tqmidget85 put a short answer: Here a long.USAC start in the mid 50's as a replacement for the AAA since, well 1955 been a bad year in racing with the Le Mans accident (83 deaths) and the Indy accident (Bill Vukovich): So they start 2 series, sprint Midget and Sprint car (Silver crown in 1971). And USAC did ban wing in 1958 in sprint because Jim Cushman run a car and they have fear for safety thing and other. But in the 70's, driver on regional tour start use it and world of oulaws take is place
