in addition to that, soundtracks sound more like an orchestra today. back then they had only their sound chips, so it's very very hard to produce sound like that today. either it sounds too cheap or too techno.

@jp83avalanche Actually games nowadays have scores like this but they are more in the background creating atmosphere than in the foreground as a gametune. Some newer games got scores that easily rival, and even surpass movie music. Some real talented people out there.

There's a lot of great musicians writing scores to games but many lack the "playfullness" of the older video game music. There's too much musical thinking(motif expansions and ambiental constructs), but it's natural since there's no restraint on what can be done nowadays, and considering graphical detailing has advanced so much, so has the musical detailing. It just lacks playfullness.

@vincentizghra Maybe, but you have a few memorable tunes out there. Remember the Morrowind theme? Amazing tune. Final Fantasy 7's soundtrack, quite a few gems there. Ehm, Metal Gear Solid Maintheme and maybe that other tune they got, Snake Eater. Snake Eater sound like a Bond soundtrack, heh. Ok, that's all I could think of just from the top of my head.
