. The song was written by Richie and Sherrill -- one of them overheard Jones telling Tammy they were just going to have to hold on, if they were going to make it, during one of their fights. By the time of this video Tammy was getting seriously fed up with Jones.
This is just ...TOO AWESOME!!..NO country music singers today could even COME CLOSE to performing a duet in a "live" setting as these two master vocalist could do!!

It's cool that the best male country singer married the best female country singer. Both are epic.

Tammy was so beautiful, and George, well, he was just an old Possum. But I loved them and the way the music comes out.
