definition of theism-Belief in the existence of a god or gods, especially belief in a personal God as creator and ruler of the world.
Disbelief in or denial of the existence of God or gods.
this is all according to the dictionary. sorry, this is simply not a matter of faith. that is a linguistic fact.
and if atheism is a religion it is a surprise to me because i do not believe in a god. you are an atheist too in regards to zeus and the flying spaghetti monster
@avalsonline Buddism doesn't have a deity. Buddha was a prophet who meditated and brought them their ideals but he wasn't a god. Its still a religion.
Atheism believes that science and reason are the one true powers of the universe.
And no disrespect to Atheism but some Atheists are as arrogant and fanatical as some of the worst bible thumping christians.
Atheism doesn't include anything else than lack of belief in a supernatural deity.
We can call atheism a religion, but if that's the case we can just as well say that any belief is a religion. For example, I believe that the computer I am typing this on exists. Thus, I am religious?
If we label all belief as religious, we'll just need a new word for believing in a supernatural deity and/or a set of morals.
Me, I like the current term, I don't really want a new one.
Lol atheism is the same thing as religion. You read the same books you think the same ways.Your questions are the same.Your heroes are the same Dawkin. You guys fight to keep your faith on whatever you believe, also you even try to convert people to atheism by making videos on it.Oh by the way just like Christians there is a reward for following you guys its not being labeled brain washed lol and we give the gift of eternal life.Choose.
Actually many atheist do not think same ways or read the same books. Some like philosophy, while others read fiction, others like science and some hate reading. You also have many atheist who don't like dawkins and call him arrogant just like theist do. I do not want to convert you and I don't want to give a reward for doing so. Stay a christain if you would like to its fine with me. All I would like is for everyone to keep learning together and respecting one another.
You are wrong. Because then i can say that hippies that where fans of Tolkien and read the lord of the rings where a religion. Their questions are the same. The heroes are the same Gandalf. Hippies fight for peace and love!
Lol hippies fight for peace and love.People with a heart fight for peace and love.People who have children and want wars to stop.People who are starving and want someone to feed them but dont know who to ask.People with hearts fight for peace and love.
we read the same books? sorry, havent picked up dawkins or harris recently. in order to have a religion, one must have a god. atheists by definition have none. eternal life? well, you take that on faith, which is almost as good as wishing it was so. for all you know you can simply be deluding yourself.
@6gording6 there is only one thought that all atheists have in common: there are no gods. that's why they are called atheists. even most buddhists are atheists because they don't have gods. how can you say they all think the same?
just start educating yourself instead of making claims without any reasoning behind them.
it is neither a lifestyle or a religion. Someone who is an atheist can be a hedonist while the another atheist is a buddhist monk. Atheism does not tell you how to style your life.
And, sadly, it is the motivated atheistic zealots to murder millions upon millions of people. If religion replacement is even suggested in the USA, prepare for the worst, because the Christians zealots will fight tooth and nail for what they believe and their freedom to keep it.
Religion is a belief system. Atheism is also a belief system. People have warped the definition of religion into believing that there's a god. Thats not what religion is. Weather you believe in god, or don't believe in god, you still BELIEVE, and as a result, you follow a religion.
You said that atheism is a belief system. I would say that it is lack of belief. Maybe it is just symantics. But if you believe that a lack of belief is a belief then I have a question for you. Is having a belief the same as having a belief system?
Just to let you know, in my video I did not warp the definition of religion into believing in a god like you claim. This thought process would discount buddhism and taoism etc
Good point. This line is pathetic. What's the 'religion' for absence of belief in fairy's CyberSword. Or dragons, or the tooth fairy or the - you get the point.
I hope not. I hope I didn't come across as preaching a sermon since I don't believe that I'm speaking truth that others must follow but instead am offering my thoughts and opinions that can be discussed. peace
Technically black and white aren't colours. White is a tint and black is a shade. If I go to buy white paint and the clerk asks "What colour" I don't say "I don't want a colour I want a tint" I'd more likely just say "white". If asked my religin on a survey I just say "atheist" as it's easier. If people want to discuss the label in more detail with me I'll will. I just find this easier.
On the comments of a Scientologist video, someone said, "Atheism is a cult" and I responded with a list of all the common features of a Cult I could think of, like;
money spent; $0.00
mass; never even met another Atheist in the flesh
Nick Gisburne said it well (i can only paraphrase of course) "Atheism exoisted before Darwin, Darwin just made it a hell of a lot easier to be an Atheist."
For reference, many Buddhists would consider themselves atheists.
"I cannot bless you. After this, go and do something good to someone. One day they will bless you by doing something good to you. There is no god or magic to give me power to bless you. The only blessings are gifts between people. This way we promote peace, and peace is a wonderful gift to bless the world." (Tenzin Gyatso, 14th Dalail Lama)
In response to the next question you're probably gonna ask: It's not the same with Christianity. What's lacking from atheism that is all too prominent in Christ is the depth of philosophy and quality of (all) relationship.
"Concern over what exists beyond the visible world, differentiated from philosophy in that it operates through faith or intuition rather than reason..." DEFINITELY atheism. Either way, it's all relative ANYWAY, right? So, what does it matter? If you're going to "practice" atheism then why are you caught up in the idea that it's not a "defined religion?" Is it a need to be individual that's making you be like the other 850 million atheists out there? Or is it a brotherhood of some sort?
Al least they believe in sciences, right? From my life experiences, they are many who doessn't believe in God but they do beleive in sciences,obviously...

Okay, sorry, dude. I just thought you defined religion like the rest of the world does: "Religion: a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs." - Webster's Dictionary By this definition (the real definition) atheism IS a religion.
Atheism is lack of a belief in all gods. You are an atheist in most gods. Do you practice the religion of a-Krishna or a-Odin or a-Zeus? Are these religions? Is NOT collecting stamps a hobby?
Religion is a set of beliefs dictated by a leader usually believed to have divine powers(human or otherwise) and usually involves indoctrination, dogma, rituals and text to guide the users lives by.
"Morals are a by product of species trying to cooperate with one another." That's your theory and you are more than welcome to believe that with all your heart. Why then are you so condescending about the fact I believe our morals and instincts are appointed upon the human race by God, Who also (I believe just as surely as you do not) created the universe, all that's in it and the laws that govern it (i.e. gravity, thermodynamics, physics, morals, etc...)?
Morals are certainly a by product of herd or pack dynamics. Morality proves the nonexistence of Jehovah. All herd, pack and hive animals display their own morality thereby disqualifying the need of a super-Human to create morals. Had Jehovah created morality: All cultures around the world would have the same laws as the ancient Hebrews instead, the only universal moralities we find are those necessary for group survival.
Humans didn't invent morals. Morals are a by product of species trying to cooperate with one another. Morality also exist within other species. Are humans naturally good? No because some people try to not cooperate and some do.
So is the ritualistic belief in oneself being god of their own universe not define religion? Is it not all relative in your eyes? What would you say we DO live our lives by? Are you merely tying to be "indiviualistic" by labeling yourself as an "atheist?" Apparantly you need to define "religion" before starting such an argument. By the way, whether you believe it or not, God's blessing your right now. God bless.
"So is the ritualisitc belief in oneself being god of their own universe" No because atheist aren't gods. To be god I'm pretty sure you have to be a creator of the universe. Since there is no creator and we aren't creators ourselves then it is not a religion. Also what do you mean ritualisitic belief in oneself? How is that even a ritual? Do you know what a ritual is?
Good point. How about answering my last question? What would you say we DO live our lives by? And you can probably predict my next question: Where does this moral code come from?
I don't tell other people how to live their lives. Morals come from the desire for humans to try to coexist with one another. Anything that hurts the chances of coexisting or cooperating is immoral.
